Title: Help in Bleeding Astra J Brakes after Rear Caliber Change
Post by: polilara on 05 March 2025, 18:01:41
So I replaced Astra J rear caliber due to handbrake issue. Handbrake is now Ok but I could not bleed brakes properly as I was alone in garage. I clamped the caliper rubber hose during the work and and after installation just pressed slowly the pedal twice to floor and slowly up to get fluid out from bleed screw. After closed the screw I pumped piston tight to pads and went for test drive. Brakes work but pedal is soft. I have never done bleeding to avs system. Can it be done in traditional way with help of another person or do I need special tools. Please help.

If you've got air back to the ABS block your going to need something to run the abs pump to purge it.

Ok, thanks DG. I am not sure whether air went up there. After having conncted the hose to caliper I opened air screw and removed clamping from hose. So how to proceed now?

Make sure the reservoir is at the max mark, then with an assistant start at the furthest wheel from the abs unit and work your way around to the nearest one.

Keep the reservoir topped up never allowing it to get below minimum. If that doesn't do it, pop it into a garage for a brake fluid change. Most dealers offer it as a fixed price job.

Yes to both.

Pedal down and hold.
Open bleed screw.
Close bleed screw.
Release pedal.

Repeat at each wheel until bubble free clean fluid flows out. Then move onto the next one.

If you have an Eze Bleed kit, use the bottle and hose at the caliper to prevent air getting back in and minimising the mess. :y

And if you can’t find an assistant, borrow/buy an EEZIBLEED Kit and do it on your own. You pressurise the system so there’s no need for another person to operate the pedal.  :y

I've got this https://www.halfords.com/tools/hand-tools/automotive-tools/europat-vizibleed-brake-and-clutch-bleeding-kit-321141.html?istCompanyId=b8708c57-7a02-4cf6-b2c0-dc36b54a327e&istFeedId=367c5610-f937-4c81-8609-f84582324cd6&istItemId=xxwmax&istBid=t&&_$ja=tsid:%7Ccid:17363835999%7Cagid:%7Ctid:%7Ccrid:%7Cnw:x%7Crnd:3993948498277538863%7Cdvc:m%7Cadp:%7Cmt:%7Cloc:1006818&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAiaC-BhBEEiwAjY99qHZjSZM6yyF6nw5hLvEARTT48hwSJ4FulSRGUVGJCEyAhqRAZdqDDBoC0rIQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

The one that uses the air pressure from a tyre I found very messy,,, if you have a compressor the vacuum bleeds are very good.

It can get very messy if you don't drop the pressure in the tyre .... ask me how I know!  ::)

 IIRC they suggest around 15psi

Thanks for all tips and comments. As said I continue today after work and also check what kind of one-man equipment I can find here.

There's a few options on Amazon etc, but essentially all you need is half a metre of suitable clear hose that fits onto the nipple and a glass jar with some brake fluid in it to submerge tother end of the pipe and someone to press the pedal.

Worst case you can wedge the pedal down with a suitable something against the front of the seat, but it will be ALOT of up and down for you. ;)

This the way I've done it single handed.

A length of clear plastic hose, a coke bottle with brake fluid in it and a length of wood to wedge the pedal down.

Open the nipple, nip round and press the pedal down and hold it down with the wood. Go back and close the nipple, and nip back to release the pedal and then go back and open the nipple.... Repeat until there are no more bubbles in the hose, and don't forget to keep the reservoir topped up.

It's a big faff though and a lot of tooing and froing ....  ::)

The one man(can I still say that?) I bought recently has a 3 litre capacity bottle that you pressurise to the desired amount by a plunger ( much like a garden sprayer) so no need to use spare tyre or anything plus a 1 litre bottle with a chain and hook to hang it on something convenient to catch the expelled fluid.

From what you say, I doubt you have air in the ABS module, so normal bleeding should get the air out - be that 2 person job, or Eezibleed type options.

If you do get air in the ABS, marque specific (or high end garage type) diags tools will be needed to run the return pump to get the air out of the ABS block.

So,  now I have brakes again, thanks for OOF for all help.  Used conventional method with help of my wife. Found this
From Biltema, perhaps I buy it later, adapter fits to Astra. Remember that Bullworker was used in 70' s for one man solution. It was put between steering wheel and brake pedal.  https://www.biltema.fi/autoilu---mp/autotyokalut/jarrutyokalut/jarrujen-ilmauslaitteet/jarrujen-ilmauslaite-manuaalinen-2000044343
