Title: Mechanic reccomendation or volunteer
Post by: chrisdb on 06 September 2008, 09:57:09
Hi everyone

I've been through everything I would need to do to replace my exhaust manifold gasket (right/drivers's side) but I think it will take me a couple of days and I don't really have a suitable place where I can work on it. So... does anyone know a decent mechanic near me (midlands) who can do this for me at a reasonable price, or would anyone like to do it for me? (obviously paid!)?

Cheers
Chris

Drivers side should be a lot quicker...would get out there and douse the bolts with plusgas though and do that every day for 2 or 3 days to try and avoid the bolts snapping when you try to undo them!!

I know how to do it in theory but not in practice yet or I would do it for you and not too far away :)

Is it really that bad?  I just ignore mine.  Very loud at startup, mostly goes away when warm.  Flew through MOT no advisories.

Is 3 in 1 high performance penetrating spry any good? I have a can of that...

It is not too bad once the engine is warm but I do a lot of motorway miles and it is very annoying. I can definately feel the effect of it. I'm getting 40mpg on the motorway and I think I can get more once this is fixed. I do around 700 miles a week so it could make a big difference to my pocket :)

You're getting 40mpg?  :o

I've just been to Devon and back - averaged 29.3 on a steady run!

I did mine, It sounds pretty daunting, but it's alot easier than it sounds.

Plennum
injector rail
inlet manifold
coolant bridge
water pipe
heat shields
CAT (see MarkDTM at Newent, He has a way of dealing with them)
exhaust manifold.
then put it all back together

Yes, 40!! I used to get 30-31 on the motorway and then it would drop to around 23 when I hit town. I've done a lot of work getting things fixed and a couple of weeks ago changed the cam cover gaskets as the plugs were drowning. MarksDTM changed the fuel filter for me because I didn't have the special tool. Now I get 40 on the motorway, and it drops to 35 around town :y

I have never, ever managed to get a consistent 40mpg out of a 3.0.

I've done it in a 2.5 driving like miss Daisy - but never in a 3.0!!

I might just tackle it. ONly a few concerns though:-

. I can't see the manifold screws in order to spray them
. I might have trouble getting the car high enough to get at the CAT nuts
. I'm buggered if it rains all day!

Have you tried this... get to 75 and hold it on cruise, then reset the Ave mpg counter?

Yep - but I prefer to start the computer from the time I pull off the drive - get a more accurate trip consumption that way :y

What speed do you drive at to get 40mpg?

Best I've ever got was about 32, and I was delighted with that.

my Pug 605 3.0 V6 would do a lot more MPG at 90 than it would at 60.

Unfortunately, same doesn't apply on the Omega - slower speeds see better returns. Between 65-70 is most efficient in a V6, IMHO.

Constant 75. I do stretches of about 60 miles at a time. But I do find if I come off cruise and wander up to 80-85 it does not make too much difference - drops to maybe 37-38...

You must be going downhill with a tailwind all the time!!! I cruise at an indicated 75 (actually 72) and normally get low to mid 30's on a run!!!

75-80 seems to suit my car best, and I leave it on cruise control because otherwise it goes to fast - nothing to do with me  :) - it just wants to go faster.  I can't say if it uses less petrol at 65-70 - never really considered driving at that speed  :).

But my impression is that there's not a great deal of difference in the consumption between 50 and 90 - neither of which I do for extended periods if I can help it.

What's truly horrendous is the 17mpg I get if I just use the car for commuting 3 miles twice a day  :(.

Thats because the pug engine has a shite inlet setup and no low down torque so it needs revving to get to an efficient point in the engines operating range!

Cats bolts are easy to get at...you can jack up the car high enough using the standard Omega jack...jacks up higher than a trolley jack...2 16mm bolts holding cats in place although people put different sizes on sometimes just to be bloody awkward!! Need some extension bars long and a short one combined...16mm socket also happens to be the 10mm spark plug socket and is ideal for getting up to the nut head over the bolt sticking out...

I have no idea how you get them MPG readings... Has your car got the wrong MID screen fitted?  ;D

If I reset mine at 75, it does 34mpg. Due to schools starting, my cars mpg from home to work (about 3-4 miles) is now 15mpg on a good day  :o (have seen 12mpg before door to door :'()

Hell 40mpg (you must free wheel alot)  :) even on my bestist behaviour using a "featherlight touch " er mmm I cant get over 35mpg when watching readout on dash it says that when doing 50-60 mph but once over the 60' mark it drops considerably, are you sure some neighbour isnt adding fuel to the tank for you like an old movie I saw with Walter Mathieu ;D ;D
