Title: 2.6 metallic "clink" sound on start up
Post by: grifter on 08 January 2023, 15:07:37
Hi

So car's been lying up over Winter with the occassionally start up and drive about to keep things from seizing up. I noticed today when I started it there was a sound that lasted for a minute or two then went away, what can only be described as a clinking metallic sound from around about the drive belt area. It was hard to pinpoint exactly the area it was coming from as by the time I noticed the sound and started investigating, it disappeared.

Hopefully this google video works on here if not let me know and will upload it to another sharing site.

nothing been done on car recently, last thing done was belt in 2021, and everything seems ok last time I was in there.

hard to be 100% sure but i can hear it. obvious checks as to wether water pump pulley and others are not loose . could try it with aux belt off if its a regular sound every time ?
sounds like i once had when an exhaust clamp was fractured but there arnt any that near that would be so obvious ?

Check the waterpump pulley bolts and that there's nothing touching the pulley itself.

Will have a better look at the weekend and report back any findings, thanks

Checked all the bolts for the water pump, steering pump and only thing I could find was a bit of play in the aux belt tensioner, considering it's still got tension on it, imagine it might have a bit more play in it when tension is off.

Need to remove it and check. Funnily enough I just ordered a new spare one last year, I also greased up the existing one the last time I did the belt. Still, a strange noise to get from a worn tensioner, would have thought it would be a more dry constant dull sound, if indeed that is the issue.

Is it a sticking valve lifter  :-\ not uncommon if the car has been left un-started

Don't know, it sounded round about the aux belt area. Very high pitched, but not loud really, almost like someone was tapping a spoon off something metallic. I'll start it up tomorrow and see if I can catch it a bit earlier this time.

It did sound like something pinging against the water pump pulley.

Of course, nothing to say that it isn't coming from inside the waterpump.

Belt off and check it for any play or roughness, ideally from ice cold rather than just running.

Will give it a wee start up tomorrow see if I can get a better idea where it's coming from. Got between now and April before it goes back on the black so got some time for strip down and check (The car, not me!)

You need to spin the pulley by hand BEFORE you start it.

Ok, will do that first.

So bit of an update, but not really positively identifed the issue. I decided to take the aux belt off and check/spin the pulleys before it started, nothing that I could feel or hear wrong, apart from that slight play in the tensioner pulley.

Then started it up without the belt first to see if I could hear anything, nothing, then put belt back on to see if the noise came back, it didn't. I was half expecting it to, but then thought maybe playing about with the tensioner moved something in it, if it is that at fault.

After that I noticed a sort of low dull repeated scraping from what sounded like behind the belt cover, and when I put my hand on it, I could feel this dull repeating scraping sound.

So, not got to the source of the original problem, but now got another, and it sounds deeper this time! Need to do a bit more digging.

Change the tensioner pulley and report back.  :y

If the problem is BEHIND the belt cover  :o
you best STOP using or even starting the car and check the timing belt etc  PDQ
a shredded timing belt ,due to failing tensioner, idler or just bad belt only makes a repetitive sound for so long  :-X
then the engine dies  >:D

I’ve mentioned this on here before but many moons ago I had a new cam belt kit fitted on my Omega V6 by a garage just before going on holiday. I towed our caravan some two hundred miles to the site and when I was parking up on the pitch I heard a jingling noise. The jingle was coming from behind the cam belt cover and was constant. As a pessimist I always carried a near full toolkit in the boot so I spent the first day of my holiday stripping the car down. I found that the top adjuster pulley had worked loose and was jingling. With no locking kit I had to reset the crank/cams to the correct position and use bits of wood to wedge the cams. Luckily for me nothing had moved so it was relatively straightforward to sort it out. This is why I always stress the importance of tightening the adjustment pulley bolt whilst holding the nut at the correct tension, as they go opposite directions to set. I wished I’d have done it myself in the first place now.  ::)  As I said, mine was a constant jingle so hopefully not that but it does need investigating.  :y

A different car altogether (Audi A3 2.0 TDI), but my son heard a metallic tinkling sound which he said lasted about 5 seconds but then went away.  All's OK he thought. Carried on and the engine then came to an abrupt halt. Rang me, and I found the alternator pulley had sheared, and the auxiliary belt had broken and come off, got wrapped round the crank pulley under the timing belt which had jumped several teeth, destroying the valves in the cylinder head.
Due to its age and mileage it wasn't worth repairing....
Moral of this story - any metallic tinkling sound, switch off immediately and investigate the reason. Could be an expensive mistake - as my son found out.....

Cool, thanks for all the replies, I think now that I'm feeling this rubbing from the cover, it be worth investigating the TB. I don't think I could rest until I had tbh. Won't be doing it right now as car still in Winter mode but will get to it in the next Month or so and see what's what.

Luckily I heard the sound it was only for a few secs, you wouldn't hear it unless you were standing at the engine bay right after start up.

My Omega has the rubbing sound behind the belt cover when first started up. My previous Omega also did the same thing.
Im pretty sure there was some discussion about it on here many moons ago.

Any rubbing on the cover will be obvious with parts off.
