Title: I should be dead apparently!
Post by: Taxi_Driver on 07 October 2008, 20:47:08
Had 3 visits to my docs in the last 2 weeks for blood pressure checks (im on tabs for it anyway)....usually only go every 6 months....
1st routine check....by a nurse....was crikey thats high....i'll book you another appointment in 2 days...
2nd check 2 days later....was its come down a bit....but i'll book you in with the doc....
Today...with the doc.....blimey 'you should be dead!'  ;D
She reckoned she'd never seen a reading so high  ;D

She reckons i suffer with 'white coat' syndrome.....which i partly agree with....i dont like going to the docs or hospital....

So outcome was.....doc is leaving my medication as it stands....but she carnt believe my blood pressure is that high normally.....so she's ordered a 24hr blood pressure monitoring kit....that i will have to have fitted when it arrives.....so she can see what my blood pressure is doing during my 'normal day'.....

Not looking forward to that either!  :-/ :'(

Just checked mine - it was 114 / 78.
Got a kit from boots for about £50, it's worth its weight in gold...

I also look at my blood sugar levels now and again..

Most uncomfortable bit of kit... its a standard blood presure cuff that goes off automatically at the set interval .... mine was every 30 minutes ... and records the data to a cassette pack. Pack and batteries clip to belt during the day .. and just get in the way at night wherever you put them ..  not that you'll get much sleep as every time you "drop off" the thing fires up and wakes you !!

Does sort out problems though .. after the test they told me there was nowt wrong that losing a stone wouldn't cure ( I was 17 stone at the time .. now down to 14 !! )

Take things steady until the results are known ..  :y :y :y :y

I do too. It doesn't really help when they look at the reading and say "break me! we'll try that again in a few minutes. Try to relax".

Hope it all goes well. I got a BP measuring gadget when they were concerned about mine (rather insurance company gave me the spanish inquisition then wondered why my arteries were throbbing away >:(). Readings at home were perfectly normal. Took them in to my GP and he said nothing to worry about.

Thats pretty good James.....tho i did tell the doc i had a wrist monitoring blood pressure device....she said they arent that acurate...apparently so she said u you need to measure it nearest the heart....hence why top of arm is used at the docs  :y

Mine was way over 200 for the top figure  ;D

Blimey - that's high - but its the bottom figure that's more important....

Mine is an arm cuff - not a wrist one :y

Dave, take a reading with your home kit, out of interest.

If the reading really was that astronomical, I wonder if the Docs kit was on the blink.

When I was 18, I narrowly missed a motorway pileup in my Pug, and when I stopped at the services shortly after I did my Bpressure on one of those health machines - it was 188 / something - very high for a young healthy male.

The next day it was totally normal - so if you were stressed, or rushed, or generally busy at the time, it could have been a bit of a red herring.

The one of the biggest causes of high BP is stress, and when people get told it's dangerously high they worry - which makes it go higher - it's a viscious circle

If you are in a position to - have a few days off, and do something you enjoy :y

I had a funny experience a few years ago, all of a  sudden while I was at work my heart started racing, big time! It was quite firightening I can tell you. A mate took me to the local A&E and I was took straight in to be 'looked' at. My heart was found to be doing 204 beats per minute ie nearly three times what it should be on tickover :o Needless to say there was a lot of activity by the various ranks of the medical profession injecting various potions into me to bring it down but nothing seemed to work. In the end it just went back to a normal beat, like flicking a switch! I was kept in for a few days and had no end of tests but nothing could be found. In fact they reckoned for a fat forty year old I wasn't in too bad a shape :y

I've been on Beta Blockers ever since as my blood pressure is high and does vary. It's always been high since I first saw a doctor, when I was a small child. The Doc reckons "it's just one of those things". I go for regular checkups for my blood pressure and one time it was over 200/140 :o :o :o he told me I'd be dead before long if something wasn't done about it. The next month I went and it was more or less normal (approx 130-140/70-80 for me). No change in medication, no change in lifestyle, no changes at all in fact. "Just one of those things" the Doc said. Strikes me it isn't as precise a science as they'd like to make out :D

Humpy (still alive!)

When something pretty awful was happening, they did check my blood pressure and I do remember it was ridiculously high (230/150something).  Stayed like that for a few days and as i was post op from a fairly big op it was a bit risky statistically, but nothing awful happened.  Statistics are just statistics lol.  Fortunately i was far too busy worrying about other things so didn't worry about the blood pressure he he!

Somehow I can't see u doing yoga (something I'd suggest to help relaxation) TD lol.
