Picked my son up from the train station to take him for a dental appointment. On the way there is a steepish hill from a roundabout, the speed limit goes from 30 to 60 and everyone accelerates up the hill in a show of relief. I noticed the engine was revving higher than usual and didn't seem to want to change up. I pushed it into manual and the arrow on the dash was telling me to change up from 4th to 5th, but it wouldn't. Just revving away in 4th. Once we got back on the flat, it seemed to behave normally, it just felt like it was slipping going uphill.
I'm not prepared to spend money on a gearbox service, so do I footle around until I'm ready to buy something different or do I bite the bullet?
There is nothing decent, diesel and auto, around for around £10K, which is all I want to spend :(
-
So, to summarise, that's the front doors gone slightly pink, the infotainment screen gone blank, the timing chain noisy on startup, a damaged rear bumper and a slipping gearbox.
A Saturdays work for a keen enthusiast ::)

Does it need to be Euro6?

Does it need to be Euro6?
No, I don't go anywhere near congestion zones.

This sounds similar to the problem I had with the mighty Signum....except she would often get stuck in 2nd gear.
I neglected to tell the nice people at WBAC that it happened again on the way to them. I feel really bad about that. ::)

Petrol?
Electric?

Has it had the gearbox oil and filter changed at the service intervals or less?

It's been serviced in the old fashioned way. Engine oil and filter once every twelve months whether it needed it or not.

I have no doubt the engine would be good for another 50,000 miles, it's just the bits attached to it that are facked

Why not another astra/insignia, being as you seemed to get on fine with what you have, before it went sad that is.
Something like this - I like the colour....

Reap what I sow? It's a nine year old astra that has never let me down. I paid £10K for it in 2018 on 9000 miles and its now done 84,000 miles. I think I've done rather well out of it.
-

No, I don't go anywhere near congestion zones.
In that case £10k budget should buy you a pretty decent car if you avoid the whole new cars are better corporate marketing wank.
-
It could just have been doing a DPF regen at the time

It could just have been doing a DPF regen at the time
I know when my cars are doing a regen, Mark. My astra J used to idle at around 900rpm instead of 750 and the engine tone changed. On this one, astra K, it sounds as if there's a hole in the exhaust at low revs and, again, the engine tone changes.

I've had my ML for 40-odd thousand miles & nearly 6 years and have yet to notice it doing a regen .... not saying it's never done so, but I've yet to notice! :-\

I would question the sense in buying a dpf/adblue equipped diesel unless you need it for ULEZ purposes.
Especially when you can buy a nice Astra estate for peanuts.

Thanks, Al, but I want a reliable diesel auto. Not a 17 year old petrol manual.

Regardless of what anyone else thinks about value for money, it fits the brief, is in budget and is clearly the kind of thing Ste likes as he's had similar before.
Also, I think a lot of people need to take another look at how much cars actually cost these days. I did a search for 7yr old estate cars, up to 50k miles, 1.8l minimum, auto, (cleared out the dacias and skoda fabias that really arent estate cars), not written off. The cheapest thing that came back were passats and leons at £12-13k. Like everything else, cars just cost a shed load more than they did a few years ago. When an astra estate with a poxy 1.2l engine is £25k+ new, they're bound to cost a fair bit second hand.
Its totally mad, but its the reality we now live in.
-
Yep. I paid £10.5K for this astra when it was 18 months old with 9K miles. That was in 2018, before the world went mad.

Yep.
It will be a cold day in hell before I pay £9000 for a decade old Insignia.
Have you considered a derv BMW. I've seen a few priced from around £10,000 for a 2018 car.

Given the demographics that those cars are aimed at the test driver was more likely to be Brenda from Bristol than The Stig! ;D
Edit: Parkers reckon it'll do 0-60mph in 10.6 seconds. :y Maybe they had the The Stig! :)

It doesn't need to be newer then, especially if you want reliable diesel auto.
Peoples obsession with newer car reliability is seriously misplaced.
-
Definitely, newer cars are mostly more complicated more trouble harder to fix. I’d look for something around. 2010 2014 myself even if it goes tits up then you can scrap it if it’s too bad and buy another

It ticks all the boxes. I nearly went with a '60 plate E250 in Wakefield for £2.5k but it has dpf issues which misses the point.
Thing is there's plenty of options available for sensible money. No point spending £££ on another shit box that's going to be worth 75p in a years time.

Like you Steve I don't intend spending a fortune when I eventually change the Range Rover, I'm seriously considering a Japanese import ideally a Subaru estate of some description a dealership not far from me imports a few all low mileage & in fantastic condition due to the strict "shaken" inspection the Japanese equivalent of our MOT and the fact no salt is used on their roads. I looked at one a few weeks ago one owner 24,000 miles and like new condition for £8999 , but at the moment I don't want to part with the Range Rover as it running great .

I've looked at Japanese imports as well, but importing it myself rather than buying from a UK dealer.
There are some great low milage cars at great prices, but I'm not sure I'm brave enough to be honest... :-\ ;D

Seems like the best option to me , my vehicle is the workhorse for carrying the dog towing the caravan etc. so nothing too good the Subaru I viewed was a 2009 but honestly was like a new car , I don't think I'd want to import it myself either, I certainly don't want to spend £20-£30,000 on a vehicle that would cover 7,000 miles a year maximum. We've had two Subaru Foresters and they are superb vehicles never had any problems with them at all, they're not economical on fuel but not a problem to us, only covering a small amount of miles.

I have a cunning plan ;D
Wifey likes to have a newish (say, 3 year old) car every few years. She will have had her grandland, on a 21 plate, 2 years in June. If I can get another year out of mine, I'll inherit her cast off, again, when it's about 5/6 years old,and she will get another car.
I didn't really want to do this, because we paid £21500 for hers, and I thought that was a bit much for a mobile dog kennel. But, looking at auto trader, she would only get £13,500 by chopping it in right now, so that will probably be down to £11K or even £10K by then. This is on a car that's only done 16,000 miles right now.
So, in my mind, I'd be getting a £10K car, which is about what I want to pay. Mine can be scrapped, it's had its time.
-
First thing I'd do is get the fickin adblue coded out, it's a pain when the temperature drops.
-
The market is overdue a decent readjustment. What you paid for it two years ago would have been too much and the trade prices now reflect that.
Also cars that are only 8 to 10 years old are considered to be more reliable than modern cars, so their values are holding, yet dealers are only offering a pittance for them to try and claw back some of their losses tied up in overpriced new stock.
They desperately need to shift the overpriced new stuff and they only way to do that is to convince people that their perfectly decent slightly older car is utterly worthless.
-

not had a problem with my ML Bluetec ..... (he says touching wood :-X)

My Adblue has generally come from Costco
Newer cars will tell you how much is in the tank but mine will apparently just tell you when you're at the 500 miles to go .... I just put a container full in every now & then but have never had the warning

No issues with the pigs piss in hers either, once I can actually get some delivered from the usual ebay arseholes.
My Adblue has generally come from Costco
Newer cars will tell you how much is in the tank but mine will apparently just tell you when you're at the 500 miles to go .... I just put a container full in every now & then but have never had the warning
Costco are way too expensive, it was something like £10 by the time VAT went on for 5l. Even ShitFix/Toolstation is only £16 for 10l.
Her car doesn't even give a countdown, it says it's low, then you have a predetermined, but unspecified, number of starts before it refuses to start. The next model year did have a countdown, and tells you via the app as well.
Also, the size of the tank is compromised on her very specific trim model to get weight down, to get it in the £0 VED category, so the bloody think holds a max of 9l. So we chuck 5l in at a time, and just get used to doing it every 2 or 3 months depending on miileage/journey style.
We also keep the Ad blue in the utiiity room, as it doesn't like being stored incorrectly. Hence I wouldn't use from a petrol station shop where its left outside to freeze, and often in direct sunlight.
-
Wife's grandland just says 'Starting impossible in 1750 miles' all the time, guess that means it's ok. Then it counts down 'Starting impossible in 1500 miles, 1250 miles, etc.
When the outside temperature drops below freezing for a couple of days, it starts the countdown whether it's full or not, and reports a fault. As soon as it warms up a bit, it goes back to 1750 and the fault light goes out.

It could be that it's a bit low and the cold affects the volume enough to upset it. Might be worth topping it up... :-\

Tried that, makes no difference. It's obvious a common problem, when Mo mentioned it to a couple of (male) people at work, they just said 'That'll be cause it's cold'
She only does about 150 miles a week, so it would have to stay very cold for an extended period of time for it to get to zero. That's not gonna happen, what with global warming an all.

Suspect more likely badly stored pigs piss from a garage, so it would have degraded badly.

Within a week or so you'll be posting an advert for another dreary derv estate.
Then you'll calm down a bit......then a week later you'll become bored and post another Autotrader advert. >:D ::) ::) :)

At least I won't ask you to guess the price of each car I post up ;D

Anyway....told you.....I'm not thinking about it any more. No, sir ;D

And why don’t you trade the Astra in for the new car the mrs is having better than scrapping it👍

Just seen on the telly, that Welsh git Michael Sheen is giving a million pounds away. Maybe he'll buy me a car, if I ask very nicely :-*

I was reading about that. He has actually bought 1 million pounds worth of debt for £100k, which in itself is very laudable. It seems that the Debt recovery firms who buy the debts from the banks or other sources try to get as much as they can from the debtor. The longer this goes on them not receiving any settlement, they over a period of time offer lower and lower settlement figures until they either give up or let the debt be paid off for figure of around the 10% of the original debt. Wonder how much they initially buy the debt for in the first place. :-\

Pennies on the pound. They won't be losing out.

There is nothing decent, diesel and auto, around for around £10K, which is all I want to spend :(
Gearbox is electric/electronic fault. My old astra had similar, but different.

How do you know? Have you read the codes? ???
Turn it off and on again. That should sort it! :y ;D

Nope, no decent diesel auto estates for less than £10k. Zero, nada, zip... >:D

My old astra used to hold on to the gears for too long first thing in the morning, no matter what the out side temperature. Drive a mile, off and on, sorted.
This one won't change up, even manually. Switch off and on, sorted.

Dear me ;D

Anyway, I've fixed mine now :)
-
If it sorts itself out when you stop and turn it off, and on again. Try disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes or so, that can sometimes clear electrical gremlins out. :)

I'd have to borrow a spanner. ;D

I just found my dream car... Search for yours https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202502209296164?advertising-location=at_cars&atmobcid=soc5&body-type=Estate&fromsra&fuel-type=Diesel&price-to=5000&radius=40&searchId=8a98e8e1-23b8-4f34-8b42-369253957da0&sort=price-asc&transmission=Automatic
From the MoT history this one would be a pretty safe bet as well.

Mine had 190,000 miles on it when I sold it, but it was great. Kinda wish I hadn't got rid now. :-\
I'll need to find a replacement for the Mondeo soonish. I want a big estate and another V70 is definitely high on the list. :y
Or maybe an XC70. :)

Besides it will probably out live your Astra.

XC 70 has handbrake issues and cables are a bar steward to renew on older model.

I think I may have over egged the state of my Astra's paintwork. The front doors are 'pinkish', not 'falling off'. It's a bit mucky right now, but you can probably see what I mean

And, as for outliving my astra....no. I haven't spent a penny on it.....ever, so it's in need of a bit of tlc.
I could buy a car for a few grand, spend thousands on it, and lose money when I come to sell it. But I don't think I'll bother ;D
-
Basically you're looking for an excuse to get rid of it.
My point is that you really don't need to spend £10k to do so unless you want to. And actually £10k can buy a significantly more interesting car should you want it.

Yes, I am. Sometimes.
Because I am under the impression that, for more money than my car is worth, I will get more car. But that's not necessarily true.

Yeah. Subjective, innit?

Newer isn't more because it's a constantly diminishing measure.
And more expensive doesn't mean anything either, either in terms of maintenance, running costs or purchase price.
You could buy a 3 year old Astra for £10k and spend nothing on it for the next three years and have it be worth £2k then, a net loss of £8k...
Or... You could buy a £1.5k car with a fresh MoT every year and spend nothing on it. After the same 3 years, you would be £3.5k ahead of the Astra. You would actually be much further ahead because you would only replace the car if it required spending on, so it could potentially last the full 3 years. ;)
