Title: Tracking build and delivery of new car.
Post by: Field Marshal Dr. Opti on 21 July 2022, 13:13:07
It's 2 months (19th May) since I paid a £1000 deposit to secure my new car. I actually wanted a used model but the price for these is currently anywhere between £3000-£12000 more than a new one. It's crazy at the moment. :-X

Anyway, I contacted the dealer to ask how the build was progressing but the only information was " We think some time around December, can't tell you any more at the moment I'm afraid." :-\

It's 2022, surely there is a way to track  the build date and delivery.

The car is being assembled in Mexico so I can only assume the workers are fast asleep under a sombrero for 23 hours each day. >:D

Roughly translated, the dealer CBA to check with manufacturer ;D

Though with the shortages, production date estimates are as accurate as a Jag trip computer,...

By the time they remember what colour you ordered, the used ones will be affordable  :D

Yes. My thoughts.

Apparently the wide-boy salesman I did the paperwork with is on holiday. I'm guessing the sales manager couldn't be arsed to check thoroughly.

TB....perhaps you could start your cull with a few car dealers. The world won't miss them. :)

I have provisionally ordered 'Thundernight' ( because Mrs Opti likes it) but I'm not sure if it is a bit too much of a 'in yer face' colour. ;D

Looks like I'll have plenty of time to reconsider.

It was probably actually built a couple of years ago and is sat in the middle of a field waiting for a box of semi conductors to turn up.  ;D

Sounds like the 1970's when your brand new Marina/All-aggro/Mini would arrive with rusty wings and doors. Ah.....the good old days. :D

When I ordered my Beemer, I got a provisional build week, which moved around a bit (week or two either way) until about 4m before the estimated day. Thereafter it got a status code that showed where it was in the build/transport process so it could be tracked all the way to the supplying dealer.

Sounds like whoever you got CBA to look it up for you.

Just had a Google. You're right it is very similar.

Colour choice is not great.

2 shades of white.....so wedding car and Taxi white, which don't float my boat. :-\

Brooklyn grey.........think of the grey primer wing on your MK1 Escort when you were a callow youth. :-\

Black......which looks like black.

Melbourne red.....Hmmm

Portimao Blue...probably the best overall choice.

Thundernight....I like, but brings back memories of magic mushrooms.

Yes....I have seen reference to this on the forums. I think I will know more when the sales johnny returns from his jollies.

I had to provisionally  pick a colour for the order to go through. I do like this colour but maybe only in small doses. ::)

If this colour is not picked I essentially have the choice between blue, red, black, or grey. That's it. :-X

......oh and white, but white isn't really a colour at all.

Your problem is this:

The car manufacturer would like to build and ship the car immediately.
The issue is that to build the car you need ALL the parts.
Some parts will have been ordered, literally years ago, like more than 12 months ago but still haven't arrived.
Some won't turn up and will need to be ordered again.
Some will turn up late.
The world has gone to cr*p and it seems nothing can be relied on.
Electronic parts (of almost every type) are the worst.
But it could be trim clips or wipers...

All this means the manufacturer with something like 5,000 to 20,000 parts in a modern car has no idea when they can actually build it. Well not until all the parts have actually been delivered.

Years ago a lad that worked for Ford told me he was given a large bag of steering wheel nuts and had to go round the storage area and fit them to loads of Transits as they had run out on the line.

Just got off the phone to BMW. They tell me they can't give me a build week because they have no build slots available for 2022.

When I do get a build slot it will be for 2023 but they can't tell me which quarter. As for getting a status code that is miles down the road.

£1000 deposit paid on 19th May. Somebody needs to pull their finger out.

I mean, how does a business make money if it can't supply goods to it's customers? :-X

I've decided that Thundernight is too effeminate.....too much of a nancy boy colour. ;D

Today I  have changed my order to Portimao blue......although it looks as though there is still plenty of time to change it again, should I wish to.

To be honest the choice of colours is pretty limited. :-\

I like Isle of Man Green but it is not available on a humble 2 series. :-\

Don't forget the price will have increased by the time it's built, and that will be passed onto you.

I have mentioned this twice now, to two different salesmen. They INSIST it won't happen. But then I read a letter in Autocar magazine about a man buying a new Range Rover and they added £4000 to the price as delivery grew closer.

If it turns out they are dishonest little turds, and they do go down this route, I will get my deposit back. :-X

BMW are common as shit. They cost no more than the equivalent Ford, Vauxhall, or Daewoo ::). They are no better either, but I do like the B58 lump in these cars.
