Title: Bonnet support arms
Post by: Lizzie Zoom on 15 January 2025, 12:17:09
The bonnet support arms have developed the fault of not being able to hold up the bonnet when open after a few minutes.  The hydraulic strength of them has almost gone.

Are there new replacements on the market please? ???

Many thanks.

Replace in pairs always best idea. Generally f one is tired, other won’t be far behind.

The quick release clips can be fiddly if not done one before

If they're getting weak, the cold highlights it.

Some 3in1 on the clips a day or so before can help free them up along with a slim, flat screwdriver. Obviously try not to stab your, the windscreen or bodywork as you do them and change one side at a time.

Starting with weakest, and if the remaining strut is not strong enough, borrow a set of hands from passers by

Well, I may have put off replacing the HBV and cam cover gaskets due to my health and the soooo cold temperatures, but at least today I replaced the bonnet support arms as soon as they arrived from Autodoc! :D :D ;)

The arms I purchased are made by JP Group a/s of Denmark, part no. 1281202500, and are an exact, great quality, replacement for the originals.  Fitted within 20 minutes, so I feel happy now - onto the other two main jobs when I can! ;D :D :)

Trouble is I keep putting off the HBV renewal and cam cover gaskets work ::) ::)   Maybe the warmer weather will come along for me soon :D ;)

Ensuring the heater works is not a job to delay when it's the middle of winter ::) . HBV isn't a difficult or long job, unlike replacing the heater matrix.

When I bought new struts for my estate tailgate #-&^$% years ago, they were cheaper than the saloon ones! I suspect that's because they're a length that's usable in other general applications - they were aftermarket.

This sort of gas spring is so cheap it isn't worth not replacing them.

Assuming they are for your 2003 car, the Y****** on will be correct. :y

The difference for preand post facelift will be to allow for the differences between the two bootlids whereas ALL estates use the same struts because there's no difference between the tailgates.

I have an inkling that the FL bonnet struts are different to PFL/MFL ones as well, due to extra bonnet weight.

definitely different part numbers but I can't see they'd be that different  :-\

There's probably another 5 kg of weight, but it's right at the far end so there's a bit of leverage there.

The pre-facelift bonnet struts are 240N, the later ones are 290N
