do you need to take cambelt off a 3.2 elite to change the waterpump?

No, but it is good practice as they don't take too kindly to being soaked in coolant  ;)

To put that another way, the work involved to get to it is the same, so for the sake of a cambelt kit, it would be rude not to do it at the same time.

If the timing belt change is within a couple of thousand miles/six months I would include it in the job.

Otherwise, I'd just fit a waterpump.

As for anti-freeze affecting the belt, there's likely to be far worse crap already lurking around the crank pulley. And it's hardly difficult to stuff a couple of rags under the pump if you're worried about it.
