Got a slight rattle from the front of the big pussy, suspect its something on the aux belt. Ordered a new belt as a matter of course, as I may as well replace it if I have to remove the old one.
So as thats now arrived, printed off the destructions for replacing the belt, and its 17 bloody pages FFS >:(

Obviously my plan is to remove the belt and go round all the accessories checking.
But it could be just the belt, as I've never changed it (obviously), and can't see any recent history of it being changed. Its routed in such a way that it wraps around all pulley quite a way, so it could be its worn out the V's on the belt. The plan is to just slap the new one on if I cant find any obvious issues with the driven components, and see if that cures it.

A while ago I bought a replacement 'fan belt' for SWMBO's 1.6 petrol Citroen C3 .... how hard can it be?
The water pump drive is part time & a motor moves the drive to & from it (apparently it's a BMW Mini engine :-\) ..... perhaps I shouldn't have been so persuasive ::) ::) I ended up towing it to the dealers with the instructions to 'just fix it' ..... about £350 later! :-X

I watched a youtube vid a while back of a fella changing the alternator on a 4.4TDV8 Range Rover. What a ball ache! ::) :-\

Seems "only" the intake ducts and the turbo diverter valve thingie need to come off to be able to get a glimpse. Obviously that involves removing the airbox and the undertrays.

Is that the main tensioner on the arm? Is it obvious when the spring has failed, or is it guesswork about how much pressure its applying?
My gut feeling is it sounds like the belt is a bit loose, but no slipping type noises.

Is that the main tensioner on the arm? Is it obvious when the spring has failed, or is it guesswork about how much pressure its applying?
My gut feeling is it sounds like the belt is a bit loose, but no slipping type noises.
Yes the main tensioner,the arm wears and puts the pulley at an angle which will throw the belt if excessive

Mine seems good :y. Unlike my body, after that saga of changing the poxy aux belt. None of the jubilee's were easily accessible, the elbows from teh turbo divert valve were an arse, and even with everything off they said had to come off, access was a bitch. I spent 5hrs solid yesterday evening, and another hour this morning.

That would almost make the ten hours for a 1.0l Ecoboom timing belt look like good value. Almost :-\

There's a slight 'squeak', but it's definitely there. Sounds, to me, like a static pulley in need of lubrication.

I don't know if that's an illusion from dirt on it, but it's a valid starting point...

That's an illusion caused by my fingers wiping half the dust of that pulley.

Well, drive it as normal and, if something seizes, you'll have identified the culprit.

Well a good few modern engines, N47 and N57 included have the timing chain on the rear which means a gearbox off job to do it. If you like the car and bought the car with your eyes open to the likely long term costs running it for say 5 years / 150K miles (in my case) then I can't see the problem.

Even the chain replacement on a 1.6 astra diesel is engine out.

About 5yrs/50k ago. I think its interval is 7yrs/110k from memory.

If you got too and changed the serpentine belt the T belt is piss easy from there,fuel pump belt at the back is more tricky tbh

Trouble is, my back hasn't recovered yet, so will likely get a garage to do it when it needs doing. Esp as I would have to buy the locking kit bits. On the plus side, all those hoses that had stuck themselves to the metal tubes should come off easier next time, and all the jubilees are accessible now.
Had another listen today, I think I'm trying to find a noise that no longer exists. Need to find another owner and listen to theirs now I reckon.
