Title: Trump tariffs
Post by: Varche on 02 February 2025, 09:11:16
Well , I take my hat off to him. He says what he is going to do and does it.

What impact will it all have for us in Europe? Increased prices and reduced spending ( reduced growth)? Yes , I know he hasn’t changed Europe/ US tariffs    yet.

The fentanyl angle is interesting. Mexico says their government isn’t supporting the trade ( my words). That seems reasonable . And that the US ought to be tackling the problem on the streets and organised criminal level rather than asking other countries to turn off the supply.

Maybe the whole thing is a bargaining chip to end the Ukraine war. Trump tells China to stop supplying the raw materials for fentanyl, gives them some concessions ( like reduced increased tariffs) and the Chinese tell Putin to desist. Win Win. Except fentanyl will just end up being replaced by a better, more addictive drug……….

You could argue for increased tariffs on Spain not doing enough to stem the horrific volumes of drugs coming ashore each day destined for the European market.

It could come very close to being an own goal. There's a lot of billions of dollars in trade between those countries and, although the treasury might take in a lot more, consumers could suffer badly.
He could give back the extra revenue in tax relief, but surely that would just put everyone back to where they were.

Starmer off to hobnob with the Eurocrats, Presidents and PM's in Brussels tomorrow, and he needs to be careful not to get us caught up in Trump's tariffs on the EU.

I expect he's going there all starry eyed though so I don't have any confidence....  ::)

Just seen a video on X (formerly Twitter) of the Governor of British Columbia, Canada telling the good people of BC, that he has directed liqueur stores and companies to only buy their stocks of American liqueur from blue states.  ::)

That'll teach Trumpy a lesson!  ;D

Pretty certain that all the stuff worth drinking comes from red states, so they're not going to be buying or selling much ;D

It's hilarious: let's vote for someone who'll introduce import tariffs so we can all pay more for stuff because we're morons! That will show them! Isn't it great???? ? ?   ?

The alternative was much worse. But at least the Americans turned up and voted decisively.

Trump has made no secret of what he was going to do and unusually for a politician, he's actually doing just that.

Unlike the utter shower we have in charge who would say literally anything to get elected and then proceed to do the exact opposite things because they think we're all morons.

Well to be fair, the 20% of the electorate that voted for them are complete and utter morons.  ;D

Soviet agent Trump seems to have suspended the tariffs on everyone but China for now. All gob, if you ask me.
Meanwhile the lunatic Musk has employed a bunch of juveniles to tear apart the USAID budget, sacking most of its employees at the same time. Nice work.

Trump is the playground bully. My dad is bigger ‘a you. My ball etc.  our generation has got used to gentlemanly negotiations behind closed doors and then a public announcement of the outcome.

I think his tactics are effective just as Putins are. No one called Putin when he annexed Crimea. He has jolted Mexico and Canada and Denmark into life to toe his party line. The EU meanwhile continues to function slowly behind closed doors ( just what exactly was agreed yesterday in terms of funding the defence shortfall they all , mostly, agree?)

Musk ?!  :o

Well... Mexico is sending 10,000 troops to their side of the border to beef up security and reportedly Canada will be announcing similar measures.  :-X

He's not a politician, and because of that, he's short on airs and graces.

But, he said 9 years ago what he was going to do, and by and large did it.

Why is everyone surprised, when, 9 years later, he's doing exactly what he has spent the last 18 months saying he would do?

Telling other countries that he's going to impose tariffs is the starteling point.

It's unusual that he starts with a sledgehammer and then comes back to a nutcracker, but if he's getting the results he wants, then who are we to judge the methods?

Suggestions are that Starmer has agreed to join the EU Defence Union. No formal announcements yet, but if it's true I wonder what that means for the operational independence of our Armed Forces.  ???

Nope, he’s done it and China has put plans to retaliate, most of what he says he does. He’s quite mad but better than what they had and the alternative, he is using the stick now but has the power to give the carrot too. God only knows what Musk is up to and how that’s going to turn out.

Well wokey Trudeau obviously didn't do enough and they'll have to and will do more.  :-X

I saw a video on X a couple of days ago of a Canadian Parliamentary Select Committee hearing where MP's were grilling the Chief Constable of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (Canada's federal police force) about the smuggling of fentanyl across the border to the USA. When asked how many people were involved, he didn't have a clue, but estimated that there were approximately 4000 gangs involved!  :o

I think Trumpy has a point and I don't blame him for getting tough with the neighbours if they don't take law enforcement seriously. I wish our useless, spineless, lawyerly, middle managerial technocrats would do the same.  ::)

Has Starmer actually got a backbone ?  He's simply a smarmy bastard with no idea of what to do to sort our problems out , probably the weakest PM the UK has ever had.

I watched an episode of 24 hours in police custody earlier in the week. Apparently, crystal meth is about to hit our shores in a big way, so we'll see what happens with that.
And, as for the RCMP, I don't think out NCA is much better.

And in Vancouver the gangs are all Chinese run. There are large stretches of the Canadian border that make crossing the Rio Grande look like swimming the Channel*.

*You can walk across much of the Rio Grande without getting your hair wet.

That's why he's pestering Denmark; he thinks the area he's after is already a golf course due to the name. The Viking's marketing campaign from over 1000 years ago is still working!

Meanwhile, our clowns are still talking about the two state solution, despite the fact that they have proved time over that they cannot and will not live peacefully side by side with Israel.  ::)

I read in the blurb about it the other day that it will house 9 million people in just one huge building. Fark that.

There's not enough water in the desert for toilets for 9 million people, so they might have to use composting toilets.  :)
