My works laptop has an intermittent problem. HP, so enough said really. That aside, it has a faulty system board, causing it to make poor connection with docking station.
So, because of the company I work for, they don't replace but repair, whereas the company I work for get replacement (yes, who I work for isn't straightforward!)
So an 'Engineer' comes out to replace system board, so he takes laptop away. About an hour later, I get a call from 'Engineer' saying he has ordered a replacement laptop, as he has destroyed mine because it has odd screws and he didn't have the right tools!
He brings it back so I can retrieve my data, the 'odd screws' are normal torx, looks like he has butchered them with a screwdriver.
So, got to spend the next 2 days rebuilding new laptop when it turns up tomorrow >:(

similiar situation here..fathers laptop ethernet port (toshiba) suddenly
stopped working..1 week ago.. So I visited two services..The "
enginners" said that main board must be replaced for a similiar cost
of a new lappy..or buy a PCMCIA ethernet..WHat :o.. I come home
butchered the lappy .. ;D and it started working ;D

I couldnt trust myself too much for lappies as they make tricky and weak connections between components and hands a little big :-[

Its fairly straight forward, turn it over, and just start removing all the screws you see.
Just take your time and be logical as you look at it.

TB you got a gimp, they're not all like that, unfortunately you get useless morons in everything.

The term "Engineer" is so over used in the UK, I am afraid I would not describe people who "repair" computers as Engineers.
Just my useless opinion.

for pcs and servers done many times but lappy boards never tried that..Will try on a scrappy .. :y

People who repair things are not.....not washing machine repair men, not plumbers (boiler and heating technicians)....none of them.
The engineers were the people who engineered the product for mass production in the first place.

The engineers were the people who engineered the product for mass production in the first place.
Does that make me a part time software engineer?

Generally to ways to strip - via keyboard, or via underneath. Dells are some of the easiest imho...

I once had a Gateway2000 (remember them?) "engineer" come out to my desktop at work. Machine was intermittently failing POSTs. He removed the top cover from the case and when it passed the POST tried to tell me that it must have a defective top cover because it worked without it. Then he tried to tell me the cover had been incorrectly installed.
All this when clearly in an environment where real "engineers" were going about their business. Needless to say there were a few colleagues whose chuckles could be heard across the room. ;D
