I have had a issue with a rattle from the front of my MV6 when driving on rough roads. It would stop when I touched the brakes. I changed the caliper slide pins that have stopped the rattle. But if I hit a pot hole/drain cover I get a clunk from the front. Should there be a gap below the front strut mount top hat in the engine bay? it is about 5mm. It had Bilstein struts & eibach springs fitted.

A clunk suggests broken, worn or loose. Further investigation is required :)

Check droplinks first. Clunking from the front suspension is more often than not, droplinks.

Everything was replaced about a 2 years ago. Have checked on a 4 post lift and nothing is broken. Have checked all bolts and re torqued all of them. Drop links look ok. Is it normal to have the gap under the front strut top hat?

Yes when new.
If you jack one side, that topmount should drop slightly.

Goes for MOT next week so will get them to check it over. But has only done 2500 miles in last 2 years, and not driven in winter. So will have a another look but sounds like the struts are correct.

4 post lift is no good ,you need to take the weight of the car shell and let all the wheels hang free to check suspension ;)
2 post lift or axle stands etc

So much so, it's worth buying a pair before you jack the car up. £15 to save having to dothat a couple of times while you diagnose and source the parts is worth it.
If that doesn't fix it, you'll need to dismantle the front suspension. And on an Omega, that means replacing everything in one go: struts - worn internal bushes could be the noise, topmounts - the likely candidate, but you need a new one for comparison, strut bearings - they tend to creak for a while before crumbling away, bump stop - I guarantee they have crumbled away :-X , track rods and wishbones. I wouldn't put the old springs back even if they aren't broken, which is another potential cause of your noise. That's £200 per side in parts. Then it will need an alignment by someone who knows what they're doing, which is another £100. The good news is that it will drive like a new car.

if you want to buy 8 drop links you could spend £15.17 Nick
they are 99p each plus £3.75 for the first P&P plus 50p per additional item ;)
not even I brought more than 2 pairs though ;D
