Fred believed in health and safety. He never climbed a 300 ft chimney without his cloth cap. :)

it's one thing climbing up ladders over the overhang, but he was the bugger that fitted them.
This one gets me ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6W_7uIapoHc .... how to erect a staging around the top of a chimney! Swinging round on a bosun's chair .... no safety line. ::)

I'm not risk averse and I am happy to put a long ladder against the house and climb on the roof. Fred however, and men like him must have had the 'fear cortex' of his brain removed at birth......or he feels the fear but refuses to give in to it. :y
-
The only thing I ever feared were ladders not heights just ladders, I was determined to overcome this so in 1994 I volunteered to become a retained Firefighter the training cured me now quite happy to shimmy straight up one no problems.

Feel the fear do it anyway.... :y

fred gets my utmost respect. a true one off engineer and one we will never ever see again.he had total trust in his laddering and working skills and im sure he once said something along the lines of
"if you fall off you only do it once " he never did thou !

As me and an old co-worker, back in the day when I did real work, once said when we were once again strapping 2 ladders together, it doesn't matter if you fall 20' or 60', its gonna hurt.

Informative video, Mr Beanz. :y
Setting up the ladders and climbing for the overhang is where balls need to be at their biggest. ::)

Always loved his programmes, very informative with a sense of humour and he didn't talk down to his "audience" as some presenters tend to do.Also have a copy of his biography on my bookshelves simply titled FRED.

Fred was no spring chicken back then. So all credit to the old lad. :y
