Title: VOIP - Progs/Apps
Post by: Mr Skrunts on 15 January 2025, 23:55:07
I know a lot of members have family and friends abroad etc. :y

I used to use Skype a lot with out issues, used several programs since. :y

To night I have been chatting with a friend in the US and it keeps crapping out.  Tried FB messenger, tried Google chat (New one on me)  they both set off crystal clear then after a while sounds like submarine sonar kicks in and kills the call.

Any recomendations T.I.A.  :y

Second for WhatsApp. Spain was an early adopter. Most businesses use it there even for sending contracts, documents. The send my location feature is very handy.

We are staying at my late father’s house for four more days. On Tuesday night a wall socket “ caught fire” and shortly afterwards the main incoming fuse blew. None of the umpteen electricians we called used WhatsApp and dropped the call from a foreign number.

If you want integration to the phone networks, you are looking at something SIP.  All these stupid apps don't come close, though they do offer the advantage of video calls if that's important.

SIP can work with dedicated SIP handsets, or your existing landline handsets via an adapter, or via apps on mobile*. It does need a *GOOD* internet connection with stable latency.  Mobile broadband isn't up to the job, due to latency jitter.  It say if your internet is good for online Fraggin', its more than good enough for SIP.

As the phone providers in the UK shut down the PSTN in the next couple of years, your normal provider will automatically move you to SIP (but most will carry on charging you the same price).

I have been using SIP as my landline for probably the past 20 years, works will, and with the right provider, far, far cheaper than using the traditional phone companies. I pay 1p per minute to call my elderly relatives in Canada on their landlines.  My provider has no monthly charge, and I top up with a tenner about every 2 years...   ...must be billy no-mates ;D

*some apps need to be open on mobile to receive calls, and if not on a good wifi, suffer all the issues that mobile networks have with data streams.  Some apps hammer the phones battery, such as Zoiper (which is what I use when I go on hols)
