Title: Steering wheel removal
Post by: cwill144 on 27 December 2022, 13:55:55
I’ve been trying to remove my steering wheel, everything is removed (air bag, nut) but it won’t come off the spline. Have soaked in WD40 any advice on how to get it off would be great!!! Was removed about 3 years ago.

They're held on via a tapered spline so I doubt soaking it in anything will help. If hitting it towards you with your palms isn't helping then you need a proper puller.

You need this

https://www.lasertools.co.uk/Product/2370/Steering-Wheel-Puller-for-GM

Kent Moore tools made a stronger one which was used in dealerships, but this is the next best thing. Without this tool, if the steering wheel does not want to come off, it ain’t gonna come off.

Put the nut back on halfway before you pull the wheel off.

That's more for if you're going to use your palms ....  ;) ;)

in most cases if you put the nut on a few turns and grip whilst twisting the wheel ,rocking it etc they usually release.
under no circumstances use any hock force such as hammering the shaft you will damage he internals of either the tilting mechanism, bearing or shaft.

Put nut on a few turns, to stop the wheel smashing yer face in ;D

Then with your knees at bottom and right hand at top, pull the wheel towards you, simultaneously tap the shaft gently with a soft mallet.

Does smacking yourself in the shaft with a hammer make your knees spasm ,pulling the wheel off ?  ;D

It's for masking the pain of smashing yourself in the face with the wheel. Because you forgot to leave the nut in place.
