was toy fighting with little lad earlier. dog was in the kitchen watching thru the baby gate. little lad starts his usual high pitch screaming and wailing. all of a sudden dog clears the baby gate and bites my arm then stands there growling like it wants to tear my throat out. bite never drew blood but i definatly felt it.

I think you'd be right in your conclusion... The dog is only doing what it thinks is correct... Defending the little one.
But... How confident are you that he was only defending and not enraged by the noise :-/ :-/ Just playing devil's advocate for a second ::) ::)
IMO, I think your decision is right and, only going by your judgement, would say that the pup is doing what you'd want it to do... Defend your family. Just keep an eye on it just in case!

i hear what you're saying mate, yes she was defending him. they're like best mates really. where ever he goes she's not far behind. she goes upstairs for story time when he goes to bed and he recently went into hospital to have his tonsils out. when he came home she wouldnt get of his bed until he got out, she hardly ate for 4 days. cant fault the dog at all
-
Debs might be the one to ask an opinion on this one ---- could be that the dog was defending the little one, but I am not sure ...... I think ..in a pack it would not defend another pack member against the pack leader ( which should be you!). Might have been the noise hurting her ears.
Edit -- just read last post -- seems the littl'un is the pack leader !!!!!

Sounds like you need to lock the dog in another room when you want to play fight... Or wear more layers :D :D :D
-
will definatley wear more layers next time ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Good point... The Doggie Queen will probably be able to put all minds at erst with a more "Professional" opinion... But I have heard of this sort of thing before and it was considered normal for the dog to defend the child.

I've come across this a few times with dogs when play fighting. I think its because they have no way of telling if it's real or not. I doubt if there's a problem with your dog, I think he's just reacting as most dogs do.

without a doubt, she was only protecting my little lad. like i said before, cant fault the dog at all. just a bit of a shock, she only 15mths old and normally daft as a brush, she scared of the cat and nextdoors rabbit.

I think that you should be concerned about this....animals can be unpredictable...In my opinion a dog that has shown overt aggression to you and been allowed to do so may well cause problems in the future....possibly to other members of your family.
Dogs that have shown aggression with children about are not suitable as family pets in my view.

there was no agression towards litle lad at all, if there was the dog would be at the vets right now.

But the dog has shown aggression to you Kris...a precedent has been set.....Just my opinion....My sisters dog bit her quite badly out of the blue once ...and then did the same to her child later on. The dog was not put down but was removed from the house.

It didn't draw blood - protecting child I'd say

According to my daughter, trainee dog psychologist, this may be what the dog thought. When dogs are play fighting between each other if one dog goes too far the other will let out a high pitched yowl/screech indicating thats enough and play is over.your dog may have heard this high pitched yowl and because it didn't stop then your dog would have thought a real fight had broken out.Your dog may have been acting as a mediator in breaking up the fight so it didn't escalate into a full fight.Be a bit wary of doing this again in front of the dog and if you do clearly back of if your little one starts screaming again.Dogs do play fight but there are rules about how far it can go before it becomes a fight for dominance and pack status.

Once before my ex and I split up.., were having a bit of an argument. It became quite threatening and I could not believe it when my normally rather timid dog suddenly went for my ex. She did not bite.., but u got the definite impression it was 0.1 second away if he did not back off.
She never ever did that again. Think she just read the situation and went 'on guard', which was rather sweet. And possibly fairly accurate. Never had a problem with her again and she never ever posed a danger to me or my son (who was 2 at the time).

if i playfight with my kids , my 11 month old pup who is as daft as a brush will get inbetween us and bark like mad and even get hold of the material on my sleeve and pull me away,(not nastily)
to me i see this as good as he is protecting his family and personally think kris that you have nothing to worry about

But what if your kid was playing with his friend/brother/sister and the same thing happens :'( :'(

Regardless of whether the dog was protecting the littl'un the main point is it had a go at you. You should be too high up the food chain for the dog to even try it therefore the dog sees you as below it in the "pack" or it would'nt have tried to discipline you.
Not necessarilly a bad dog but needs to know it's place. (no i don't mean beat it) greet family members before the dog, eat before you feed the dog. It'll learn.

Oh is that what u are doing when u ignore my text messages guy?
pffffft.., can't say anything else in case u put something special in my curry :P

Very rare a dog will defend a human unless trained to do so.It would probably be that it wanted to join in the play. How old is the dog,has it had any obedience training,is it normally a nervous dog when it meets strangers?I have been involved in training German Shepherds in the equivilant to police dogs so have got to know the ways of dogs,so can be quite sure that any dog that bites with anger will break the skin.
