Just took my car for its MOT in Nottingham (Colwick). After I left them to it the lady in their reception was just reversing my car into place and ended up reversing into a fork lift truck!! Grrr! She put a nice deep dent in the rear bumper and smashed my plate! I’ve had a rough week with my car recently and now this :(
She offered to do my MOT for free and also cover all cost for the repair. Luckily they are also an accredited VW repair shop so I should hopefully get a good repair for free.
Should I insist that I get the bumper replaced or should I settle for a bodge repair? It as buckled up the straight edges around the number plate and also popped it out of place on the left hand side.
I’m thinking I should force the issue and get them to do a proper job.

Bad news :(
Insist them to change the bumper..Cant be repaired as original..
-
Personally i would demand a new bumper :y
-
Any damaged parts should be replaced with NEW parts...I would insist that they do. :y :y :y
-
Yes, definitely a new bumper.
-
As long as the finished result was good, I think I would accept a good used bumper.
-
new parts all the way m8
-
Don't settle for second best. After all it was their fault
-
Yeah i think i will make sure they stick a new GM bumper on...
I bet they don't come cheap?
-
The rear bumper that was damaged was also second hand and of indeterminate age..... I would be happy with a second hand one, suitably refinished. If you insist on a brand spankers new one, they may well put it through their insurance (probably not though, TBH) and the cost of a new bumper may well write your car off, in effect.... ;)

Vauxhall stealers want £294 retail and £265 trade.
I would be ok with a second hand one TBH but as they are a repair shop I could insist they use a new one and paint it themselves. I doubt they are going through insurance as they are a body shop and would probably do the job on the side, hence cost would be quite low in comparison to a real insurance quote.
Thinking about it - are the facelift MV6's different from the standard ones?
-
no question, get a like for like replacement, no bodge stuff, get it done right.
It was their fault, done on their property, and done by one of their employee's
Make sure GM parts are used!
-
If it went through the insurance you would get a new bumper.
So I would want a new bumper if it was me. :-* :-* :-*

Agree only to a degree with the cries for a new bumper. But as H21 says, how much would the job be compared to the value of the car. Sometimes you've got to give some garges a bit of slack, & if that meant I had a new-to-me bumper .... and when they're painted up, are youreally going to be able to tell the difference? .... rather than a brand new bumper, I'd let them just get A N Other bumper for me and paint it all up.
-
The other consideration is that most insurance companies will have a clause in the small print saying they may use second hand parts for a repair on a vehicle that's more than a couple of years old, so can you complain if they do the same?
I guess if you're put in the position you were in before the incident (bumper in similar or better condition, not bodged) and with a free MOT you can't really grumble.
Then again, when I had a new bumper on the insurance they just ordered up a ready-painted new bumper and bolted it on. Is it going to be worth their while taking a load of time painting an old one or patching up your existing one?

Hmmm, not too sure I want a bodged bumper. Imagine if I had a slight bump in Sainsburys for example and the filler cracked and fell out? This would never happen if the bumper was replaced (new or breaker sourced)
The lady more or less jut forced me to accept a bodge repair, but I argued and asked for a new bumper. She said she'll speak to her boss about it, but if he's got any decency about him he'll do the right thing and replace.

I'd tell them you want a warranty on the repair too. Just to plant the seed that if they bodge it and it's not acceptable you'll be back.

There are differing degrees of 'bodged'. I agree that a couple of pounds of filler is likely to fall out but a proper plastic welded etc repair wont.
I would certainly suggest, as a compromise to the bodged versus new part argument, a respectable second hand item, suitably painted. that way, there may be room for manouevre as regards additional wee touch ins, seeing as they are already mixing paint? Not suggesting a complete respray for free by any manner of means, but, if you are prepared to be flexible, perhaps the garage could as well.... ;)

i have a good second hand facelift bumper with backing foam and beam ! :y

Thanks for your input chaps!
Spoke to my dad that evening and he advised I request a headed letter which documents exactly what happened and what they propose to do about it.
Since returning and having x2 Conti 3's fitted for my MOT the director of the company wrote a letter as above and offered to replace the bumper and number plate and includes a warranty for the life of the car until I sell it on :)
Happy ending in the end but could have been worse if they denied it ever occurred.
Cheers
