Title: HM Queen Elizabeth ll health
Post by: Lizzie Zoom on 08 September 2022, 13:07:01
News is that the doctors are attending the Queen at Balmoral, with great concern being express :o :o

The Queen’s family have been fully informed, with Prince Charles and Camilla travelling to see her.

This is a worry at these troubling times.  Bad news to come possibly?

Let us hope not ;)

Hopefully the queen will be well enough to tell her to bugger orf.  :)

It has just been announced that Megan is not going to travel with her husband to Balmoral, but may  join him later!

What do we make of that?  What a snub?  Or just Megan being Megan?  Not good PR at the very least! ::) ::)

I think in any family where someone's partner is despised by the rest of the family it is wise/prudent for that person to keep their distance at times like this.  ;)

Indeed a very sad day.

We knew it would come, and I had told myself I would not cry when the inevitable news came.  But I cried like a baby.  Far more than I cried when my parents died.

Very strange.  But the Queen was all I had known. I was born in the year of the Coronation.  I now feel an odd loss :o :o

Anyway, RIP Queen Elizabeth II, a real credit to the British nation. :'(

Oh yes, indeed, in modern terms he was a bit of a playboy.  He certainly had his loves😀

The ones of note from many, was Jennie Churchill, the American mum of Winston, and amazingly Alice Keppel, the great, great grandmother of now Queen Consort Camilla, the wife of now King Charles III,  great, great grandson of King Edward VII.  How things can go in circle! ;D ;)

To give Wills a good run at the job. He won't though. It's his prerogative of course.  :)

He'll need to keep his opinions to himself from now on though.....especially political opinions.

Absolutely, the major benefit to the UK of a Monarch is having a politically neutral person who can travel and cement international relationships.

I have been fortunate to work on two significant contracts in my career, the award of which had the rails nicely greased by the Queen visiting said nations shortly before. No political agenda is key to this.  :y

That is why the monarchy are such a good investment, great for our country, earn a fantastic amount in tourist revenue, can lead in generating charitable donations, and stop us becoming like the USA with a presidential system ;)

Just been listening to Charlie talking about his deep rooted C of E faith, and the freedoms and responsibilities that go with that faith.
He must have forgotten about the responsibility of not committing adultery being one of the foundation responsibilities of that faith.

I understand what you say, which is how a lot of people will think.

But, as a Christian we understand the teachings of Jesus Christ, including his statement we are all sinners (unless you are a bloody saint!) , we should forgive others for their sins, not judge least we be judged, and foremost be tolerant of others.

The monarchy has always been known for its wayward members, but they have been no different than most of the human race at least in the U.K.  Men, and women, do stray from their so called loved one, as I found out with my husband, for all kinds of reasons.  Not excusing Charles, but I believe he had to also suffer from a women not suited to royal life, and one who needed to be the centre of attention, pampered, all too often.  She was a difficult, troubled soul, and may she be resting in peace now.  She though was a victim of the strict system she married into, and became “lost and lonely” within it.

Life is never perfect.  I just pray that King Charles III can do us all the honour of giving us the neutral, soft, power to help the politicians improve our lot!

God save the King!

No, and no. We have been here before. Pre meditated adultery by someone we are supposed to look up to. What next a robber pope? Regardless of faith  ( what a load of cobblers) people should get some moral fibre especially those in privileged positions. He lost my respect and is unlikely to re earn it ever..

Well said Varche. His statement today was hypocrisy of the highest order.
He never had the slightest intention of being a faithful husband. He was shagging Camila the whole way through his relationship with Diana and almost drove the poor girl mad because of it. Then had has side of "the firm" brief the media that she was nuts and unfit to be a mother.
And forgiveness can only come after repentance.  ;)

I completely understand what you and Varche are saying.

But, as in said before the Christian approach should be taken with our new head of the Church of England.

Do not judge least you be judged, may those without sin cast the first stone.  The fact is we are all sinners, and those to claim not to be I would suggest are the hypocrites, the liars.  What Prince did was wrong, no doubt about that, and he knows it.

So let him be judged by the highest authority after death, with us mortals watching how he performs as the new King and judging him on that alone.  That is what matters to us now, not his history.  So many of his male forebears could have also been judged for their “indiscretions” - sins- but they often became great leaders, with direct action in the days of being absolute monarchs and influencers in todays age.  Let him be judged by us mortals on what he does as King.

That is what I believe anyway, and frankly there are far, far bigger worries at the moment than a King who liked a bit of hanky panky, like a lot of men, and yes women as well! ;D

As a 9 year old child I remember laying in my bed awake one night listening on an AM transistor radio to the funeral of Sir Winston Churchill. It all seemed so hard to believe at that age that the man I had read so much about was gone. As an avid reader I consumed books, especially history and WWII. Because of that, Sir Winston was one of my heroes even over here in the states.

To now have witnessed the passing of HM Queen Elizabeth II who was Queen all the way back then is actually quite remarkable.

I firmly believe the world was a better place because of both of them.

My sympathies on your loss.

The fawning and posturing is getting somewhat tedious, and Camilla looked remarkably smug waving at the crowds.

I know it's the end of an era, and that HRHs reign was an exceptional and exemplary one for the most part, but I do wonder if now might be the time to remember the past for what it was and move on.  :-\

Winter is on it's way. I'll be quite happy not getting up and going out into the elements. Had enough of that over the last 11 years. I'm not short of something to do, I decorated the living room last week. Took sonny boy and his squeeze to Manchester airport Saturday, helped some friends move furniture Sunday.
But.....men in black has gone on too long. The queen is dead. Being dead for two days is ok, but 10 days is too long. Surely the powers that be must realise that the majority of people just want to get on with their day.

I'm pretty sure the old lad is already sitting in God's waiting room, so we probably won't have to wait long to find out. :)

Perhaps he could have 3 funerals like George Floyd. The BBC really filled their boots with the coverage of that demise. ::)

I cant stand the clapping, cheering, whooping etc.
Do these people really not understand the concept of quiet, reverential, respectful mourning.
It was like they were greeting the arrival of their favourite pop star or footballer.  :(
On top of that, most people filming it on their phones rather than being part of the moment. Makes me wonder just how much respect they really had for the Queen.  :-\

I understand what you saying.  The people today do not conform to the traditional ways of the past, of standing, heads bowed, as the coffin goes by.

But, this is 2022.  The way you have seen the crowds behaving is how the people of today do show their emotions.  Those emotions are no longer kept at bay, inside their heads, and never shown.  That was unhealthy, and led to complications in themselves.

It is wonderful how, especially the young who you could think would not care a damn about all this, are releasing their feelings of support for the late Queen, and at other times for King Charles III.
That is far more acceptable than no one showing any interest, and not lining the streets.

The late Queen even was involved in the designing of the Jaguar hearse (what a beautiful car!) so that when she, and her descendants are taken in funeral Ceremonies the great openness, and good lighting, encourage people to see what they want to see.

No, all in all, I feel it is all good.  Those who want to are paying their respects in the modern way, but adhering to the centuries old basic traditions of historic ceremonies that this great country of ours is famous for. :)

Now this would be the way to get them about…..

Dougal, Brian, Ermintrude and Dylan all reside in a place called The Magic Garden (Beautywood in the US version). The exact distance from where the roundabout and The Magic Garden are in relation to each other was never specifically stated, but given that Zebedee and Florence would always travel there by magical teleportation, it was either considerably far away or it was simply faster to get there by those means.

Personally, I think the queue should have been unlimited and closed only when they knew the last person would just make it. We have had 96 years to plan.

Did anyone see Prince Eduard NOT shaking hands despite his wife did? OCD problem?

I think Charles 3 showed his true self with the biro and date clip.

I thought the family vigils were both moving and hugely appropriate. Very well done

Retired Police Officers from our local Constabulary were only required to return their appointments - baton, handcuffs, warrant card, pocket books, stab proof vests and radio equipment. All other aspects of their uniform was not required to be returned to Clothing Stores, and could be retained or disposed of as the Officer wished. Not ideal, some may argue, but that was the decision made higher up....

Not everyone joined the long queue for the right reasons !
There are quite  few of them on there and prices look sky high. I would imagine people are bidding them up and will then refuse to pay because its disgraceful to sell them before the corpse is even cold.

Yes, it was quite something!  Agreat send off that really reflected our love for Her Majesty, and the wonderful traditions of this nation.  It was a superb historical moment that will be written about by historians for years to come.

I thought the BBC broadcast was of the highest standard, and for once they stopped the babbling commentary for the Westminster Hall session.  What a relief, and it really added to the enjoyment and sadness of the proceedings. I was holding back the tears for most of the time, but when that coffin descended into the vault of St. Georges Chapel................ :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

It all certainly got the World's attention in a very impressive way. :y

What a send off she got !
Ive never seen anything quite like it. Hadnt planned on spending most of the day watching it, but couldnt tear myself away until it was finished.
I dont think anyone can do that kind of thing quite like us Brits.
.

Wifey & I watched it we both thought it was stunning & wasn't it great to see so many young men & women.in uniform obviously very early into their service being tasked with this very important event .

Yes I don’t think it is possible to have a better send off. Proves we can still do some things right. ( better than any nation) IMO.

Some of the answers on tinterwebs are laughable, but officially it allows the carriage to be turned without slipping/skidding.

Not dissimilar to sanding train tracks in the winter months ;)

I don't really see how it helped it turn as the carriage pivoted in the middle - the coffin was carried on just 1 part of it .... it couldn't NOT turn. But if that's what they said  ::)

Being pivoted won't stop the wheels on the outside of the turn from wanting slip sideways. 2.5 tonnes will have a reasonable amount of momentum to control when changing direction ;)

And don't forget both axles are fixed rather than steered so the line the wheels take through a turn are different to those with steerable hubs.

I understood from the BBC commentator that the sand stopped the horses skidding on the road surface ;)

The axle might be fixed but each wheel seemed to spin freely on eaxh axle to me ....

That sounds more like it .... I know from when I had studs in my drill boots (they make a nice noise) they were pretty slippery on some surfaces

I watched the procession to Westminster Abbey and from there to Buckingham Palace. I skipped the bits about god in the middle. The sound of the boots on the ground, the pipes, Big Ben tolling at lengthy intervals, accompanied by the guns at Hyde Park, gave me the goosebumps.
It was totally absorbing. I never uttered a word, I was just lost in the occasion. For a short time, I actually felt pride in my country. We'll never see the like of that again.

A short piece about the carriage, and whilst it doesn't answer the question re the sand, it is something that was clearly used during Churchills funeral...

Big Ben is struck by the clock mechanism, and can't be rung.

You were listening to the half-muffled tenor of Westminster Abbey.

Similar here. I had to work as it became a bank holiday. I planned on watching some of it, but sat there for the whole six hours feeling pretty proud of what this country is still capable of when it matters.
And your right, we will never see the like of it again. Here, or anywhere else.

I kind of thought that, Nick, but the bbc commentator definitely mentioned Big Ben. Whichever bell it was, it was impressive.

Westminster Abbey's tenor is 30cwt, which is about average for a heavy ten; both Rochester Cathedral and All Saints Maidstone(I've rung them both) are slightly bigger.

On the subject of the bells that rung for the late Queen, I was impressed by the sound of the Sebastopol Bell in St Georges Chapel.  It represented a terribly bloody seige between the Russians and British armies that lasted a year in the Crimea War that started in 1854.  The war that included the infamous Charge of the Light Brigade.

It is a one ton beast, weighing nearly a ton, one of two taken from a church in Crimea in 1856 .  It is only rung on the occasion of the funeral of a member of the Royal Family.  It rang 96 times on Monday, obviously once for every year of her life.

An addition bit of historical information is that the Bell inspired the line in the poem by John Donne, which is "For whom the bell tolls / It tolls for thee"  This in turn inspired the title of the famous novel by Ernest Hemingway.  For the British royal family though, it is quite literal as it does only ring for a Royal who has died.

The Bell certainly rang with a very mournful note, that reaches deep inside the mind.  Big Bens bells may be impressive, and in regular use, but that bell is something else and I was delighted from a learning point of view to have heard it. ;)
