 Whats his hibernation routine ?

A tortoise has the same intellectual capacity as a retarded goldfish, so probably has little idea about it's environment. ::)

Normally mum feeds him up and he'll go down around Nov, and wake up late Feb/Early Mar.  This time of year, he'll go in her (massive, 4 bay) garage at night due to frosts.

This year, he's not been eating ready for hibernation, and has already started hibernating, hence she thinks he won't wake up this time :(.  That's also why his outdoor mansion has been put away, as he's not coming out again this year...   ...possibly ever.

She lost her cat earlier this year as well, so not been a great year for mum and her pets.

He needs it.  When we were in Aylesbury, he was always digging under the fences and wandering off in search for the ladies to go shag. After building up the strength by munching through dad's vegetable patch first!

Don't underestimate their intelligence.  Or at least the desire to go looking for shagging opportunities.

Ours has also been showing signs of wanting to hibernate, which it has never done in the previous five years.
Its digging down as deep as it can late afternoon and not waking up until late morning.
A few big terribly sorry old boy, I am a little tireds, a nibble on its food, and it sits around doing nothing much and then digs down for an 18 hour sleep again.
I wonder if the internal Barometer tells them its going to be a cold hard winter ?
My Arthritis is certainly letting me know the weather is going to get colder.
Soon be time to gets its fridge set up ready for the long sleep.
Come next spring it will be chasing me around the garden again, trying to shag my Crocs.  ;D
