Actually, in a healthy way, because by and large, they strongly respect each person's rights. Unless you live in a leftie leaning city or State... Which is, Incidentally, where most crime happens.

That is not what I found during my visits to the US in past years. If you read, watch, and study the politics going on today their society is split, with one side not listening to the other.
Rather like when the poor guy (black) was ordered off the crowded hotel bus outside by JFK Airport by a bloke (white) with a gun that my family and I witnessed. Not an isolated incident, and today one side of politics want to shoot the other and visa versa. All correspondents and observers are reporting that it is a more divided country all over than ever before, Trump, your hero, helping it all along :(

Actually, I think America's divisions were caused not so much by Trump, but by an inability by his opponents to accept the outcome of the democratic election in 2016. ::)

New York City is as left leaning as Seattle or San Francisco.
Had it been a white person in a black neighbourhood in the seventies/eighties, then the situation you saw would have been reversed.
Trump isn't a hero of mine, but rather a refreshing change from the political elite. Middle America does not care for political gestures or pander to feelings. It says what it thinks and means what it says.
Rather than embracing the concept of free thought and speech, the liberalists insist on being the only mindset and voice. You can celebrate differences without being divisive. Two individuals or groups can have independent ideas. Neither is wrong, but the liberalists refuse to accept that as a fundamental concept, which serves only to fuel the rift.
If a person takes issue with something, then that's on them, because ultimately they're the one that has the issue*
If you straight-line a two lane roundabout and hit the car in the lane you cut into, that's all on you. If, instead you keep in your lane, both lanes flow freely and everyone has a good day. People, and life, are no different. Go about your journey in a way that allows for those around you to go about theirs.
*Within societal reason of course... Some things should never be tolerated, child prostitution or ethnic cleansing being two obvious examples
