Thats a classic, my dad had one.
-
They are gorgeous..
Not as gorgeous though as your Avatar that I am drooling over :D
-
:-*
That does look rather nice. And it'd be so much fun on a wet roundabout. ;)
It'll be less economcal than an MV6 with a tuned crossflow on 40DCOEs too. ;D

Bloke who lives opposite me has a mk1 rs2000 rally car, looks and sounds lovely,he did have a metro 6r4 until he went the classic route.
his next door neighbour has a mk1 lotus cortina which he uses for classic racing. I am not at all jealous. ;)

Now there is another awesome car, over the years I do think Ford have done some beauties :y

Lol, it always makes me chuckle when we reminisce about 'old' cars.
Bitter experience is that when you actually get in one and drive it again......you realise they are pretty Shite compared to the 30 years newer ones we have grown used to.
-
I had one of them lovely motors.
-
Maybe just the looks then.....
look at Stephanie Beacham she is 61... and dont tell me you wouldn't ::)
-
I passed my driving test in a Mk I Escort ..... I'm that old!! ;)

-

.. complain that she didn't go as well as she used to 30 years ago? ;D
'tis true, in standard form. However, the MK1/2 Escrot is about as tuneable as you could wish for. I reckon it could be developed into something fun.

I think the handling (steer it on the throttle) of cars like the old escorts etc: at relatively sensible speeds was (and still would be)one of lifes great joys. :)
-
I passed my driving test in a Mk I Escort ..... I'm that old!! ;)
I passed mine in one of these, in 1968 ....... :(
http://www.motorbase.com/vehicle/by-id/295
and the first car I owned was the saloon version of these ..
http://www.motorbase.com/vehicle/by-id/1072
918 cc side valve engine .. 28 BHP !!!
-
Bazil "Entwood" Fawlty ;D ;D ;D
-
Lol, it shows the different eras we grew up in, my memory of Mk1 and Mk2 escorts are that of boat like rot boxes which drank fuel, smoked and rotted out fast.....
-
Yeap definately old ;D but far more classy car than i passed in.. a Micra ;D ;D

Passed my test in a Sunbeam Talbot Horizon (French Crap!!) and me 1st car was a G reg Austin Maxi 1500 ,which had a great big hole in passenger side floorpan, lasted me all of 3 months , Scrapped it when cables in gear box snapped and brought a mk3 1600 gxl cortina . Oh happy days :) :)
-
My earliest recollection of cars were the continual stream of knacker-ed a-series (crock of shite engine that was retired 20 years to late) equipped cars dad would work on, some triumphs........garage re-sprays, engine out timing chain swaps on Renault 5's.
I recall him working for Renault when the Fuego came out....he demonstrated that even on a brand new that you could get it to do weird things by turning a few to many electrical items on at once!
-

I had a Belmont GLSi 1.8. No idea why I bought it, as I hated it before I bought it, but still got it for some daft reason. Ragged the tits off it, had 140mph on the clock once, admittedly downhill. Shagged the engine due to slamming it in 1st instead of 3rd one day (the box in that particular one was even crappier than the standard crappy astra box). Replacement engine didn't have the same go in it, so sold it within 3 months and got a Mk2 GTE.

Were they not to be Renaults version of the 924? ::)
-

They often ran....but the doors wouldn't lock/unlock, windows would not work, dash did weird things etc etc etc terrible electrics.....fortunately they were very bio-degradeable!

I had a white 2 litre laser (known as the shed), took out the spare wheel and poured 2 yards of concrete in the boot, very hard to get sideways then. Until the tyre well rotted and dropped off leaving the concrete exposed!
EDIT: Always called them CRAPI for some odd reason :P

I have a dislike of Fords (even worse than my dislike of Vauxhall/Opel!) based on the fact I invariably crash them ::)
-
The Avenger was (imo) an under rated alternative to the escort.had 2 of them, they ciuld be made to go/handle quite well with a bit of work.
3 litre Capri imo was a very over rated car.not that quick and handled like a barge.
-
Saw the light after the capri brought me 1 st VX a cav coupe 1900 (wanabee manta )
-
I must admit I liked the Granada's, remember my Dad's mate having one, it seemed so comfy and spacious. But didn't like the Scorpio one really :-[

Reality is that there were some limitations in those years in my country..
These were very rare and was nearly a 5 home price compared to today.

Was an ex van for the company I worked for. Got a good deal as my Dad was the transport manager, he thought it would be a nice safe little runabout.
Didnt take long before it was taking bends on 2 wheels as it wouldnt slide the back end.. lol

Yes they are rubber wings and the drivers side of the split windscreen is hinged at the top and open as a vent. I wish it was mine! It's owned by Robin Beardmore a good friend from the Minor world. Have a google for the Beardmore brother to see some of their other cars.

there were 4 different 1600s!

Single carb - 1.5" Stromberg?
AFAIR they were mid 60s in bhp the bigger carb or twin Strombergs were 75 and the GT I think was just over 90
-
not forgetting the Tiger :y
which iirc had webers
-

My mum had a good estate and I owned a hatch variant.
Handling was fantastic, especially with wider tyres and forest springs

I raced a 2.0 Capri with a 1.6 Avenger estate and it was a draw, my dad beat an XR3i with the same car

As I had no money I bought a S/H pair for my Sunbeam - still got over 90bhp at the wheels with them, rebuiilt them a few times to get them right. THe needles have been changed and filed to get the right mixture and £20 cash in hand for the rolling road owner!
-

I know there was a 1600 (Sunbeam Ti had same engine) but not sure if there was a 1500

spax adjustables on the rear/strengthened lower arms/uprated konis at the front -stuck like $h1t to a blanket, and very controllable/predictable when grip was exceeded. :y

yeah, pretty sure the Tigers were all 1600. Ialmost bought a Sunbeam ti, but came across a 6 month old HS and had that instead.
Maybe we will have to form the OAOF (old avengers owners forum) ;D ;D
-
Forest springs standard height but a lot stiffer, Leda front struts, 2" bore rally exhaust, Kent FR3 cam, twin Strombergs (rolling road set up) K&N filters, first rebore, 60thou head skim, slight porting, 3.54 or 3.7 axle (I blew the 3.54), close ratio Avenger 1500 gearbox, GLS rear screen, GLS door pockets and door trims, refitted with rev counter clocks
Did about 50,000 miles in it

That was it, then I kept it for three years not sure what to do, then it was trailered to work and was to be converted to grass track, then the building owners let that section out, and it was moved somewhere in Inkberrow and I lost it :'( :'( :'( :'(

There was a Hillman Avenger Tiger 1498cc 100mph.

Nope;

[View Picture Gallery]An all new model from Chrysler owned Hillman made its debut in 1970, the Hillman Avenger. The Avenger was a mid-size family saloon aimed directly at the Morris Marina, Ford Escort and Vauxhall Viva, all of which were relatively new models of a similar size. As well as the usual "standard" models of the Avenger range two sporting variants, the competition bred Tiger model and an even rarer BRM version were also made available in small numbers.
The Avenger Tiger was conceived as an ideal platform for both saloon car racing and rallying which could be ordered direct from the factory as a road car. The Tiger used the four door bodyshell of the standard Avenger and was powered by a tuned 1498cc engine featuring twin-Weber carbs. Some Tigers were also supplied with 1.8 litre and 2.0 litre units, although these were true competition cars.
I did not know that till tonight ::)

I agree, but yours is a new one, ::) not an old 'Metal' interior one, they are a bit different, I discoverd that 4 years ago when I bought a ford 107E, fond memories but forgot what they are really like ::) Would still have a 60' or 70's sporting Ford if I had the money, or a Mini :y
-
Passed my test 1974 in my old man's Mazda RX2 . Anyone remember them? Went like stink , guzzled petrol , let go on corners even in the dry on rock hard Bridgstone tyres. First car of my own was a mini 850 , little bit slower ! BTW going back to original thread doesn't 12 grand reserve seem a bit steep , not sure you couldn't get an original one or even maybe a lotus cortina for that money in the present economic climate ?
-
Going back to the OP... my friend Markie has a Mark 1 1972 Escort.
He paid not much more than £50 for a rusty shell and a big box of bits... and through sensible money he now has it restored, sprayed and rebuilt... it is worth more sentimentally than any Omega, despite how much I wind him up over it :D
It's also the old 1300 pushrod engine - which we share a passion for :y

my old man had one of those, chewed rotor tips like no ones business
My first car was a mini, loved it, and i have about another 10 after that........at the time XR3's were still new, RS turbo Escorts were revered as hot hatches as was the ubiquitous Golf GTI Mk1
Astra GTE were a bit to 'jelly mould for me, Cav SRi's were the most stolen cars in their time, Monza GS\E's were a better, more subtle alternative to the Capri ( i had a 3.0s and 2.8 injection) we used t called them 'speedboats' due to their nose up attitude
and Porsche 924 were still considered 'respectable' especially the turbo version with 170 bhp ;) and the 911 was...and still is my dream car, the Lamborghini Countach adorned my bedroom wall as did the tennis girl who was scratching her arse :P
-
Yeah , we blew
the rotor tips as well . We were fitting new points and rocking the car back and forth to set the timing /gap . what we didn't know is if you turn the engine backwards it blitzes the tips . Iirc car cost 2K new , replacement engine was about 800 , dad got about 700 trade in after 2 years for a saab.. Probably the equivalent of blowing about 15k in 2 years on a car in todays money , expensive motoring!1
I had that poster too . Some of the tennis players actually look like that now , in those days it was Billie Jean King or Anne Jones , not sure you'd want either of them showing you their bum !
