Title: Question For Forum Members
Post by: Mr Skrunts on 20 October 2008, 09:45:06
http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1224361023/45#45

Just reading through the above thread and wondered how many of you still have train sets.

I was born in 1961 and my Mum and Dad from what I gather bought me a train set shortly after.

This was a hornby Britannia steam loco with 3 Pullman coacheds and the Royal Mail coach with working sack catchers and the Loco developed real smoke.  For sentimentall reasons I still have the Loco and the coaches/post truck, but I sold miles of track and building that I had colleced when I was 18 (Big Mistake)

Getting rid of the track when you did is probably not a bad thing as it would most likely have been steel which rusts and causes running issues.

The latest nickel silver track is much better  :y

A couple of Christmasses ago I was staying with my cousin in Norwich. It so happened that his business had an empty industrial unit so we pooled all the Scalextric sets in the family and friends and created a huge track. Straight must have been 50 metres long!

My dad made me a train set for my 4th birthday.

Born in 1960 .I was a Scalextric kid.
Red mini's with white roofs......monte carlo colours.
Train sets far too slow for me at that time......although I remember having great fun playing with my best friends "Dads" set in his loft, it was huge with mountains and tunnels, signal box etc etc.
My frinds father would blow a whistle to get the trains going.....whilst wearing his station masters cap..........is that sad?. :y :y

I had a OO/HO set that took up most of my bedroom until i thought i would downsize to N guage, that also ended up taking most of the room. Am currently building the flying scotsman in O guage. still a kid at 42.  :D

I had quite a few train sets handed to me when my father-in-law moved house, he had a complete set up in his loft.
As he had no room to set it all up again and also he had given up with it all because of his age it all got packed away and forgotten about.
When I took ownership I set a couple of them up for my son but he was not really interested in them, cars more his thing.
So they sat in my loft for years before I eventually took a couple of engines to a train collectors fair and they gave me a price of what they considered they were worth.
Anyway 3 years ago I took it upon myself to clear the loft and sell whatever was up there, train sets and all.
What a big suprise that was, they sold very quickly on ebay (wish I had more to sell) I didn't think trains were still as popular.
They were mainly Hornby and Lima.
And I think most went to older men and collectors as well.

No I don't think it is Skruntie.

That particular Hornby (as oppossed to the earlier Triang versions) model came out I think in the late 1970's, early 1980's as it has that "dusty" appearance which is different than the earlier "shiney" models of the 1960's.  They were mean't to reflect a more realistic appearance, but now they tend to have rust patches / streaks, and water / coal dust blemishes to do that! :D :y

In addition the drive was in the tender of the 1970s/80s models, as I believe they still are. ;)

That should not be automatic, as us girls can also appreciate the fantastic romance, complex engineering aspects and history of the railways!! 8-) 8-) 8-)

Many preserved steam lines now have a good number of female enthusiasts, some of whom work on  the footplate as I once did! :y :y :y :y

I used to have a brilliant Job, when I lived in Hertfordshire. Part of my duties were playing with a bunch of kids. I built a huge Scalextric set up, permanently set up and in parts was 3 story in height with some huge tunnels. The activity used to be called CBGP.....Craft Block Grand Prix. ;D ;D ;D

Also had a good size train set, permanently set up, CBRR.....Craft Block Rail Road.

We had a brilliant time playing with these, though I seem to remember me spending most of my time with a soldering iron and new sets of brushes, the children were not the most gentle at times, had to bring in rules about the number of crashes per turn etc. :y

Many years ago I used to have to go to a military base on Sardinia (place called Decimomannu) on a regular basis as the Fast Jet/Steely Eyed Killer types used to go down there for 6 weeks stints of practice bombing on the NATO range. The Italians who ran the place were pretty laid back about large Transport Aircraft, and just left us to it ....

However, the little shoppette they ran, alongside a small cafe type place, always had the worlds supply of Scalextrix  kits at very cheap prices .. around 1/3rd UK ... Thing was .. they also ran the Flight Planning setup next door... and if no-one bought a kit the flight plan always seem to get delayed ....

I must have bought and given away as pressies  a dozen or  more !!!  but as I lived in a single mans room in the Mess never actually owned one myself .. simply due to lack of space !!

Ah that's great news Martin!! 8-) 8-) 8-)

At last that is progress as the tender drive never seemed to give a satisfactory performance (well when I used to watch and help my ex husband 'play' with his layout) :D :y

The Wrenn models, with there heavy cast bodies and motor in the loco could always pull far greater loads than, for example, Hornby's Oliver Cromwell. :(

I have a Hornby train set of my dad's...I need to dig it out and sell it really, I'd rather see it go to someone who can enjoy it rather than have it sitting doing nothing.
