Title: How puzzling
Post by: Nickbat on 15 October 2008, 21:39:35
This Merc appears to have been abandoned. It has not moved for the last 6-8 weeks, has two flats on the front and is not parked outside any house. It is taxed to end-Oct 08, however. The local plod say they have no interest. It is an E220 CDI on a Y plate with leather interior.

It puzzles me as to why a car like this has been left to almost certain council crushing come the end of the month.

Very strange.  :-?

I`ve heard of a a few of these 'unwanted' cars left at Hospital carparks (often for months on end before anyone realises)...It seems that when a Doctor (whom has been working legally in the U.K) decides to leave and return to whence they came, they often just leave the car as there`s too much hassle in trying to sell them.
Evidently (so I`m told by a car-park security officer) there`s a perfectly legal way of assuming legal-title to such 'unwanted' cars via the DVLA....`takes while to sort-out the paperwork; but it happens regularly.
Now, that`s what I call 'a result'! ;)

Are you saying that I could acquire it? Not sure I want it, mind.

What would it be worth, I wonder?

Around 4k, I would hazzard a guess...

The E220CDI is very much sought after, so should keep its value well. (and the Estate is even more so...)

So even if it has serious problem i.e. very high mileage and bust engine, it will definitely be worth repairing.

The owner may have perished / left the country or whatever... ?

He'll still need to cut some keys and get into it to drive it away...

Outside my friends house three years ago a Renault Lagonda was 'abondoned' outside for about five months, with no one in the road knowing the owner, the DVLA showing no interest, and the Police taking no action as it was not stolen and had a valid tax disc.

The tax disc eventually ran out, and big yellow notices were posted on the car warning of removal by DVLA authorities within seven days as it was untaxed.  Within two days a car turned up, a man jumped out and unlocked the car, removed all the stickers, cleaned the filthy windows and just drove off!! :o :o :o :o :o :o :o

Work that one out!! ::) ::) ::) ::)

Mind you, the folding mirrors on the merc are manual, not automatic, so someone must have parked it very carefully before leaving it there...  :-?

Not "lost or stolen" according to the police.

The police would no doubt have also checked with the registered keeper as they did with the Renault in my example. 8-)

Nickbat appears to have a knack for spotting cars that nobody appears to need any more. ;) Did anything ever come of that ex-plod (3.2 manual IIRC) that was parked up your road when we did your cam belt?

In fact, wasn't it on the same street corner? Looks familar... :-/

Not far from there, Kevin - just about 300 yards away in fact. No, the ex-plod Omega estate disappeared. Mind you, it had only been there untaxed for about a week. This taxed Merc's been there at least since the beginning of the school year (first noticed it when I took my daughter to school after the summer hols).

Tried Googling about acquiring title to abandoned cars, but can't find anything yet.  :(

Well, the Laguna had worn it's cloggs well and truly out by 3 years old. I'm surprised it wasn't a pile of rust held together with those tickets.

Back to the thread of abandoned cars.

Years ago I worked in a city centre office and on site parking was limited. Despite having a barrier, one day a taxed Mini was parked in one of the spaces. It was there for ages. We contacted the police and they said it wasn't reported stolen and there was nothing they could do.

That night at the end of work it was pushed (handbrake on) out onto the double yellows road. The very next day it was towed away!

OK, well I've taken the first steps to gain an interest in this car. I've filled out a form at my local DVLA office to request details of the current registered keeper. If they agree, I should find out next week sometime. The tax expires on 31st October, so I hope that I can get going before the council come to take it away and crush it.
