I'm getting the spanner warning light coming on now and again, code reader says 1 DTC found, but never a code. I've tried it a few times but nothing, and car the is running perfectly. I know this is one of those 'how long is a piece of string?'' questions, but I've got a 500mile rounder to do next week and don't want to push my luck with a possible developing fault......if there is one?? :-\
-
Try the pedal trick, as probable the generic code reader is a piece of junk.
-
Can you do the pedal trick on a 3.2? did it on the 3.0 which worked OK.

I assure you you didn't do a pedal trick on an Omega 3.0.
Pedal trick works on 2.6/3.2 :y
-
Tbf there's nothing saying you can't use a bike pedal rather than a paperclip on a cable throttle car...
Pedal trick works on my 3.2 :y
-
Actually it wasn't the 3.0,it was an early 2.0 that wasn't OBD compatible, I stand corrected. :)
-
Pedal trick works on 2.2, 2.6 and 3.2, everything else is a paperclip to flash the codes out.

Not sure about 2.2, dont think it does on either petrol or diesel. Nor does it work on BMW engined Omegas.
2.2 petrol, 2.6 and 3.2 are broadly OBDII compliant, though the 2.2 is really fussy. Technically, they are all only EOBD compliant.
-
My 03 Desmond did allow the pedal trick, a couple of other.cars that I worked on ;)

99% certain it didn't work on Tunnie's 2.2 or AA's 2.2, hence they needed tech2. Tunnie's was definately on the latest firmware available for his engine ECU....
Maybe there are some odd variants about :)

Pedal trick shows PO571, Cruise control/brake switch ''A'' malfunction, hence having no brake lights upon checking. So now the question...is this a standard brake switch, or being linked to the cruise control is it different to a non cruise switch?
-
The guide for retrofitting cruise control should clarify :y
A quick look suggests the brake light switch is universal, but manual cars require the clutch switch to be fitted as well.
So to answer your question simply replacing the brake light switch should solve the issue.
As an aside, if you press the brake pedal with the ignition on/engine off, can you hear a click by the selector lever and does it change out of park without issue?
-
Unfortunately....no click from the selector, whether that will change with a new brake light switch fitted. Also there's a hint of an electrical gremlin in the hazard lights which will need attention from my rubber hammer. ::)

You mean fortunately, it means it's definitely the brake switch.

good point from dg above . does it actually come out of park ? . we assume so cos you have never said car was undriveable or is the solenoid system somehow not in use ???
-
Car is/was driveable, until I did the pedal test, sort of blessing in disguise, as I was going to take it up North....and thinking 200+ miles up the M6 and back again without brake lights oooer! :o

Is it an ex plod? If so they may have bypassed the shift solenoid and wired it into a since removed runlock.

No, this the high miler blue Elite, generally been a good car but just having a couple of probs at the moment. Will get the brake switch ordered for next week and get it booked in....torn rotator cuff says I won't be doing it though! ::)

.
Rotator cuff injury ugh ! Did mine about 4 years ago when we were in Cornwall lifting a water barrel so painful ,resorted to private physio in the end which helped immensely still get the odd twinge if I overdo it, all part of getting old I suppose .

Yeah, I've got arthritis in the same shoulder and neck.....it's a treat for anyone to witness me trying to get out from under a car....beached whale is a term commonly used, but getting under is aided by gravity which isn't so bad. Thinking of letting the three Omegas go, as I'm 76 next month and it's getting hard work, and I'm very drawn to the Kia Stinger to go Tesla hunting in ;)

Know the feeling very well , I changed the oil & filter in the Subaru about 18 months ago, when I eventually managed to get out from under it I swore that was the last time I'd get under any car. The Stinger seems a lot of car for a very reasonable price..👍
-
Im heading the same way, although Im not 65 until next month.
My head is still full of ideas about doing things to my cars but its getting harder to actually get out there and do them.
I made a determined effort to get under the Boxster to do a half hour job yesterday. It took over an hour and a half, and I felt like I had been hit by a train when I climbed back out.
Arthritis ( legs and back) and approaching old age are no fun. :(
-
Got under the back of the Vectra to have a squint at my repaired exhaust back box, seems ok ish. Wasn't too bad on the way down, but at 79, it's a farkin long way back up. ;D
-
I feel quite youthful at 62 after listening to all you old buggers! ;D ;D
-
Thanks for those comments, seems there's quite a few of us, but feeling the need to get under a car when it comes back from an MOT, with the dreaded advancing corrosion advisory seems to trigger the need to get in there go nosing around....maybe I can get one of those nursing home style hoists, and get SWMBO to lower me up and down as and when ::) :y
-
I would love to have a workshop with a two or four post lift. Im sure that would prolong my spannering by a few years at least.
Its never going to be a possibility though unfortunately.
-
Sounds good.....under floor heating and A/C, big screen TV, recliner, coffee and tea making, mini bar...not sure if there's anything missing OK, a minion or two to work on the cars, and then it's just another day in Paradise :)
-
Yep, that sounds like paradise to me. When I win the lottery................... ::) ;D
-
Join the queue !! If I do it will be a small bungalow with a large workshop!!
-
Or a big house with a small garage.
Convert the garage into a house and the house into a garage. ;D
