... to make things easier doing shocks, getting wheels off and so on, i was thinking of getting a compressor.
Saw this...
http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/hunter-25/path/diy-semi-professional-air-compressors-2
Any good?
What kind of money would i be looking at for something half decent?
-
I use 50 liter model as the mechanics recommended..
-
this one?
http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/hunter-55-air-compressor/path/diy-semi-professional-air-compressors-2
At £187 its a bit more than i would want to pay, but i guess thats about as cheap as i can go for something half decent?

yep..as an experience when you start to use even 50 liter pressurized air, it finishes quickly and engine starts again..But I think unless you will use it for painting its adequate
ps: they are very noisy in home ;D

This is a newer version of what I have http://www.hydrovane.co.uk/products.asp?model=HV01RM%20(Receiver%20Mounted)&air=0%2E12&motor=1%2E1&Pressure=10&Speed=1450§ion=detail&id=1475&Pressureunits=Bar%20g&MinPressure=&Flowunits=m3/min
They are quick and quiet compared to the piston type, they are more expensive I am afraid.
They are so quiet that I leave mine on most of the time and even on start up it cannot be heard outside of the garage.

Yes, Hydrovane are very good and quiet. The air comes out in a smooth flow, you don't need a receiver to smooth out the pulses that a piston type gives. I have a 3 ph one, which I run off a small inverter and it works very well. Here's one on FLeabay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/USED-HYDROVANE-15-COMPRESSOR-GOOD-WORKING-CONDITION_W0QQitemZ190258411117QQihZ009QQcategoryZ22662QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
which works of 240V. If yo don't mind getting an inverter here's a 3ph one

Because they are used a lot in industry, you can still get spares easily, several people sell series 5 service kits, oil etc.

Hydrovanes are good but should be maintained more, there also VERY expensive new!
When considering which one, consider the application you are targeting as this has a big effect on what you REALLY need.

Wow what a price, that is my exact compressor except mine is in mint condition compared to that one highlighted above.
Yes they do require more frequent oil changes, and you really need a oil filter thinghy for paint spraying. But they are brilliant for lubrication normal air tools.
Mike
P.S. Thank god mine was free. (not stolen I might add)

Wouldn't it be easier to just get one of those cordless electric impact guns? :-?

General car work, time saving tool, as members know i aint that strong ::)
Main things i can for see..
Pumping up tyres - Getting hacked off with petrol station ones not working.
Removing wheel nuts - make things easier
Rear shock bolts / diff bolts for springs and shock replacement.
-
For bolts that you can't undo by hand, not sure airguns are the solution - frequently shear them ;)
I do happen to have a VAT Free invite for Machine Mart (this Sun I think) ;)

If you guys are in the area . . .
Yes please! :)
Not just the ones i can't undo, but just make thing easier, like the problems we had with my dads shocks. Wheel nuts should be fine, i copper slip them up.
-
Is it just me getting the image of the wheelnut staying where it is and Tunnie spinning round holding the windy gun? ;D

I got one of these: http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/tiger/path/airmaster-2. Essentially the same spec. for a bit less money (although it has recently gone up).
Does the job for inflating tyres, blowing dust out and cleaning, etc.

how does one get a VAT free invite? :-?
i bought some stuff from MM a few years ago but they don't even send me a catalougue now? :-/

I got my 1st, after just asking for a catalogue of the website ;)

Thats more the price i was hoping to pay, still good for taking wheel nuts off / shock bolts?

As long as you don't send the used ones back this time!

If you are looking at getting an air compressor its not just the size of the tank thats important its the amount of air it produces (in cfm (cubic feet/min))
For instance most air tools work on 4-8cfm, so if the compressor only produces 4cfm it will run out of puff quickly, the tank will empty and you'll spend ages waiting for the machine to recharge.
Best bet is to choose the tools you will be using then get a compressor to match the tools, not the other way round

Not tried it, TBH. I find a nice long breaker bar is easier than faffing about getting more tools out. I imagine it would be OK for occasional use but would need to stop for breath if you've got umpteen bolts to do.
Can always attach a bigger reciever to it. ::) Assuming you don't exceed the duty cycle of the motor.

i have an 18 litre at home and its not man enough to undo wheel nuts done up to the recommended 110 nm. My mate has 36 litre and just about copes. You still have to wait for the tank to recharge fully before you hit the trigger or the air gun will just rattle away emptying the air tank quicker than the motor cam fill it up. No idea if the motor or the tank size needs to be beefed up on his? Does anyone have this issue/is able to undo 110nm nuts with a 25 litre tank as im wondering if that is enough?
My 18 litre nfg for wheel nuts, but works well with an air ratchet, drill, tire pressure gauge. So for me, im thinking to go with a rechargeable impact gun next. Cheaper than another 36 litre tank hopefully,no air line to faf with and quieter for the naighboures, got to have a lithium iron battery though.
So Tunnie, maybe some more things to consider, imho. you need something to cope with 110nm wheel nuts, how you make sure of that before buying im not sure...hth

Sounds to me like the impact wrench is not up to it. The reservoir size determines how long you can use a tool for, not how much power you will get out of it.
I much prefer to be able to feel what's happening when I'm using a wrench so I wouldn't use an impact wrench unless it's to loosen something that's siezed.

Yes, i agree. Personally dont have a problem undoing with impact wrench if i know i did them up correctly myself though. When i first got the car we had a very good feel of i splitting socket and a jarred back through a breaker bar on a nut that must have been over 200nm tight, because the impact wrench was not up to it. Yes i know, should have used an impact socket.
Anyway...
Could well be the gun, it is not the best, but different gun on my mates 36 litre? So maybe the pump motor needs more welly as said?
-
The aldi compressor is actually made by wolf tools you can buy the same model off their web site or advertised in some magazines i think it's probably the best value for money, 2.5hp motor, 25 ltr tank twin outlets about 8cfm wife bought me a wolf version for christmas its done every thing I,ve wanted it to including impact sockets, and is still portable enough unlike the 50ltr units. :y
-
I've got the Aldi special and it's coped with, wheel nuts, spring, shock, exhaust and wishbone swaps without issue as well as blowing tyres up and general dusting duties.
Good bit of kit for the price.
-
Just been out in the garage and noticed a price ticket on my Tiger 8/44. £69.98+VAT!
Machine Mart have hiked their prices a bit.

Problem I found with the Aldi/Netto/Lidl etc ones is the quality of the connectors is piss poor, and don't last. That and the fact they, like halfords, use the euroconnector, and not the more common (in this country) pcl connector.

Machine Mart will do a filter regulator Martin.
Without looking I would expect they will sell the euro fittings to go with it which screw in with a bit of ptfe tape to seal the threads.
If getting the fitting is an issue, remove one of the euro females from the compressor and replace with a pcl female. Pcl male from there to the filter reg and screw the old euro female into the outlet of the filter reg so you can use your existing hoses.
