Just heard the news today that HBOS (halifax building society, RBS) have lost 56^ off thier share value alone tis week and Llydds TSB are is talks to take them over.
I opened my first account with the Halifax when I was 13/14 and am 48 next
Crazy, wonder what we will wake upto next week

Very worrying
esp for me :(
-
shares were over 11 quid less than 18 months ago, they were about 1.50 today. :o

Normally two giant banks like these would not be allowed to merge because it would restrict competition.
But I think a blind eye will be turned in this instance. :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/

Thankfully I changed my mortgage a few months ago now fixed for 5 years, but I notice my credit card companies keep reducing my limit, most recently being today BOS reduced my card by £300, so rather than pay off before going abroad I may just continue to pay the minimun and keep the money in the bank ::) :y :-/
-
My savings and income are with Halifax and my bills are paid via Llyods TSb in my cheque account and kept with a bare minimum balance and to my annoyance their manipulated bank charges.
If the TSB takes over the Halifax methinks I will drop them both.
Down side is, where do you move to. :-/

Nationwide Building Society (it's not a Bank)

Your savings will be safe
Your house will be safe
What of the workers :'(
-
Today I searched in the net for some info as I have my lessons from before..
Briefly the banks who is mostly in liquid position or have many papers from different sectors will be effected slightly..
But some who have large paper investments to related sectors (mortgage) will be inevitably effected..
However Lechman Brothers who have given positive credit rating for Turkey and who said "everything goes fine" is now bankrupt :P

Allready been mentioned mortgage rates to rise and savings rates to fall.
My mortgage is history as it's settled but I cant keep track with savings rates. Best I have seen recently is Yorkshire Building Society.@ 5.7% where the Halifax has allready droped to 4.25% (Both Gross%)

Not likely. Banks will be desperate for YOUR cash. They will be tripping over each other to get your cash on deposit. I fully expect to see interest rates on deposit to rise. :)

Birmingham Midshires 6.52% and Bradford and Bingley 6.51%. Both instant access accounts but you have to bank on the interweb thingy. :y

Awaiting the advice of my IFA on where to invest my retirement lump-sum ...he phoned to say that all last weeks work is now irrelevant and he'll need to start again once things settle down. Looks like we'll stick it in an instant access account short term.
One good-ish thing ... the decision on the pension annuity we did two weeks ago was timely ... seems annuity rates have dropped big time this week .. the rate is fixed and they can't wiggle out of it .. :)

Umm. My mortgage (Halifax ::)) reaches the end of its tracker period in a month or so. :-/

Now I'm suffering real confusion at the moment. i've recently re-mortgaged and sorted all my finances. This involved securing some combined (unsecured) debts of around £12k! It was an informed decision and has made a huge difference to the quality of our life. Basically we went from paying just over the minimum on our cards to closing 2 accounts and using just 1 for everything, paying it in full every month. What I find amazing is that this card company have just increased my limit by £2000! Now I don't plan to use it but is that really responsible lending? :o :o :o

Credit card companies just love dangling the carrot to see who will bite. >:(

exactly ...one of my visa's bank increased the limit to 10 times my salary.. :o
if I follow them soon I'll go bankrupt and swimming in debits :(
-
Yes Barclaycard just gave me another £500 on my limit wont spend it though! 14.9% interest so no thanks!!!!!!!
I will have to move my current account as i Fought the Lloyds & The LLoyds Lost so they closed my account so i moved to the Halifax nevermind are Barclays a good bank in general??????

I have been with them since the 1980's and they haven't pi$$ed me off. I think that's about as much praise as a bank will ever get, certainly from me. Bu663r all interest on their current account. 0.1% or something. At that rate I'd rather get none so I don't have to bother to declare the pennies I do get!
One thing that has annoyed me recently is that their online banking now requires a PIN gadget to log in, and again to validate payments. This is a pain in the butt because if I'm travelling I've invariably forgotten to take the PIN pad with me, or the card, or both, and I can't log in to my online banking.

I'M RICH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D :D
Just checked the bank statement and my retirement "lump sum" has been paid in ... looks really, really nice ... now how much was that SL63 ...... http://www.mercedes-amg.com/SL63 ? :)
Unfortunately this has to go into a monthly paying high-as-possible interest account or some such income vehicle ... :( so just need my IFA to advise me where to put it ..
Still one can dream for a few moments .....

I had a similar moment once during a house move. The phrase "You can sleep in your car but you can't race your house" did cross my mind. ::)
Cue loads of cold calls from your bank asking you if you're interested in savings accounts, investments, etc.. >:(

As long as you don't go to them asking for help IF the worst were to happen. I'm currently waiting for the whole Bank Charges case to be resolved as I have a £k claim in against Barclays. That amount all spiralled from an error on my part one month which put me £250 overdrawn. Asked them to increase OD Limit temporarily and reduce monthly for 5 months and they refused... Outcome was £2k worth of charges over the course of 18 months!
From my experience Alliance and Leicester are good... They're run by real people and not just computers! :y :y

I have been a Lloyds customer since the late 80's, yes their customer service is nowhere near as good as it was and their products are not as competitive, but they are consistent
I have my business account with them as well, they have tried in the past to push borrowing onto me and i have had to politely tell them to go away in short sharp jerky movements, but on the whole they are reliable.....
When you look at the financial markets the insititutions that are suffering now are those who either perpetuated the sub prime market or were heavily involved, the problem child is now biting back.....and with a vengence.....
Those institutions who offered 'boring' products, like Lloyds are now in a position to benefit from other downfall, they wanted to buy Northern Rock but were blocked by the government, this time Gordon and his cohorts have allowed it as it MAY bring some market stability, however i believe that there may come a point where Lloyds are advised that they need to 'offload' some of the group.
short term it is a good thing, yes some staff will suffer, and this is a sad point of take overs, but would it not be better to lose a few thousand jobs that have a whole group dive and everyone lose out.....ideally if redeployment could take place then this could be avoided.....
strange times are ahead.....here's hoping that everyone comes out of this smiling

40000 has been quoted (hbos current : 72000, ltsb : 70000)
but it wont be anywhere near that.
I am slightly biased being one of the 72000, but backroom staff, nothing at all to do with finance, so not overly worried for the next few years

barclays and me dont suit each other. had to close current account and move in end, as i couldn't ever access my money due to their errors. I have a long standing 5yr despute with barclaycard as well over ordering items the day a company went bust, and they are asking me to prove the items didn't get delivered, something I have been unable to do...
