Title: I need a bigger car
Post by: STEMO on 03 November 2023, 15:38:49
Been looking at estates, but there's not many that take my fancy. I was think of a RAV4 diesel auto, they seem quite reasonable on price, if somewhat pedestrian to drive. Anyone have any experience of them on a day to day basis?

Estates seem thin on the ground these days and demand a premium ££

If I could turn back time, I would have my Omega Estate back. Great car, oh how I miss the huge amount of space when the seats were down. Since I bought the Mazda 6 Saloon, and it has a massive boot area..... I keep telling swmbo, we should have gone for the Estate version  :( :(

Toyota or Subaru Steve, can't go wrong with either I've had both & never had a problem with either, our current 2005 Forester has done 56,000 miles & has never failed an MOT & has never had a repair of any kind just routine servicing.

I do around 17,000 miles a year, Mick, so that Forester would be on around 300,000 miles by now  ;D

I can recommend the Volvo V70.  :y

It's a comfy old barge with acres of space with the back seats up or down and the D5 motor has plenty of grunt.  :)

If the V70 is too big for your needs then the V60 would be worth a look.  :y

The newer ones cost a fortune, which I really can't justify for a mobile dog kennel, and the older ones mostly have starship miles. I also notice the older ones have very little in the way of tech. My poxy 7 year old Astra has more...android auto, apple play, etc.

Yup fair enough. Might be worth considering something that is ULEZ/CAZ compliant which means Euro 6 if you're sticking with diesel or Euro 4 and above for petrol?  ???

If Labour get in next year Clean Air Zones will spread like a rash around the country.  :(

I think my next car will be compliant.  ::)

Both of our cars are Euro 6 diesels, but I very much doubt I'd have to worry about that in Barnsley  ;D

You've only owned the latest Astra for 5 minutes. :)

My best mate has a Mk4 Mondeo estate and has done for a good number of years. Other than a clutch and DMF it's never needed anything much beyond service items and it's on 145k now.

In the time he's owned it he's abused it renovating three houses and hasn't been fastidious with the maintenance, so overall it seems like a tough old barge.

It's also big and comfy and can have plenty of toys if you venture up then trim levels.

Yep good call.  This (https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202310293445014?sort=relevance&advertising-location=at_cars&body-type=Estate&fuel-type=Diesel&make=Ford&maximum-mileage=100000&minimum-badge-engine-size=2.2&model=Mondeo&postcode=dt73nb&fromsra) is the estate version of my Mondeo. Titanium X with the 2.2 Transit engine.  :y

Although this (https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202308291301060?sort=relevance&advertising-location=at_cars&aggregatedTrim=Vignale&body-type=Estate&fuel-type=Diesel&make=Ford&maximum-mileage=100000&model=Mondeo&postcode=dt73nb&year-from=2015&fromsra) is probably more up Uncle STEMO's street.  :)

My son has a 2019 VW Passat Business estate with the 150 TDi engine. Very economical, cheapish road tax (not quite as cheap as his 2.0 TDi Audi A3 he had for years previously, but still cheap). Now approach8ng 100k, it is extremely reliable, and has an absolutely massive rear load area - equally as big as my 3.2 Omega Estate. Loads of useful toys as well, rather than stuff you think would be good to have but never use - only useful for helping to sell it when the time comes.

Unless the Astra is a hatch, you're not going to gain much rear space with a RAV4.

I've been a passenger in a Rav4. Capacious is not a word I would use to describe it.

Pretty compact/small from what I remember. :-\

If the old boy has any sense he'll invest in a Signum.

With the rear seats folded flat there is plenty of room for the whippet. :)

Even the 161hp D3 V70 has enough grunt for me and is pretty good on economy. But care needed there is also a 134hp D3 which probably has less ooomph.

I think I still had my last Omega in 2013. A 2.6 MV6

In 2015 I bought the mighty Signum.

In 2016 I bought my first Jaguar XFR.
In 2017 My second Jaguar XFR

In 2023 I bought a new BMW M240i  X-Drive.

So 5 in total, I think.

Frugal with cars, you see. :)

You won't find one and if you do it'll need more welding, servicing and repairs to get it on the road than is viable. The newest Omega is 20 years old and i'm sorry to say, but it's time to look at other newer cars.
