Title: Thanks, Mr Chrisgixer!
Post by: TheBoy on 10 April 2023, 09:08:35
I got in a bit of a mess doing rear pads yesterday.  I followed the process to put the handbrake in the service position not using the diags tool, which going by the noises, seemed to retract the handbrake, but no messages that it had actually done it.

Tooke the pads out, but couldn't push or wind the piston in, so got the diags tool out to use that to put handbrake into service position.  Unfortunately, just turning the ignition on was enough to cause the handbrake to come on, popping the piston out of the caliper in the process.

Fortunately that nice ex-member Gixer popped over to lend a hand at this point to see what could be done.

4 hrs later, we had managed to get 70 ball bearings and 10 springs back in to the handbrake actuator, and rebuilt that.  Tidied the caliper enough so it is short term usable (it's had water ingress and corroded badly, so needs refurb, looks like it had been binding as well (probably just replace it TBH)), and got it back together.  Car is movable now, and probably fine for short journeys, as I imagine we'll be hard pressed to get another caliper by next weekend, given the short week.  Need to give it a quick test drive.

Had a very quick look (it was not far off getting dark at this point) at other caliper on the other side, that looks badly corroded, but might be serviceable, half tempted to get a caliper for that side as well.

I'd like to thank chrisgixer for popping over yesterday to lend a hand, as it had seemed like a completely lost cause at one point when bearings and springs flew everywhere.

What a PITA!

Yeah, there's a bit of a knack to getting it into service mode but you do get a warning on the dash when successful.

Its kinda blessing in disguise, as I wouldn't have known how must corrosion was behind the dust seal.

I shall stick to using SDD to put it into service mode.  Bit of a pain, as its one of those SSD procedures that insists the battery voltage is high, so need to start plugging in power supplies to it.

Glad you and Mr Gixer managed to sort it between you.  :y  I have service mode on mine to do the rears but as I’m rather attached to my fingers I prefer to connect the battery charger and use VAGCom to keep the pistons retracted. As my start button is on the centre console I cover it to prevent accidentally leaning on it. I’ve already made that mistake once when I had the MMI in my hand while checking the shark fin nav/phone aerial cable and accidentally leaned across on to the start button, which turned the ignition on with nothing connected. Luckily I got away with it.  :-[
Anyway, hope it holds out for you.  :y

And yesterday I drove it over to chrisgixer's gaff (my driveway doesn't really allow for jacking up both sides at the same time if the neighbours are in) to fit a pair of new calipers to the back of it.  Obviously not before the ever lovely Mrs chrisgixer cooked us breakfast ;D

Thanks chrisgixer :y

.. and right on cue, the XE's rear pads started making a grinding noise today. Outside pads have reasonable meat on them so a stuck caliper or rusty back of the disk, I suspect.

I heard that noise from the rear on the A169 Whitby Road last week. Coming down a steep hill at 60mph with a less than 90° bend at the bottom.  ;D I had to remain calm and assure the wife that it was nothing serious, just a stone......or something. Managed to get it home with anticipation, keeping my distance, judicious use of the gears and braking ever so gently so as to just use the front brakes.
Garage said there was absolutely nothing left on the nearside rear pads, and not that much anywhere else. Pads on all corners, £198, and off we went.

Might be then ... I did have an Astra G at one time.

I know that I replaced the rear pads of my Omega once when there was next to F*** all lining left.  :-[

OSR inboard pad should have a sensor.

Calipers are the pretty standard ATE setup, where the slider pin gets exposed when the pads wear.  And being ATE, non standard allen size, 7mm I think for the rears - but I'm sure you'll have 7 and 9mm allens sockets for just such an occasion.
