Title: Mud, rocks and rain - lots of it!
Post by: Varche on 14 October 2008, 18:12:04
We had a terrific storm last night. Hours of lightning, thunder and it lashed it down with inches of rain. The rain is much needed but as ever seems to arrive only about five times a year.

Venturing out after such a storm is not recommended but needs must on this occasion. It took me 15 minutes to do the first 500 metres. Most of that was spent removing boulders, bottles, logs etc bigger than six inches off the road. Then it was build up speed and through the first mud bath. Of course the tractor is useless in mud (fat tyres and no weight on the back end)......

Got to the hamlet. The bar owner's wife rushed out and said don't go that way as the road is blocked in several places (so it must have been bad!) the other way is passable if you are careful. Now that is one thing I am. Two years ago a 20 foot section of tarmacced road got swept away completely half a mile away from us.

Plenty of huge mud baths but nothing too taxing. It reminds me of my youth when the slightest bit of snow and wind and you had problems. My dad used to drive around all winter with a huge coil of heavy chain in the boot of our Fords and the headlights pointing at the stars. Can't do that in my Omega it already has zero ground clearance!

When I came back the local JCB man had cleared it all. He is on a retainer from the council.

Now the sun is shining and it is like it never happened...... ;D ;D

Similiar storms occurred in Malta when I lived there and they were very refreshing, along with being very exciting after weeks / months of no rain but temperatures in excess of 100 degrees F.

I lived on a hill next to the Grand Harbour and it became just a huge river down to the sea!  8-) 8-):y

I was out in Malta in January '86 when they had the wettest spell of weather for fifty years to roads turned to rivers much more suited to white water rafting, than driving on!!! :o

yes  flash floods are very dangerous saw the aftermath of one in italy once, washed away about 3 bridges on the way up to mont blanc. Just shows the power of water really ,some of the boulders on the side of the bank were huge 2-3tonnes each easily, took months to clear debris up

Sorry LSG, I didn't see her as I think I was so busy road testing my car after all the work, only to find an oil leak that I am going to fix tomorrow during a complete service! :y

Yes that really bad weather is quite rare, as it was in 1964 when it happened to me with three separate electrical storms circling the island and one by one coming in for the attack; very spectacular!! 8-) 8-) 8-)

In the great storm ( or not if your name was Michael Fish) of 1989 boulders weighing 15 tons designed to assist as breakwaters in Dover were washed up by the power of the sea :o :o :o
