...tomorrow. 11:00 GMT.
According to some anyway. ::) ;D
In honour of the Doomsayers, here is a clip from the BBC drama/documentary End Day.

As stated previously, I buy the fact that much higher Cosmic Ray energies impact our atmosphere regularly and we are still here. ..but then again, there's not much mass up there. Unlike at CERN...
Anyway, I don't think we will know much about it if it does go t*ts up :y

I'll probably be too busy, and realize an hour later that it has passed without drama.
That rap video is hilarious! :y
-
they've turned it on last week and the entire universe winked out of existence - luckily i was sent back in time a moment before disaster struck to warn them not to do it!!
so - if my calculations are correct...this should be saturday 6th september 2008 - bags of time before it happens - i'll swan around for a couple of days - then phone them on wednesday :y
-
I`ll be asleep anyways... ;D
-
Large Hadron at exactly 11am :-/ Better sit down :D
I thought they were all tiny ;)
-
I`ll be asleep anyways... ;D
Hopefully I will be too... Although today I got to bed just after 7 and was awake by 10 :o :o :o
Still... Only another 7 hours to in tonight!

IIRC this was a opener for Dan Brown in a book called Angels and Demons, where they used the collider to make anti matter that they were to use to blow up Vatican City.
Of course that may have already happened and it all starts tomorrow....again :-/
-
Got a couple of bills to pay, I think I will wait, might save some money....... ;D ;D ;D
-
Steven Hawkins says it will be OK :y

Good book!

I thought it was being switched on at 8:30 this morning, according to the BBC news anyway. :-?
-
well.... it's a bit of a media cock up.
this morning was merely a test of accelerator mechanics... checking to make sure that it can function all the way round the 27 km loop
then they have to check the opposite direction....
THEN they can start ramping up the speeds , and begin collision experiments.
it's not until they do that , that there is the slightest possibility of even remote chance risks.
quite clever PR really.... make everyone think it's safe and all the fuss was for nothing, then try and recreate big bang conditions while no one else is watching....
statistically it IS safe.
but we all know that there remains a small (i mean REALLY small) chance that the outcome will not be as predicted... and THAT means anything might happen.... after all, what are the odds on us having this discussion , on a cosmic scale??
i'm NOT worried about black holes.... singularities of the size possible here evaporate very quickly.... like some of the transuranic elements, we've created... they half half lives measured in nanoseconds....
however , The Strangelet scares the crap out of me.

looks like they have spent a lot of dosh on this so hope they find something out ::)

The news today- Some families are so scared that they dont send their children to school ;D

Some people are a bit weird. My other half said that she felt funny about going to work, in case the world ended she wanted to be with me and our son.
Might have try that excuse for myself tomorrow though "Not coming in the office, I'm too scared the world is going to come to an abrupt end brought about by those crazy guys at CERN"
-
I'm guessing as I'm still alive after my sleep that the world hasn't ended???? ;) ;) ;)
-
i didnt feel a thing either, geez :o

Nicked from the BBC:
"Scientists have hailed a successful switch-on for an enormous experiment which will recreate the conditions a few moments after the Big Bang.
They have now fired two beams of particles called protons around the 27km-long tunnel which houses the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
The £5bn machine on the Swiss-French border is designed to smash particles together with cataclysmic force.
Scientists hope it will shed light on fundamental questions in physics.
The first - clockwise - beam completed its first circuit of the underground tunnel at just before 0930 BST. The second - anti-clockwise - beam successfully circled the ring after 1400 BST.
Cern has not yet announced when it plans to carry out the first collisions, but these are expected to happen before the machine shuts down for winter."
Basically, it was all a big test and nothing was going to happen today. Now it makes me wonder why the BBC breakfast presenters were harping on about the possible end of the world, muppets.

Liked that book of his better than the "Da Vinci code" !!!!

Do you think CERN have ever calculated their "personal carbon footprint?" ;D

well the thing is there not going to start crashing the particals into each other for a while yet so just wait dont stand easy just yet lol. just really gets to me why do we have to pay alot more for electric and these guys are using enough to run american for about ten years

If these guys are right in their theories, there are 2 very possible favourable outcomes, and probably many more ...
Energy from Fusion - far cheaper and less hazardous than from fision (nuclear power)
The ability to "clean up" waste radioactive materials. There is an awful lot of waste nuclear rubbish that no-one knows what to do with, they have already had some success with treating this using high-energy particles, it is hoped that these experiments will follow on from there.
CERN is not just research for its own sake ... :)

Very true. It is indeed an investment in CO2... and if they hadn't invented html none of us would be here.

Yes, I would like to know what the universe was like one billionth of a second after it began.
However, I'm inclined to think that the prevailing climate at that time wasn't quite as temperate as that we experience in the UK. In fact, I would imagine that it was bloody hot. If someone's going to start that inferno up again, I'm not convinced I want to be living just 1000Km away from it. Several million light years would be my choice... :(

Sorry to let you know that the world has just ended.
Well, for my 10 year old daughter anyway.
I just had to tell her that there wasn't really a Father Christmas.
My world will end in about 45 minutes when my wife comes home from bingo and finds out what I've done.
We're all doomed!!!! :'( :'( :'(

Don't tell me due to a "downsizing" at the North Pole they've had to let him go. That's it in management speak ain't it Budgie?

Why did you do that? ::) ::) we are wondering how long we can keep it going, she is 8. Only problem is she thinks Santa can bring 'anythink' she asks for and it is looking expensive ::) ::) at a time when we are trying to keep an eye on the pennies :(

When we eventually thought it time to tell our kids the awful truth, they let us know that they had known all about it for some time, but didn't want to spoil our fun.
Just like when I was a (young) kid.
