Title: is this normal (smoking related)
Post by: doog on 21 October 2008, 20:47:55
I stopped smoking last night
got up this morning put a patch on  and kept myself very busy all day
its now 24 hours since my last fag and i feel  like my eyes are popping out my head and i wanna thump everyone i see.
isthis normal? how long till it goes away ? cos if its going to be a while im going to buy a packet  before i get myself into trouble.

I actually feel quite calm when i am on my own
never felt like this before

Doug
ps I smoked 40 a day

The hard bit, is the first few weeks I'm afraid Doog.  :( It's bl00dy hard work stopping smoking.
I used Zyban about 6 years back, but I believe they do prescribe that any more, they use Champix instead.

6 days of hell, apparently. Then the feelings come by less and less often as time goes by.

i did the same  :o :o :o WOW it was like being on mushrooms, the dream i was having were surreal

I found that the biggest issue i had was breaking the other habits i had that came with smoking, like having a f@g after a meal, or once i had got out of the car after a journey, it was a routine i had got into that had to be broken along with the nicotine addiction.

So its not just about giving up a drug, its about changing your lifestyle habits as well, and that can be as hard.....for a while you may feel a little 'lost'

good luck :y

I didn't suffer any side effects from it, although there were many that you could suffer from. You weren't allowed to take it if you had any blood pressure problems. Others at work started on Zyban when i did, and were noticing a reduced disire to smoke after a few days, I was still on 20+ a day with No wish/desire to stop. It took a dose of will power to start me off.

I know how you feel ciggie & a pint was normal Still get the odd craving still. Easier now theres no smoking in pubs. Apperently its easier to give up heroine.

Nicotine molecules works on brain same as strong drugs (have similiar molecular structure) So no different when giving up..

ps: I learned those when I translated papers for a chemy master student..

i have not stopped all day keeping busy was my way of not thinking about it
i didnt notice it that much untill i had my dinner and like someone said  the old habit of having a smoke after tea made me think about it

then i went to tescos with a shopaholic wife and a 7 and 4 year old
thats when the eyes popping out my head feeling started.

Starting to feel a little  better now but i still feel i want to fight the world
i think i will stay home all day tommorow haha  keep myself out of trouble.
fingers crossed i can do it

i told  myself i would quit when i got my v6 omega as i would be putting the fag money in the tank.

cheers

I would knock the patches on the head. I'm into my fourth week now and I'm using the gum. When I used the patches I didn't sleep for a week and that made me more tetchy.

And you can ask anyone. I'm a really well adjusted, low-key kind of fella.

EDIT: It's 23 days now and I have £230 in my jar :y

i have wanted an omega since i past my test but always had to travel to work so i have owned diesels for the last 11 years. I promised i would buy myself my "dream car" (how sad am i)  when i stopped smoking
however i done it the other way around  and bought the car first

so its now a choice of keep the Omega and bin the fags  or sell the car and go back to having one car and keep smoking ( a diesel)
Its common sense realy eh?
just hard actually doing it

someone suggested chocolate a few post ago  i raided the chocolate box  and ive been stuffing my face  it helped alot   :D :D :D :y

I gave up over 8 years ago and have never cheated once, although I still believe I could.  I just get smug and feel I am beating the nicotine pushers!  Also, after a few days you will start to notice just how bad smokers smell and the fetid air  breathed into your face while they talk to you.  Realizing that you were like that, really helps to say no.

Good luck, of course you can do it :y  :D

Keep at it ... I stopped 16 years ago from a 40-a-day habit ... without patches/gum or anything .... and it was damned hard .... but after about 3 weeks it wasn't so bad and after 3 months it was easier and easier.

Food tasted better, clothes didn't stink. loads of other bits and bobs .. but you have to always remember ... you are an ex-smoker .. not a non-smoker ....   :y :y :y :y

My wife still smokes, but I don't usually notice it at home, although when people at work have just come back fom the various smoking shelters I do notice the horrible smell, especially as you say when they speak to you - horrible in a noisy enviroment when they need to get close. Ooer! ::)

So true. Various times though I've had a whiff of someone else's ciggy & thought  ..... ahhhh!  Just one wouldn't hurt, would it? But I know that now, even after 6 & half years, that if I did, I'd be back on 20+ a day. I'd love a cigar every now 7 then but daren't.

I'd never have seen you as a smoker.  ;)  :y  :y  :y

I picked up a supply of patches a few weeks ago, still sitting in the drawer--feel terribly guilty 'cause they were free. I roll my own and it only costs £10 a week. Got to do it soon,I just dont want to tempt fate.

I tried Gum many (many) moons ago. My kids found the Gum and gave some to their mates. Boy that WAS funny!

Keep going mate, you wont regret it. Just feel nice and smug that you've quit.

I read it last month, I though it was a bit patronising and not much more than an introduction to his clinics.

Oh yes, he also tells you NOT to lend your book out, you may need it. And he wont get to sell another ;D

I still smoke regularly, but I have stopped before for a couple of years.

Personally I'd recommend gum rather than patches, it also replaces the "habit" element by giving you somethign to do with your mouth too.

As for the eyes popping out thing, I smoke about 20-30 a day and my eyes still do that every time I have to go into Tesco; it is normal and related to your testes mate. :y

I gave up about 7 years ago after 38 years of 20 a day.  The doctor said it was killing me, and I had a permanent cough.  I took the opportunity to stop when I had to have an operation on my nose, which meant that I couldn't smoke for a couple of days anyway.  Then I used patches for a couple of weeks.

OK, I don't cough so much, but I've put on 2 stone and I've now got diabetes.

I still feel like I want a cigarette from time to time, but the thought of actually putting one in my mouth and setting it alight seems to put me off.  So I'd guess I'm cured for the for the rest of my life.  Pity I can't find any way of shedding the excess weight. :(

I found inhalators best when i first stopped.they give a good strong nicotine shot,as long as they are in a warm atmosphere.
