I don't drive as much as I used to, but still a reasonable amount.
This week on the M4 to the wildlands of Berkshire, I saw signs " Red X Enabled"
Yes of course I know about hard shoulders being used as an extra lane and an X indicating that it should not be used. But what the F does that wording mean ? How is some thicko like me supposed to understand that. Does it mean don't use it or what?
I thought "Red X" was a fuel additive
-
I suspect that it's to reinforce the point as alot of people completely ignore the lane closed signs.
Obviously if they get caught up in ensuing mess caused by someone else ignoring it they will always be the first to complain.
-
Are you sure it didn’t say Red X ‘Enforced’, which means that anyone caught travelling in a closed lane will be fined. It’s basically letting you know that there are cameras on that gantry to spot people using the closed lane and they ‘will’ enforce the fine for doing so.

.
I think you're correct about that as there was a mention about that being more strictly enforced to boost the coffers of the
" Motorist haters association".

I've seen'Red X Enabled' a couple of times.

It seems that they use both terms then, ‘Enabled’ letting you know that the closed lane camera is active. (I would normally insert a ‘questioning smiley/emoji here but I can’t tell which of the horrible little bastids mean what with the Christmas emoji’s)

:-\ This one will do.
I'll counter it with :P

This is the type I’ve seen, but as I drive a German I’m automatically allowed in any lane apparently, so it doesn’t apply to me. ;D

Nice, I see what you did there. :y ;D ;D It’s in my signature that I have indicators on all of mine, and I use them religiously to try to restore the good faith. :y ;D

Despite the fact we've had overhead gantries with Red X for lane closures for decades*, and smart motorways for 15+ years, it seems that the British public are far too thick to understand what the Red X means. Hence they feel they need to highlight that these thick drivers might come across a Red X, so they'd better know what it means.
FFS, it was in the Highway Code book I bought when I started to drive about 30 million years ago.
-
it surprised me at work the number of lads I work with didn't know the difference between flashing amber & flashing red lights above motorway lanes.
One is advisory & the other is obligatory!

While you've only got lights and cameras to enforce traffic rules, instead of real traffic police, then people will not see the need to obey them.
A fine through the post is no deterrent.

Hate paying fines for motoring offences had two speed awareness courses in the last 15 years for doing around 40 in a 30 (rural roads)
so now make absolutely sure I concentrate 100 percent, they cream enough of my cash as it is.

I got a fine a good few years back for doing 88 on the way to Guy's house (yes ... it was that long ago) for his famous curry. And in more recent times awareness courses for 37 in a 30 and being over the limit on a road that seems to change its limit every other few hundred yards. 45 in a 50 perhaps ???

I had 2 speeding tickets come through the letterbox on the same day a few years ago! :o >:( ;D
Got away with the course for one, but had to pay the £60 and take the 3 points for the other. ::)
In my defence, I'd been living abroad for a while and didn't know that they'd converted the traffic light cameras to speed cameras as well, and two days on the trot I'd sped through the lights before it went red. Sneaky bastards! >:( ::)

Very possibly
I still find the wording very strange. Imagine being a foreigner (or Welsh) and seeing that, and trying to make sense of it. Surely just a green tick or a red X above the relevant lane would get the message across ?

Wont work for the majority of the woke generation
Driving is an inconveiance for them, they need to have their noses in their phones all the time to see if someone or thing has offended them. They are not looking at what is going on around them to notice something as silly as a red X to tell them to move lanes. They have to be somewhere, doesnt everybody else know that? They are important, you should know that
