The reason this happens is that check-out staff are now personally liable for fines of about £2000 if they sell alcohol (or other age limited products like knives or 18 cert DVD's) to anyone underage or anyone that might be buying for someone underage.
If I was earning only £6.00 an hour working the tills for Tesco or any other supermarket I wouldn't risk a fine equivalent to 3/4 months wages just so my employers could make a few more pennies profit on some barbeque sauce.
They can't afford to use common sense if they have the slightest doubt they must refuse to serve.

Sorry .. that's rubbish ... a 2% alchohol sauce is NOT an alcohol drink .. are they going to stop selling hand cleaners next ???
They have screwed up and won't admit it, rather hide behind mumbo-jumbo than admit a mistake.
IMHO they should sack the till girl for stupidity.

We don't need a police force any more as tesco now seem to police the contry by deciding who is or is not fit to buy alcohol products even though they are over 18 years of age.
This type of thing is becoming increasinly common at Tesco stores. How can a check out girl make a judgement as to wether you are going to give alcohol to your children.........and if we do it has nothing to do with Tesco.
Tesco's only legal obligation is to not sell alcohol to persons under 18...nothing else.
Keep you f**king nose out of people's private lives Tesco. :-/ :-/ :-/
