Feeling totally-gutted at the moment; my 1983 Series III Landy`s gearbox has failed......well, by that I mean the reverse gear has begun grinding and slipping out of engagement (not good!)....this failure isn`t entirely a surprise as the reverse gear has been 'growling-loudly' for a considerable time now. :'(
Any OOF Landy owners (former or current) have any advice or suggestions for a budget DIY removal/rebuild of the gearbox: is it likely to be a 'do-able' home repair...or would a S/H, scrapyard or eBay sourced 'box' be a reasonable gamble for a woman on a very tight budget? :-/

there is a landy owners club website Debs,dunno if you could get info/advice from there. :-/

As my mate who is a Landy nut reckons the only thing you need to fix a "proper" landy is a good blacksmith, it is probably repairable by someone as technically capable as you are.
As said .. I'm sure the Landy forums will give the best advice

Do you know which box it is Debs?
I am guessing its one of the older jobs LT77 derivatives and not the later R380.
If so, they are pretty easy to work on and I have used this lot in the past for re-build kits.

... or is it pre-LT? Series, or Defender, Debs? Think yours is a Series from what i remember..

I`ll be having a look-see under the Landy tomorrow....I was hoping it would 'just' be a worn gear or bearing that a DIY ("Deb-it-yourself") rebuild might cure.
It`s a 25 year-old diesel SWB Series III so I`m not at all sure which gearbox it actually has. :-/

Funny noises are usually bearings; jumping out of gear is worn selector forks or worn bearings...guess what i think in might be ;)

My daughter friend has just blown the engine on his Landy Series 3 and can't afford to repair it. Its just laid up and is talking of scrapping it. I will ask him if he is willing to let it go for spares. If you are intrested

Lol, shows how I only ever worked on the V8 ones, is it the old 4 speed then?
These are bog basic!
Usual culprits are worn dogs (syncros dont cause gears to jump out plus not fitted to reverse on these unlike the Omega) or detent springs
Sounds like wornm dogs

You will have no problems in sorting, might be better to change the gearbox, if yu can find one second hand. Good Luck. :y

Unlikely to be quite so catastropic and still move under its own steam....

I do have one very important bit of advice though Debs... Be very careful when removing the box... They're really heavy! :y :y ::)

Funnily enough, I always though of them as quite light!
Not to bad to remove as you can do most of the work from inside!

Funnily enough, I always though of them as quite light!
Not to bad to remove as you can do most of the work from inside!
Could be because I was working on a newer V8. And it was in the air and we foolishly removed the gearbox+transfer box in one piece ::) ::)
