Title: Alternative Tyre Thread
Post by: Jimbob on 13 December 2006, 09:18:11
Both mine and the mrs are up for new rubber soon.

Now I'm not going to ask which are the best, everyone has a favourite, but...

Which tyres would you NOT buy again?

I like 'best of both world' myself, good wet and dry grip, that dont wear down too fast.

I'm on the lookout as well.

Have 4 Dunlops on at the moment (D9000?  Its p*ss*ng down, not going out to check yet) and they are fine in the dry but slippy as a slippy thing in the wet.  The two fronts are virtually done, the two rears are getting there quite quick.  Certainly looking for something else now.

Well i wouldnt buy Dunlops again....not had themon Omegas but everything else they were on ( they often come on new Rovers) seemed to lose grip in the rain.

Also dont like michelin on the omega.

Wouldn't touch Michelins with a barge pole. Pirellis seem ok just seem to be little noisier than some.

Always liked P6000's but thought they may be a little too soft for the meega?
very bad commend on P7 on WIM's forum, but think that must be a 1 off defect.

I am very pleased with my current Conti EcoContact CP tyres, very quiet and good grip, though they will need replacing very soon so basically lasted less then the Michelins that came factory-fitted with the car  :(

I might still buy Conti's again though.

I'll vote for Michelin. I had 4 fitted during the summer, no complaints at all.

No complaints with Michelins.

Bridgestone.

They gave fantasic grip, hard walls too but only lasted 8k....

Currently on Goodyear Eagle Ventures, done over 10k personally and around 8k on the previous owner  :y

MOT which was in November i have 7mm front 6mm on the back  :)

I am against Michelins.......they are much to hard (hence why they last better) and tend to glaze over making them pretty slippy.......I actualy took 2 off the car which still had 3mm on them because they were outright dangerous.

Of course this might not be a problem if you drive like a mobile road block...just prey you dont have to stop suddenly!

I have found the Contis and Uniroyals good

There's a few guys on here got Nankang's fitted, myself included. I've had no problems so far and would have again. IIRC TD has them fitted and has had some great mileage out of them, and there cheap!!!!!

I have found Michelins quite grippy and last well (came fitted to car) I don't know if I would buy them though.

I would not buy Vedrestein - not after one slid out last year and the fronts didn't (think Avon). They were not even that cheap

Just to be sure i double checked my MOT which was done in October. I acutally under estimated, i have 8mm on the front. 6mm on the back.

Its running on the same tyres i bought the car on over a year ago!! I also double checked the millage, i bought it with 84k miles its now on 97k.

Its defo done those miles on that rubber, quite sure its done more too by the previous owner.

Scanned images of my MOT to prove those are depths...

I`d agree with this  ;)

Took two dunlops and two michelins off mine when i got it in favour of the contis and its very very rare now that my "TC" Light flashes on as the rear wheels scrabble for grip ( this was frequent with the previous tyres - which had good thread)

Nankangs....heard lots good about them too

Dont laugh but i have Linglongs on my elite (yeh i'd never heard of them either)
but after 13000 miles i cant fault them grip is good tread wear seems ok (approx 4mm left
so i think its a question of you pays your money and takes your choice

Same here, I have an unheard of (to me anyway) make called Corsa on mine which were very reasonably priced and seem ok. Can't say how well they wear though because when my front shocks went, so did most of the tread. Might give them another try  :-/

By the way Goonlord, your avatar isn't visible on the forum.....just a box with red cross in. :-?

Nankangs are good for me :y - my 17" Twinspokes had 225x45's on when I bought them & I found them a bit too low on the sidewalls & a bit small O/D, so I got 245x45x17's (from mytres.co.uk) & am very pleased with them. Have 10K on this set & just changed them front to rear, as said before - as long as your geometry's right, no problems.

Seasons greetings to all  ::)

Tunnie - fair enough, cant argue with the written word....

But what was the fitter using to measure?  Calibrated mark one eyeball?   ;D

I've looked at a few tyres over the years with a real (court approved) calibrated guage.  Rarely seen over 7 or 8 mm on a standard tyre, sometimes more on winter blocky tread pattern on cars.  Different deal on lorries/large commercials though ....

ps - just checked the brand new, unused, Michelin Pilot on a steel rim that is my spare (thinks its the original!) and its 7.5 mm.  Not a calibrated guage, admittedly, but a freebie that was a giveaway from the Uniroyal man years ago when I visited the factory that was then on the outskirts of Edinburgh.    ;)

Yep i have, well not on the front anymore.....failed the MOT for worn on the insides....they did 27k  :)
Still got em on the back.....should see 30k outa them  :y

Coz the meega failed the mot for the tyres i didnt have time to order more nankangs (carnt seem to get them in Swindon  :( ) So the tyre place i use just chucked on cheapest they had......carnt remember the make now and its dark outside.....but not as good as the nankangs....more road noise......but seem to grip just as well.....mentioned it to the tyre place...and as im a pretty good customer of theirs (4 cars all being used as taxi's im in there pretty often  ;) ) He said as good well jesture he would chuck two on back (same make) when i need them for £34  :y , the two on the front cost £116
So i'll have them, then go back to nankangs when they are worn out   :y

I have been amazed with the ware of these Goodyear Eagle Ventures, I have one of those pen things to measure tread back home, will double check at chrimo break.

Also pleased to say the tyres have even ware.

I have just been searching online to find what their tread is new... i can't find them anyware!  :'(

Could they have stopped producing the Goodyear Eagle Ventures?  :'( :'(

My MV6 likes Dunlop SP9000 - good in dry or rain.
