Good afternoon guys, hope you’re all well.
Haven’t driven the omega for a while and I’m using it over the Christmas period. Drives beautiful as always. But no speedo and no rev counter. Temp and fuel gauges still working. And the rev needle is flickering really fast.
I’m hoping it’s not the start of ABS ECU needing doing but if it is I’ll have to make time for it. Any ideas?
Oh and no ABS or TC lights on, just the issue with the dials 🥰🥰🥰
-
This seems quite a common fault :(
more so on 2.6 & 3.2
swapping the binnacle solves it ,so there's obviously something wrong with the clusters
you need to swap the binnacle from the same engine size ;)
-
Something like THIS clicky (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/175971172218) is a quick solution if you need an MOT (working speedo is required)
-
Have you recently jump started it, or used a shitty old battery charger? Some of the faulty ones I'm aware of might have been due to to these...
-
Thanks boys. So we think it’s the cluster? If so I’ll whip it off and send it to ECU testing or BBA. Thanks all and merry Christmas.
Ps TB no jumping/charging recently 🥰🥰🥰
-
Mine's a 2.5 like yours Webby, and it did exactly the same a few years ago, flickering needle and no rev counter speedo.
In the end I removed the binacle, cleaned the contacts and refitted, but it didn't make much difference.
However I got better results after removing and checking / cleaning the 2 big round multi-plug connectors by the fuse box. It's been running fine for 3 years without a problem.

Several OOFers have swapped the cluster to resolve it .
mileometer still works ,just the tach and speedo needles die
it can start working again .then die again :(
-
Always worth reseating the cluster on its connector, but ultimately it does seem to be the cluster itself that fails, particularly on FL models.
At one point I wondered if it was it was losing its coding due to age, but I'm sure I reapplied that on some of Gixer's several failed clusters.

Hello, interesting, what is this "Reseating Cluster", how to do this?

indeed :y
BUT...
You have to use the official GENUINE VAUXHALL RESET TOOL (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/325552496947) "purchased from a dealer, that you walk into" or you invalidate the warranty :-X

The bumper installation tool of window trim installation tool both work really well.
Bitch mittens not required and there's possibly even a guide for it :y

i've owned a lot of Vauxhalls , so having the right tools to work on them makes sense
-
I have an 8lb sledge hammer ,that will fix it!!
-
That's exactly like my dash cluster, sometimes worked other times not.car's been parked in garage for a couple of years or so and if I remember rightly the rev counter needle is sat pointing at about 500revs or so.Other more important things to fix on the car first[when I can work up the enthusiasm to bother] then I'll worry about cluster.

You'd have to hit it at least twice
if not two and a half times :D
-
the issue which affected mine also killed the fuel and temp guages . the speedo and tacho froze at any given position. swapping the cluster did solve the issue BUT i slso wanted to mend the fault on the original cluster and refit it . i found the fault on mine was the double layer pcb board linking eyelets failing fue to the immense geat that the area behind the cluster attracts !
if you can remove this yourself you may find that a few of them are noticeably black / burnt. you can then link them out yourself if you are able to . its not too micro surgery but can be done easily.
or send it off to a repair place and hope they find / fix them

Ideally remove, clean the contacts, and reinstall - there is a guide over in the guides section.
Or put your bit of hand between palm and wrist on the right side of the speedo and firmly press suddenly - if the panel has started to work out, you'll feel it reseat.
-
Thanks, I read first "reset", so a bit misunderstanding, now clear.
-
Thanks for all your help boyos. I’ve just fixed monster exhaust leak between cat and centre on the OS. So now I can turn my attention to this. It actually started working normally on Christmas Day. And not it’s back to no speedo and a vibrating rev counter 🤣🤣🤣
I’ll defo try cleaning contacts and reseating connections 🙏🙏🙏😃😃😃
Thanks all for your help.
Ps had an obnoxious exhaust for couple weeks now. I actually enjoyed it and I’ve never been in to go faster parts 🤣🤣🤣 but do love the quietness now it’s sorted 🙏🙏🙏

Check for further damage as some pokey scrote may have taken a fancy to the cats but been disturbed before they could finish the job :-\

Ps guys while I’m messing around with these little annoying faults… the passenger front door doesn’t lock or unlock via the central locking. As I’ve got a bit of time…
is it likely it’ll be the latch/motor assembly? And more to the point the micro switch in the motor as per this guide…

Cheers guys 🥰🥰🥰

Thanks DG. The solenoid being part of the latch and motor assembly?
Almost certainly the cl solenoid ;)
-
There's a guide, but yup, held onto the latch by two screws... Once you've removed the latch ;)
-
Great stuff thanks mate. If it’s not repairable best off eBay for 2nd hand one?
-
I would suggest buying a second hand one, replacing the switches then swapping it in ;)
Just remember that the front and rear ones are different :y
Oh, and while you have the latch out clean the mechansim with brake cleaner and then oil it with 3in1 or similar ;)
-
Awesome cheers DG much appreciated 🥰🥰🥰🥰

Are Omega parts still readily available these days? :-\
-
Just sent a message to "STEVE" he has repaired solenoids with new switches in the past.but some time ago.
-
If it comes down to replacing the dash cluster(assuming you can find a known good one) is there a way to alter mileage to match the original one or do you have to go with incorrect mileage being shown?

Yes. Carefully.
