Collected our Boxer from the rescue kennels this morning, he is an absolute stunner & so good. We lost our boy Buddy 3 months ago and couldn't be without one it's been awful walking without one, so glad to be back in the routine.
-
Dogs are wonderful friends. I would love to have one, but couldnt look after it properly, due mainly to not being able to walk long distances most of the time.
Im happy with the little Tortoise though. I can keep up with that. ;D

Good for you. We lost our dog in January to cancer. Still miss him like crazy. Can't have another one . We are decrepit now. Can't imagine what we would be like in ten years.

I'm hoping he'll keep us both fit we always walk for a couple of hours every day & I like to swim regularly , he's only 3 years old so hopefully he'll go on for at least another 7 or more years then I'll be well on my way towards 80 so maybe a smaller dog would be more suitable. You do miss them only dog lovers would understand.

If I thought I could get away with it, I would take our Tibetan Terrorist to work with me.

I lasted eight months after we lost Poppy. My life changed completely, I was trying to pretend that it was ok walking with my mates and their dogs, but it really wasn't. Weekends were spent walking around town, drinking overpriced coffee and buying stuff we didn't need. There was also the fact that I was 69, should I get an older rescue instead of a brand new westie?
I'm so glad we made the right decision. Kenny is great company and gets me out walking in all weathers, every day.

We collected Buddy from the dogs home, he's a Collie/Lurcher cross & is now about 22 months old. He's brilliant .... other than when he was at the vets yesterday after eating a load of grapes! Cher-ching ... £182 please!!!!!!

Looks like butter wouldn't melt, but he's a little bastard ;D
He's never white, more a browny grey, always trying to hang on to spaniels ears so they can't run away from him, farts like a grown man and stinks like three day old cabbage ;D

This is the longest we have been without a dog almost three months & I hated every day being without one, our daily routine was shattered , we've always had insurance but very few claims I'm thinking of just putting the money by in a savings account instead.

My son has just spent out on his dog, with a big helping hand from me. His dog ran into long grass and got a piece caught in his eye. Removal of grass, X-rays and follow up - £600. It caused an ulcer to form on the dogs eye so more X-rays and medication- £700. The medication didn’t resolve the issue so surgery required to either remove the eye or cut out the ulcer. That’s on top of his usual £80 here and £80 there for bleeding claw etc. ::) Thankfully the surgery to remove the ulcer was successful so he still has his eye - at a cost of £2K. This is the expense of owning a dog unfortunately. To insure his dog he was quoted over £180 per month, and there would still be maximum payout clauses, so he takes the risk.

Don't see many Boxers about these days. Have they gone out of fashion? If so why? :-\

Kenny is £44 a month with kennel club. But from past experience I know that will in three figures by the time he's eight.
Eight is the magic number when insurance companies try to price you out, they know what might be coming. Bastards.

My Aunties mum had one ( Monty) when I was a kid, he was huge but a real softie I used to walk him regularly for her round the local parks in South London just fell in love with the breed.Deezil is our eighth we've had two females the rest have been males we had the two females at the same time & a pair of litter brothers Ollie & Spencer who I think will always be my favourite.

………so we pick Deezil up tomorrow ……

On his paperwork his name is spelt the same as your lads, I changed it to be more personal to us, however SWMBO keeps referring to him as Denzil..😂

And who doesn't love a 4 legged furry friend :y. Plus I'm sure Kenny is a million times more handsome than you STEMO ;D
We have moggies instead, more because they can fend for themselves better when we're out all day at work, but maybe when retirement comes we could get a woofie. One of my bros just retired and got the world's cutest spaniel but obviously its mad as a hatter and insanely energetic.

Insurance paid for 1 of Mollys cruciate ligaments ..... 12 months later I paid for the other ... £3000 please. In her last year she had her spleen removed which was another £3k plus the various extra charges for different tests.
As you say, they can be bloody expensive! But we love them.

You can see the collie more than anything. Far too lively for me.....they don't have an off switch. But...if there's greyhound in there, that might compensate. They love a good kip.
-
Loveliest dog we ever had was a border collie cross with a bearded collie and the black lab we had before that.
-
It's good to see fellow dog lovers on here, I'm always wary of people who say " I/ we don't like dogs" we struck up so many conversations with dog walkers when we were last in Yorkshire after we'd lost our boy ,met some really nice people.

This thread has made me both happy and sad. Happy that there are so many dog lovers on here, but sad because I am still grieving over the loss of my chocolate Labrador in June. Over the course of almost 14 years he became, not just a dog, but a best mate.
I know I need another, but my memories of 'Buttons; are still fresh. Can any anyone who has lost a beloved pooch let me know how to move on, dog-wise?

So sorry to hear about Buttons :'(
Do nothing for now, it's very easy to fill that hole quickly and then realise, too late, that you've made a mistake. Give yourself time to get used to your new routine and then you'll be in a position to make a decision based on practicality rather than emotions.
I found my life to be empty without Poppy, but there are a lot of things we give up to make sure Kenny has a good life. Not everyone will want to do the same but, of course, you have vast experience of having a dog.
You never forget, I still call Kenny 'Pops' now and again, but you know there's no substitute for that bond you form with your (new) best mate.
If I were you I'd set a date, maybe after Christmas, and see how I felt then. Just my opinion.

I know exactly how you are feeling, we lost Buddy on the 2nd of June he was 10years & 2 months old we had him from the rescue at 8 months old , he had suffered a terrible start to his life with beatings, it took a long while to gain his trust and at one point my wife wanted to return him but I was determined to give him the life he deserved, at 18 months old he was the perfect dog, I cried like a baby when he passed and thought I'd never have another, but it's like a switch you'll know when the time is right , you'll always remember your best friend & you certainly can't replace them, but it's worth moving on and giving another the life they deserve. I took have been calling Deezil Buddy just like Steve , must be an age thing but I'll get there eventually..👍
-
I've never owned a dog as i don't really want the responsibility of looking after one. That said, i do like interacting with dogs when i go for my long, (to me), walks. I sometimes take my kids/grandkids mutts for the occasional walk though. :)
-
We haven’t had a dog for several years now, since we lost our Spaniel ’Poppy’. It broke my heart at the time and I had no desire to repeat that experience at that time. She was our third dog and I honestly thought that we would get another dog, especially when we were both fortunate enough to take early retirement, but time has passed now, and with other commitments I doubt we’ll get another. I’ll have to make do with making a fuss of my son’s dog. :y

Nothing can be said that will provide solace in the gaping chasm of sadness :'(
That said, consider another, but don't rush headlong into another.
At some point down the road, you'll either think about another or circumstance will rule against it but you should never make an impulsive decision driven by grief or anger. Actually that's true of much of life, but rushing into another dog will be a replacement rather than a new beginning and that's not fair on you or the dog.
We were devastated when we lost our previous Tibetan Terrorist, but we resisted the almost overwhelming urge to get another for almost a year.
8 years and counting with our current Tibetan Terrorist and we've no regrets. Looking forward to getting home toy bed warmer on Monday... Even if she does like getting up before brunch :D

I used to have two frenchies, lost them in my divorce. It took me a long time to make peace with it, and to this day I don't know where they are or how they are, and every now and then it catches me off guard and makes me hugely sad.
My OH finally persuaded me to look again and we now have this snoring, farting, hairy house hippo.
And I wouldn't be without her 8)

She's a solid lump for sure, but not that big for an English Bully, maybe 14" at the shoulder. 24kg though and not much fat on her. ;D

Vet visit this morning full health check and booster vaccination, he has to be neutered being a rescue but advised to wait until later in the year as the poor lad has been through enough at present, we're both truly amazed at how quickly he has got into routine.

It was quite funny Deezil wasn't too keen on letting Julia our vet look at his teeth but didn't mind her jiggling his balls around, when she commented on this I saw SWMBO look at me as if to say "please keep your mouth shut"..😂

Majority of bull breeds are exactly the same, look like real hardcases but in reality are softies.

One of my granddaughters has a French Bully. She's a great little dog, until the little shit attacks my shoe laces. ;D

She has the best nature of any dog we've ever owned. She is unendingly patient with the kids, far more so than I am that's for sure! Other than the near-constant flatulence, there's nothing I'd change about her!
Will your boy travel to Spain with you?

No definitely not , Boxers as with a lot of the bull breeds feel the heat because of their nasal structure, fine if they've always lived in Spain but I'm not prepared to risk it , he'll be well looked after by our daughter ( the grandsons love him) + we have the option of our friend who has a farm , we look after his German Shepherds when he goes to his place in Greece.
