It would appear that the Air Mass Sensor has suddenly failed on my 1995 2.5 V6 Omega Saloon. A diagnostic reading by the AA identified a fault with this sensor after the engine repeatedly stalled and drove with varying amounts of power and with the engine management light on after being left overnight in the cold. The AA disconnected the Mass Air Flow sensor and we were able to drive home with it in default mode.
I am able to replace the sensor myself but would like advice as to which to buy. The existing part is a Bosch 0 280 217 503 (OEM 90 510 156). After an extensive search, it would appear that the Bosch one is no longer available (out of stock wherever it is listed). I have been advised not to by a cheap third party one. Could someone please advise on the best make to go for. The prices seem to vary enormously from about £15 to over £400. I was thinking maybe Ridex?
I will take it out and examine it before fitting a new one but the instant and serious nature of the fault would suggest to me that it has failed rather than just got dirty.
Any advice welcome.

Assuming you haven't tried to clean the MAF with chemicals, or used an oiled filter, it's worth metering through the loom first, as the MAFs are fairly robust.

Ok, thanks. I will test the loom. I am a bit surprised it failed as I have read that the Bosch ones are very reliable. It has done 321,000 however. Not tried to clean it and the air filter is very clean.

It could also be a vacuum leak. Unmetered air will also cause the fueling to be off just as likely as a failing MAF.
All unplugging it does is revert the ECU to a presumed amount of air for any given throttle position. Generally it points to a failing MAF, but you might find that replacing it won't change anything.

I killed the MAF on a diseasal Astra I had using a de-greaser ::)
