Title: Phorm starts tomorrow on BT
Post by: Martin_1962 on 29 September 2008, 14:58:02
Deep Packet Inspection on your web browsing.

I have already contacted the web site opt out for my site - I suggest someone here does the same or BT users of OOF who forgot to opt out or get opted in wil be bombarded with relevant adverts - I wonder what they will be for?

Basically, forget bypassing ways around it, it is a system whereby a 3rd party (Phorm, formally 123media) tracks which sites you visit, and serves you adverts based on your surfing habits.

The ads are deemed to be 'safe' so if you have been around the sex sites, you shouldn't get pop-ups from that (except many such sex sites are rigged with malware, so you probably will ;D).

Its not the sex sites this technology tracks - its ALL sites. So it can learn what interests you, then fire very targetted ads at you.

This happens already on most websites with ad banners - the ad cookies track you around the web. Only because it relies on a cooksie locally on you PC, its easy to disable, or better still, fool.

Phorn does the same as these tracking cookies, but at the ISP level, so much harder to find a way round.

Earlier versions of Phorn were at DNS level, so easily bypassed.  Not looked at the current technology they use now.

It would not appear to be a goal of Phorn to 'grass you up', though the ISP probably wants you off the download sites, as do RIAA/BPI etc, so there may be an incentive for Phorn to do so at some point.

BT are not the only ISP allowing the use of this technology, but due to the hysterical reporting of it, many ISPs are keeping it under wraps.

Virgin Media are looking into it but are waiting to see what happens with BT

I few ISPs are 'awaiting how it works with BT' whilst quietly running through (the fairly complex) steps of implementing.

So they are not 'waiting to see how it pans out', they are stealthily building the infrastructure, as BT did before it was found out.

it is only bt branded 'consumer' isps.

Though I won't put it past plusnet to implement - they have a reputation for some underhand tactics ;D

I'm confused.  What actually happens, pop-up ads?  I can see them watching my habits, but how do they deliver these targeted ads?

Via websites you visit.

Its no different than ad tracking cookies we all know, but its not done via cookies...

I dont give a Monkeys, All I can say is that I dont go on sites that I need to be worried about.  Lets face it, I know web sites track my movements, I know Plus Net are devious, I am aware all my emails go through a processing centre.

Is Big Brother Watching me.  Of course he is.

But the email Checker cant read this.

And if it can then it understands my point.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D :y
