We are in France at the moment in Colmar for the Christmas markets.
Filled up with cheap diesel 1.30 litre before leaving Spain. Had to fill up again yesterday so found a supermarket. Only 1.75 30 euros more for a tankful! . Bargain as the prices on main roads and motorways are much higher.
Presumably due to high taxation. I am guessing your average Frenchman must pay less tax on other things. Certainly day to day food and drink seems to cost more than Spain and maybe Britain.
What do those of you regular travellers to France make of their cost of living?
-
We certainly found France expensive when we passed through earlier in the year.
Fuel especially you need to shop around for, and avoid motorway services, as you've found!

Well, you folks will insist on going to French France for reason completely beyond me. ??? :D

The roads actually have some tarmac left on them, for a start, and the drivers know what the overtaking lane is for... ::)

Not been since per-chinky sniffle, but fuel prices (petrol, diesel and LPG) were on a par with UK.

Seeing as most are 3 parts pissed after lunch, it's shocking how much better the French drivers are compared to the standard of driving we see here in Blighty.
I've never wrecked a wheel or tyre, or even had a puncture, in Euroland, so guessing the roads are better than the roads here. Lets face it, African roads are in better condition than ours....

Next time I go to Lagos you can come with and find out ;D

Agreed. Good lane discipline and folk get back in. Done nearly 3000 km so far and all were a joy apart from one day of very heavy rain. French roads are in good nick - maybe they actually use fuel duty to repair them.

Haven't driven in France for several years last time we were there I had a Renault 5 GT Turbo and it was a fantastic drive, I have a friend who goes over there regularly and he is always telling me how great the roads are compared to ours, which doesn't suprise me at all. The worst roads I have driven on in the UK are in Sussex.

I think its an urban myth these days that everything on the continent is cheaper. ::)
I was in Hungary in the summer and I was shocked at the cost of things. A basket of beers and snacks from Lidl was more expensive than I would pay at home! :o
It's Eastern Europe FFS. It's supposed to be cheap! ::) :(

As a rule of thumb, always pay in the local currency if given the choice as you use your card. That way you pay the official conversion rate as the transaction hits your account rather than whatever imaginary rate the retailers cars service provider chooses.

Am currently in French France - drove down to the Alps on Dec 7th. From memory, the Motorway price for proper Fuel was around 1.90 Euros. Off Motorway was IIRC 1.70 something (about £1.41). I think petrol was about £1.35 when we left the UK, so it does pay to fill up in the UK and then find the fuel off the Autoroutes - and most sections around larger cities are not payage, so no aggro getting on/off.
Traveling home on Thursday - hoping to get from Chambery/Lyon to the UK on a tank.
There are several websites giving the fuel prices of individual petrol stations in France - https://plein-moins-cher.fr/en/index.html

And thats why its quicker to do Calais to the south coast of France than it is to get from TB towers to Cornwall...

I paid cash in Hungarian Florints. I sat in the car, looked at the receipt, thought Fook me that seems expensive. Then did the conversion to Sterling, and thought Fook me that is expensive! :o
Two things about Hungarian Lidl.
1) Every one I went into was absolutely rammed. So I guess it's the cheapest supermarket in Hungary.
2) When you pay at the self service tills, you are confronted with a barrier on your way out. To open it, you have to scan your receipt. It's a good idea, but it flummoxed me momentarily! ;D

You and I probab;y paid for those roads, which is one reason why we cant afford to fix our own. ;D

1. Tecos Express in Budapest seemed reasonable, but they don't take Club Cards.
2. Sainsbugs started that here recently. Presumably to stop posh kids from stealing cheap Chardonnay...

Thats getting more and more common here as well. Trouble is, the till still asks if you want a receipt, if you answer No, you have to get help to escape.
No need to ask how I know that!
