Title: Healing time for broken / cracked ribs
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 08 October 2008, 21:47:47
I have knackered 3 of my ribs in a small mishap. (NO, I wasn't fighting ;D )

At least 2 fractured, one at least cracked.

Am in agony, can't use a lot of strength in my left arm, or move in certain ways.

Anyone ever had this - if so, how long did it take to clear up? I have a rather "physical" training course in 4 weeks, and I really need to be on form  :-/  ::)

I doubt you will be fully fit for a lot of physical exertion in 4 weeks.
I believe the only cure is to rest/move as little as possible.
Best  to speak to a good doctor ,if you can find one.

pain relief, and gentle exercise is what you need....not doing much will only make it hurt more when you start to....

Cracked a few ribs with various mishaps but never broken any...

For cracked ones, I recall this:

2 weeks of great tenderness, disturbed sleep, total muscle weakness. Do not provoke laughter or lift a torque wrench. .

Another two weeks of general tenderness. Hiccups no longer bring on feelings of impending doom, they just simply hurt like hell. You can lift a torque wrench, but don't pull on t...

Another two weeks of mainly being OK but twinges sharply remind you that you're not right yet. Up to 30 Nm on the torque wrench maybe.

Weeks 6-8 are getting back to full strength. The full 300 Nm at the end.

Depends on age of course.

for a fast heal do 3 things..
* sleep
* eat
* drink milk
as much you can do.. (serious)

I observed that for a few days if I sleep less and dont eat enough the cat scratches in my hands heal late..

Some years back a loading strap snapped on me whilst securing a load on my truck & i crack some ribs on the side of the truck & you have my uppermost sympathey. It bloody hurts. Took me about 4-6 weeks to feel almost back to normal, but if i moved in certain ways it reminded me for quite a while after that time. Just take it very very steady  :y :y

Heat is the answer James those bones grow a lot quicker when warm. My clavicle is on the mend now after keeping it toastie.

Keep your broken side covered up with a soft blanket to accelerate the process! Oh and lots of proper 'blue' milk!

Pray you don't get hiccups,

Training course, 4 weeks? no chance sorry.

After Motorbike accident I broke 5 bones in foot, two in wrist, coller and breast bone and three ribs, guess which hurt the most?

Long slow painful business I'm afraid :'(

There is a specialist place in Ipswich where all the bike racers go to heal fractures quickly.Dont know a lot about it but it involves spendinf a lot of time in a room with a very high content of pure oxygen iirc.
would imagine its very expensive, afaik its the only one in the country.

from experience in back to normal takes about 8-9 weeks.
The first 2 you cant do anything and it hurts lots, sneezing and hiccups, aswell as laughing are out, and rubarb or prune juice are in (then quickly out again :) ) milk and lots of sleep will help, as will a good diet, if you can, try taking some glutamine, as it could help healing times.

Week 3 and four, you feel a bit bettet till you get over confident and are reminded your not fixed yet, usually results in you in a ball of pain heap not breathing too well, feeling like you broke them all over again, so still take it easy, week 5 onwards get some light stretching routines approved by the doctor and start doing them, this will improve blood flow to the are whuich will speed healing, aswell as loosen the are up. First time i dsid mine i didnt dstretch anmd it added two weeks on to being normal again.

After that its gradually reintroducing nrmal activities, ph, and weaning your self of the bran flakes with prune juice for breakfast.

All in bout 8-9 weeks before the remuinding twinges stop.

had a similar injury back in my rugby league days.  Had to sleep in an armchair with a neck pillow for 2 weeks, took another 3 weeks to heal properly although I was playing again 3 weeks after the injury....
