Title: Shagged battery or another cause?
Post by: Field Marshal Dr. Opti on 13 January 2023, 14:55:26
Bosch 74 A/H battery that has been with the car since I bought it.....July 2015.

Been struggling lately and the battery will go flat in 2-4 days.

Checked this morning with meter showing 12.1-12.3 volts without the engine running. Car then fails to start ( just clicking )

NOCO GB40 gets her going again without a problem.

I'm thinking that with the battery at least 7.5 years (possibly much older) old, I should buy a new battery first.

Is it likely to be anything else?.....alternator?....voltage regulator?....Brexit?...Aliens? ;)

New battery ...  :y

My view also, Mr Beanz.

I'm told a decent battery should hold about 12.7 Volts without the engine running.

If you can clip the meter on it so that you can see it as you turn ignition over you’ll probably find that it drops to around 8 Volts under load. Likewise, if you get it running you should see over 14 Volts to check alternator output. It’s done quite well so new battery time.  :y  You could always use Kevin’s battery charging/checking guide for peace of mind.  :y

I'm getting around 14.5 Volts with the silky V6 running.

Was that including or excluding delivery?

I used to use and recommend Tayna a lot, but stopped during this chinese sniffle, as people I'd recommended them to started to shout at me, for the length of time their cars were off the road due to Tayna being a bit slow on returns and testing.

My retort was if they had bothered to look after the battery during long periods of minimal use, they wouldn't have shagged them in the first place.  But I'm not sure I'd want to wait 4 weeks for a replacement, hence my last battery came from Hellfrauds, and around $40 cheaper than the the same one from Tayna by the time delivery charges were added.  With the added benefit I can go and shout at them if required.

An additional  £7.99 for postage, TB.

I'm hoping I won't need to return it during the 4 year warranty because I bet they will drag their feet with testing and pissing about to annoy the customer in general.

The battery on my Astra lasted seven years. I took my car to a garage, asked them to put a battery on it, gave them £70 and drove away. I have no idea what make of battery.
You people do make things more complicated than they need to be.

If we weren't so anal about our cars, we probably wouldn't be on here.  ???

Not sure how many A/H are needed to start a derv Astra.

£70 fitted sounds reasonable. It may be some budget brand but should still last longer than you will. ::)

The old Bosch battery had 680 CCA.....the new Exide 720 CCA which I presume is better.

Cold cranking amps?

£70 sounds about right for a Bosch Silver battery. Which is all that's needed on a daily driver.

Yes marginally better, basically means the internal resistance is a bit lower

Not that your application really needs mega cranking amps

I am certainly not patronising. I am obnoxious, insulting and, possibly, flatulent, but not patronising  ;D

In my experience of returning stuff to Amazon (proper, not Marketplace), as long as you don't go off script, they are very good at returns and refunds.  That said, the last return took a couple of weeks to be refunded, as the package got caught up in the RM strike.

Their slickness is what has helped them become the success they are.
