Title: How to remove a sheep tick, One for Debs?
Post by: Vamps on 31 October 2008, 22:24:28
Our Daft Lab has what I think is a ‘Sheep Tick’ on her.  ::) Gave it a little tug but dog not happy, I seem to recall that these lock on.

IIRC there is a technique to getting them off, but do not remember how to do it, anyone advise please. One for Deb's me thinks. :)

Not sure how she got it, we do live in the country but dog not been anywhere near any sheep.

As far as I recall you have to grasp them close to the skin and twist anti-clockwise and upward -- like unscrewing a bolt

Yup, that`s how I do it here......sometimes however, the mouth-parts remain attached and I have to use a (sterilised) needle to pick it out of the skin.
I`ve tried many of the tick removal tools, but none are brilliant. :-/

Thanks peep's, if the mouth part gets left is this a big problem? can't see our dog letting me dig in with a needle, despite being soppy. ::)

If there`s a bit left it will work it`s way out in time....`helping by teeth if the dog`s mouth can get to the area.
Germoline cream should be applied anyway I think! ;)

BTW: Don`t squeeze the bloated/bulbous body of the tick try and pinch the head-end between the tips of the nails of your fore-fingers and quickly twist the tick counter-clockwise whilst lifting. :y

I always used to stick a blob of tooth paste on them (covering them) for 15 minutes+ to kill them first......not so easy on a dog although vaseline might well work to (when hiking you have toothpaste to hand!)

Seems to have gone of it's own accord today, I since discovered that the dog has had it since last weekend, and aparently the fall off after they get full, about a week.

My Dad tells me he uses frontline and seems to work, they spend a lot of time in the Lakes and his dog often used to get them.

Thanks for all the advice. :y :y :y
