Title: Change your air filters!
Post by: JonArgraig on 21 September 2008, 15:24:16
I changed mine last about 4 months ago (6000 miles or so) but the car was feeling a little held back, and the MPG was dropping at tad so took a drive to Bangor (avg 30.7 mpg) and bought a new fram air filter from town (wont goto local dealer on princable and the next one is 50 odd miles away) fitted it and set off home...

By God, the car feels alive again! and gave 34.3mpg on the way back :)

By the way - the old filter was full of sand and looked like it had been wet - guess I was very very lucky at Newent  :o

After years of driving and messing with cars, I've known a air filter to make such a difference :)

When I first got my Astra the air filter was horrible, so I threw it and promised myself I'd get round to buying another. It was when I had to bury the throttle in each gear to make it move that made me have a look under the bonnet. There's a fine mesh filter just infront of the MAF. It was solid with sh1te! ::) It was amazing te difference a clean made! :y  :y

Why does that not surprise me Jon.   I would be checking for excess weight in the boot behind the spare wheel where the air vent is that hides behind the rear bumper quarter.  Might be a mini sand pit there.  ;D ;D ;D ;D

The genuine GM part does have a much larger surface area than most patterns - I posted up some pics a while back - and thus I would always recommend GM :)
