My Galaxy S7 Edge is getting out of date Seems to be like the Wheel Tappaer & Shunters Social Club when trying to speak to people, I hear them but when the phone heats up they struggle to hear me.
Keep seeing the Galaxy S23 Ultra advertised and the Google Pixel Pro 7
Both seem excellent phones neither are cheap Google is £800/900 the S23U is £1400 (512GB version)
Dont know anyone who has either of these so wonderd if anyone in OOF land has got either of them.
Am leaning towards the Galaxy as I have been using thier mobiles for years with out too much hassle.
Looked at USwitch offering some amazing contracts but cant take my old number. (Unlimited Data/text/calls for same as I pay for 4Gb unlimted.
Could go via my phone provider and get interest free for 12/24/36 months with options for varible upfront paymts.
Also Paypal pay by 3 via my credit card delays 1st paymets depending on purchase date.
At the moment the camera on the S24 Ultra is swinging the choice.
I hate to owe money :-\
I am very indecicive ::)
I am getting . . . . :-X
the list goes on and on.

This mobile will be my treat for my Birthday this year
Past years have included my 3.0 Elite and a 2.5 CD (Both been brilliant cars) :) :y
Computers upgrades and a TV have made nice pressies
Gawd knows what I might fancy next year
-
My Daughter advised me to go with Tesco mobile and have had absolutely no problems, good choice of phones available.
-
Supplier not an issue for me its phone choice.
I have Three & Plusnet for my contracts. (Both £6 PM) if I have a new contract phone the price for calls / data / text will never be the some.
Interestingly I once tried Vodaphone and could not even manage to make a phone call from home
Not sure who covers Tesco signal.

Haven't a clue didn't really want one but she complained that she could never get hold of me ! Still quite often forget to take it out with me 😁

I have a 512GB Samsung S23 Ultra, which was a replacement for my S8. I bought mine outright direct from Samsung as I’m Sim only. Good camera, even in the dark, good zoom but the phone is noticeably bigger than my S8, which might annoy some people. It just fits in my automatic Auckley Wireless car holder, with about 8mm leeway on either side. I got the Samsung Ear Buds thrown in with mine but they’re of no use to me as I wear hearing aids. ::)
-
I'm still using a Blackberry Curve, so any input from me would be totally irrelevant. :D Same as normal really. ;)
-
All the phones seem identical with regards to doing what a phone should do, i.e. making calls, texting, WhatsApping, etc. The only things they push on the ads are the difference in the camera, which doesn't interest me at all.
I have a gayphone 11, more than enough for my needs.

My 2nd phone is an Oppo A9 2020 that weighs in at 195 grams, 6.5" screen and dual sim
The Galaxy is 234 Grams 6.8" screen , dual sim so just short of 40 drams heavier
When I bought the Oppo Carphone wharehouse told me it was capable of wireless charging (Sadly not the case)
So far then The Galaxy looks like the way to go :y
Excellent Camera
Dual Sim
Wireless charging
512 Gb memory
Just need a deal for the free buds included now.

I agree
The camera does appeal for me hence going for the higher spec ultra.
As for Apple I am best not saying a word. :-X :-X

What's a mobile phone ? ;)
-
I have an Asus Zenfone of some sort which I got off ebay about 3 years ago for around 100 notes. Does everything a pocket computer should and takes good photos too. :y
Oh.. I can even use it as a telephone as well. ::) ;D
-
iphone 5s here. £60 from ebay few years ago. Rolling monthly contract with Lebara. Unlimited calls, texts and I think 2gb of interweb for a fiver a month.
More than meets my needs.

Modern premium smartphones are bigger than 3 or 4 year old ones, and a lot more expensive.
If you're an Android fan, Samsung S series is hard to beat (ignoring cost), if you're an Apple user, iPhone 14 (go for Pro or Max versions if photos are important) is also an excellent phone.
Both these are huge steps up from things like S8/9 and iPhone 7/8/X in performance terms and photo capability. And both tend to get decent support from the manufacturer for a decent period of time, unlike many other brands of Android.
In the case of Android, I'd be more inclined to buy outright, and use a SIM only contract, as you get security and feature updates as soon as the handset manufacturer releases them, rather than waiting for your carrier to do so - and many don't bother, especially on less popular models. It usually works out cheaper anyway if you shop around for decent SIM only contracts.
-
And if cost is a factor, Samsung A series worth a look for Android fans, and iPhone SE for Apple fans.
Both are functionally "nearly" as good as their big brothers, although they tend to have more knobbled cameras.
-
I will be going for the S23 Ultra 512Gb (But I knew I probably would anyway)
Tho only major difference in technology I see so far is the the I14 range has satelite connectivity and Samsung have made no mention of this for thier phones yet.
-
I don't get excited about phones. As longs as it has a reasonable quality "feel" and works I'm happy.
For quite some years I've been sim free and buy outright and gone for whatever is mid-range Motorolla (currently on a G8 Plus) at about £200 or so and just replace it every 2/3 years. Works for me. I'm just not sure what an expensive handset brings to the table.

Skruntie....I have a pair of brand new unused Blackview Tube wireless headphones AirBuds 1. Any good for you?
You can have them if you want them. :y

Seems I just gained 1399 Nectar points ::)
Could not get any freebies from anyone no matter what I tried.
Also took advantage of the Paypal pay in 3 service - downside I tried to do it via credit card (For the cover etc) but guesing buyin a form of credit on credit was not an option.
Happy either way and got same day delivery. :y :y

It really is pot luck with the freebie’s. I ordered an S23 Ultra 512GB as an outright purchase for my wife in early March and at the time they offered a trade-in reduction or you could use a code which knocked £150 off the price, the latter being the option we took to allow data transfer direct from old phone to new phone in our own time. Just one week later I ordered another S23 Ultra 512GB as an outright purchase for me, and the trade-in reduction was for S20 upwards. The £150 reduction code had gone and had been replaced with free Samsung Air Buds2 instead, which are £219 on the Samsung website. As I say, just pot luck with the timing.
-
I looked at doing a trade in with my S7 Edge and it was valued at £0, would rather keep it as a backup :y :y
-
iPhone 13 mini from Giffgaff
Not too big
Brilliant camera
Does what it says in the tin
Battery holds up great upto now
5G good enough to watch Netflix on a firestick from my pikey van
Can't fault it tbh
-
Still using a Sony Xperia XZ Premium.
If only for the camera ::)

There were some good deals for pre-ordering the S23's. I think I was offered one half price, but as it was still over £600, I declined ;D. But certainly was one of the best pre-order discounts I've seen on Samsung phones.

The good ol' US of A has implemented this a while back, and even when I was last there, was getting a lot of them about the bit of wind that was approaching....

Are you sure it wasn't them getting messages about the bit of wind approaching ;D

It's arguably another way of striking the fear of God into people, especially now that TCV is little more than a wet tissue. :-X
That said, if there was an imminent likelihood of a Tornado flattening my timber frame house, then the heads up to get into the storm shelter might be appreciated ;)
-
The Eagles were right. We are all just prisoners here, of our own device(s). :)
-
Ordered one yeasterday lunch time, was setting it up when it was delivered at 7pm.
Mega impressed with the sound quality and and and etc. :D :D
Wish I got one ages ago. :-X
I was sceptical as the info I had read said it was heavier the my Oppo A9 2020, but the S23 Ultra is actually lighter and thinner.
Getting hacked off though trying to get a PAYG sim, but they all seem to last 30 days and then require a payment (So more or less a monthly plan)
Where I live the signal is sketchy from village to village hence I have a Three and a Plusnet contact (Both £6 each 1Gb/Ul/Ul and 7GB/Ul/Ul) but now that I have a spare phone I would like a sim similar to my my old Orange sim, £10 lasted me all year .
Am still looking ::)
-
Most still offer PAYG, though many offer those bundles of call/texts/data on top as a very popular option, because the millennials need constant data and SMS.
I currently use Giffgaff pure PAYG (that hasn't been topped up in years) as a secondary SIM to my contract EE. Obviously, I don't purchase GiffGaff's "Goodybag" bundles, as its only a fill in for when EE has no signal or refuses to work.
-
Try 1p mobile for an EE based PAYG sim,
https://www.1pmobile.com/index.taf?friend=M155386J (we both get an extra £5 if yu use this link)
£10 every 3 months, or as needed, and builds up credit.
I keep one and 2nd SIM as an alternative to when o2 is poor.

Cheers for that. Ordered allready. :y

No probs
Ive found them to be good.
Do a varity of packages to suit.
5G works as well.
I'd avoid doing a speedtest however as that will eat a large chunk of data pretty fast.
-
Good idea reagrds the speed test :y :y
Looked it up they are on the EE network. :y :y

Yep. That's why Jimbob said they were on the EE network.

Be aware, for those easily lead by marketting bullshit, Evil Everywhere (and all other UK operators) currently deploy 5G in what is known as NSA, which essentially means its 5G on the RAN side, but uses all of the 4G infrastructure.... ....and guess where all the bottlenecks are.
Hardly any of the benefits of 5G can be realised until we start getting 5G SA, which is happening slowly in the UK, partly due to the distraction of the government mandate to remove Hauwei kit from the networks, and the delays from the pandemic - these are all long term, time consuming projects.
So for the next year or 2, don't get hung up on 5G.... ...unless you are reliant on 3G, as some networks are planning on completely turning off 3G in the next year or 2, in which case you'll need the 5G (even in NSA) for the signal.
Brakkers EE now has 5G as from a few days ago. Approx 40Mbps down, 8Mbps up, both spikey. Exactly the same as it was on 4G ;D
-
For clarity, certain other Chinky kit is also having to be removed from vital parts of network infrastructure. And SA/NSA stands for Standalone and Non-Standalone, with Standalone having dedicated high capacity backhauls and infrastructure to support it, NSA using existing 4G backhauls and infrastructure.

Actually, I have a question, probably one for Mr DTM....
Presumably the telematics in her car is 3G, rather than 4G? So when 3G gets turned off, will is step back to 2G or simply stop working?
