Car insurance has gone up by over £200.
Still slightly cheaper than anything on the comparison sites.
:'( :'( :'(

My Dad says that as a general warning and cannot believe he has two OAP sons!

Don't get old?
Too late ;D

Depends if you are living or merely existing.
Many old people are dragging their battered corpse like bodies around for years. What is the point. :)

Fortunately, I don't resemble that remark.
-
it seems that insurance has generally gone up a lot .... a few lads at work were recently complaining about how much theirs had gone up
-
The Range Rover premium went up by £18 so quite reasonable compared to some.

However old Lord Opti claims he is, I'm a lot younger! >:D 8)
So with his dog years reckoning, I'm 19. :y
-
Hardly surprising, as nobody can drive now. Everywhere I go I get delayed because some morons have managed to have a shunt
-
The fun is being taken out of driving now by idiots on the road with no idea at all, all they want to do is get from a to b with no enjoyment or involvement…. Allegedly I sometimes traverse many of the great driving roads on the mountains nearby to relieve myself and get the cobwebs out. ( no sheep involved) 🐑😂😂😂😂

Just had my renewal through for the Zaf, a 50% increase from M&S to £390 - jokers.
Shopped around and managed to limit the damage to an £11 increase ::)

That is about forty quid more than I pay to insure the humble 2 series. ::)

Clearly they've spotted my youthful exuberance and are charging me accordingly >:D

Yes, that must be it :D

In 5 years my insurance has gone by £400.
Haven't had a claim for over 20 years, and that wasn't my fault.

I tended to stick with the same companies and having 3 cars I stayed with Admiral Multi Car for quite a while. As I Sorned 2 of the cars I had just the one to insure and at 1st they did me a good deal.
Over a period of time (when there was a fuss about the female premiums) and prices started to drop, Admiral prices rose instead. So I was about to renew and look for a better deal and Admiral not only took money from my bank without my permission (£750ish) whilst I was in hospital and unable to ring them, once sorted I paid around £250/270. (£500ish refunded)
After that I tried the comparison sites, was surprised when I got a deal for £150, Used the comarison sites since. Been with the RAC last 2 years. :y :y

2 years is about right.
Year one they give you a good deal.
Year two they put the price up but are still just about competitive.
By year three they have decided you are a lazy bastard who CBA to shop around and so add 30-50%
....I believe the old scouse lad has been with the same insurance company for 87 years. 8)
-
....
and Admiral not only took money from my bank without my permission ( .....
Hastings did that to me years ago. I phoned in the week between Christmas & New Year to tell them NOT to auto renew, They took a monthly payment at the end of Jan. The first girl I spoke asked why I didn't just cancel it ..... ??? WTF would I cancel a policy when there was about a week to go?
I've never used them since! (maybe I should let it go after nearly 20 years! ::)
-
I found my insurance was more exspensive in Dec, so renewed in May saving a fair chunk. 8)
Also keep ringing the same company, different person on the phone often gets a discount. :y
But as Opti mentioned, cheap 1st time , increased premium if they get away with it 2nd time, 3rd time is a piss take.

Some insurance companies won't quote you over the age of 80.
Those that do, on the comparison sites, quote anything from £800+ to £3500.
I've got full no claims, and a ROSPA gold advanced driving certificate (which they don't recognise).

The premiums for the old and cautious tend to mirror the premiums for young and foolish.
I wonder if this is fair.
I currently occupy the bit in the middle, so affordable (for now) :)

Unfortunately, older people who have accidents tend to have more spectacular ones than most. And unfortunately usually because they are no longer medically fit to drive but haven't been checked or assessed for conditions that might otherwise be assumed to be normal for age such as slower reactions or reduced spatial awareness.
This obviously has an impact on those in perfect health who have every right to remain independently mobile. Whether there's a case for claiming ageism on the part of insurers, or not, is a different question but individually, the cost of bringing such a claim would be more of a legacy than of direct benefit.

I think high premiums for old people is 90% down to old women.
'Most' of the old men seem OK.....but the old ladies will insist on driving their beige Honda Civic through shop front windows, wiping out the girl on the till and half a dozen customers. ::)
The 'old girls' get confused between the go and the stop pedals, you see. ::)

From my experience of having recovered many of these crashes, you're wrong. Old women tend to have a continuing low speed crash, and old men have a more serious single impact. Actually, we don't need the 'old' in that sentence.
I've stated several times here that I don't think old people should swap to automatic cars as they age because you are partially right about the pedals. Although it's not confusion, but terror causing them to freeze in place.
As for insurance companies being ageist, their entire business is based on collecting, analysing and using data. Anyone who thinks their own gut feeling gives them a valid case against that is almost certainly going to be proved wrong. That applies to anything where gut feelings or the even more risible 'common sense' is touted as a valid argument

My Father in law said he would stop driving as soon as he reached 80 years of age, he had always had powerful vehicles Jaguar, Aston Martin etc. He did so true to his word and if he needed transport we always obliged, I will definitely do the same as I think it's a very sensible decision.

That's the reason I took the ROSPA advanced driving test to make sure I was still capable and able to drive safely.
I passed at gold standard, but that means 'f' all to the insurance companies.
If I had failed, I would most certainly have given up my car.
Unfortunately, I am grouped into the doddering old farts that definitely shouldn't be on the road.

I think a yearly eye examination/sight test may not be a bad idea though......regardless of age even.

I wonder how many of us would fail the driving test if were required to take it again unannounced?
Quite a number. :-X

I have several ROSPA certificates from my years in the London Ambulance Service + advanced high speed & night driving course certificates as you say they mean absolutely nothing ,I mentioned them years ago to my insurance provider it made no difference at all, I have noticed nowadays that very few drivers seem able to "read the road" and proceed straight into incidents that could & should be easily avoidable & it's not always the elderly driver.
-
Half of them can't even read the road SIGNS ,let alone read the road ::)

A38 (streethay Lichfield to Alrewas) recently .
it's been reduced from NSL to 40 with average speed cameras for weeks due to HS2 works (though no one is ever working on the A38 when i drive down it daily ::) people dob't understand how average speed works :-X
An example of the idiots NOT reading the signs is, for the last week ,a large section has been reduced to ONE lane .
800 yards (and every 200 Yards there after) before the single lane section are signs saying "USE BOTH LANES WHEN QUEING " and "MURGE IN TURN" .
Idiots Block the "fast" lane and dawdle along with the other idiots in lane one at 2MPH causing a massive mile long tailbacks >:(

not only signs being blocked by vegetation, but also line of sight at junctions etc ,causing accidents .

Yep. Plenty of grass verges at junctions round here. If they're not mowed it's impossible to see if it's safe to pull out without actually pulling out. Lots of shouty voices, beepy horns and filled underwear.

There's a speed camera near here which is totally obscured by the hedge grown up in front of it. :y
Thing is the hedge has been cut around the camera with a tractor mounted flail cutter and the operator obviously couldn't be arsed to get out and clear the bit in front of the camera by hand. ;D

Quite a number. :-X
A number of years ago, when I was invited to do a speed awareness course, in the days when it was both classroom & practical driving on the road, I was told I wasn't allowed to left foot brake in the automatic car ..... just incase I pressed both at the same time! So that would be a fail ..... obviously I would never exceed the speed limit!
But we all know what we should or shouldn't be doing when driving. So if a driving test was suddenly sprung on us, we'd know to look in our mirrors every 50 ft .... not cross our arms when turning the wheel ....tyres & tarmac etc etc etc

Depends where you live, doesn't help that I've got a Birmingham Post code.
If I lived 2 miles north I would be paying about the same as your mom.

No idea what Mum pays, but its irrelevant, she needs a car, so she has to suck it up. When the day comes she can't drive safely*, she needs to move less rural.
