Title: Might be buying a runaround for the UK
Post by: Varche on 12 August 2024, 20:27:38
Got quite a reasonable quote for fully comp for a couple of tearaway expats exiled to the land of milk and honey.

So started looking around for maybe five year old car to keep at my dads. Think we are here for a while.

Looking at a dealer secondhand. Des Winks at Scarborough have a grey semi Golf https://www.deswinks.com/stock/18382800-volkswagen-golf-se/?finances%5Bdeposit%5D=1799.5&finances%5BproductName%5D=Personal%20Contract%20Purchase&finances%5Bterm%5D=48&finances%5BproductType%5D=Personal%20Contract%20Purchase&finances%5BannualMileage%5D=10000&finances%5Bdescription%5D=

Can't afford to buy private.

Any negotiating advice appreciated? Obviously no trade in.

Do you really need to pay that much for a car to run around in while you're over here? A golf is quite expensive, why not a ford or Vauxhall?

Or a 15 year old car. Cheap and old doesn't have to be unreliable.

If you've got it enjoy it , that's our motto now you can't take it with you. The Toyota we've just bought from a main dealer would not move on the screen price & in all honesty it was the same price as Motorpoint were selling at and they will not move on prices either. We got all the extras they normally try to sell you absolutely free about £1200 worth , if we hadn't have got some kind of deal we would have simply walked away, we were cash buyers so wanted a deal of some kind, very pleased with the deal in the end. So my advice is to push till you get what you want. We did the same in Spain a couple of months back when we bought the Fiat.

Agreed Rangie. We are both used to driving a Golf. Controls and so on. Currently we have a free upgrade VW Polo semi. On the face of it a nice two year old car but we don’t like it. It yaws on the road.
Can’t understand why. Maybe narrower track. The brakes are harsh.  Car doesn’t even have Jesus handles but does have ACC.

Anyway back to negotiating. Back in the day it was car mats.

Yesterday, I noticed some came with one years unlimited mileage warranty, one years roadside assistance, one years mot cover. Whilst others were two years each. Is roadside cover the same as say “ breakdown from the RAC”?  So that maybe a tool. Unlimited isn’t much use as being non uk residents the insurance goes up on 5000, 10,000 unlimited….

Is Autoglym life shine worth having? It is £295. “ protective barriers to upholstery, paintwork and glass” . Anti seagull?

On our estate we bought a boot liner( about £80)  excellent investment but probably not available for a hatchback.

Hard to say if its worth it or not, but £295 is a bit much. Its not a ceramic coating, which is more expensive than that so I'm not sure what exactly you're paying for... If it were me, I'd save the £300 and use it for 15x £20 valets so that the car is clean and fresh every time you come back to the UK and want to use it.

Or, maybe 13 valets and a decent battery conditioner so that it will start when you come to use it  :y

They are available, and there's no need to spend that much. When I had my e-golf (same shape as the one you linked) I had the one I've linked below. It was half way between a mat and a tray, sort of semi-rigid with a 1" lip round it so any spills are contained. Thoroughly recommend  :y

I got all of those at no cost the treatment on the paintwork looks fantastic.

I wasn't thinking of buying it! Just saying throw that in and we will have it.

From experience, the VW batteries on wretched stop start equipped cars, last fours years and one day.  Too late in life to be buying a battery conditioner.

I like the boot tray. A most excellent piece of kit.

Once the warranty has run out, you can use an OBD2 scanner alongside your mobile phone to default the start stop to off.  :y

.

I paid the full screen price as he wouldn't budge on that but got all the other listed completely FOC
Protech treatment ( ceramic coating + interior protection) £400
Carpets & bootmat £145
Smartguard 24 months £349
I paid for 3 year service plan should have been £543 reduced by £200 because I paid outright rather than monthly DD.
So a total of goodies £894 + a £200 saving, if we hadn't of got this we would have walked away.
The paint treatment is fantastic the car is a metalflake red and really gleams. The screen price was very fair exactly the same as one Motorpoint had but had done 7,000 more miles.

You forgot to add depreciation to the list. Take it back to them and see what they'll buy it back for...

Firstly a two year old hire car has probably been crashed/stuffed into a kerb at least once which is why it won't drive true.

Unless it's a manufacturer approved used car, ithe warranty won't be worth a wet tissue in a brothel, however, all UK VAG products leave the factory with a two year unlimited mileage warranty and a mileage limit of 60k for the third year.

Shop carefully.

I'm sure you'll be fine whatever you decide, I would imagine like myself you're experienced enough to  choose a vehicle that has been correctly cared for, good luck with your search & ensure you bag a great deal..👍
