SWMBO's best friend just had a baby. They have an infant car seat, but they also have a carry cot that is supposed to be safe to use in the car. Does anyone know the law on this, as long as it says it is safe to use in a car then it is legal? Cheers.

I would strongly recommend that your friend purchases a Britax First Class Si seat to carry babies from 0 through to children who weigh 18kg. :y :y
Children must be securely constrained in a car to be legally carried, and most carrycots I have known in the past do not satisfy this criteria. ;)

Lizzie, the one I am talking about has a harness, and they list it as being in the 0 group of car seats. That seat you mention sounds nice, but they are set for now. Thanks. :y

When we were first bringing our 20yr old lad home from hospital, the midwife/nurse wasn't happy that he wasn't sat on Mum's knee in the back but placed in a rear facing seat in the front :-? - there were no seat belts in the back of my Manta at the time.

My first, 1960, car didn't even have seat belts in the front!! :o :o :o :o and all my first company Escorts and Cortina's didn't have them in the back, but times have changed and in this case at least, thank God. Many people, especially children, have been saved by the new laws. :y :y :y

Agreed. When the front seat belt laws came in I had a Mk III Cortina with static seat belts. The world and his brother decended on local scrap yards stripping out the new inertia reel type. Nobody thought about the back seats. But I as probably you did, stood up for miles in the back, peering through the gap between the front seats, unless of course it had a bench at the front. ;) :y

I fitted rear belts to the back of a 1978 car, and it was a good job too transporting drunks around.
Pre rear seat laws and I was pulled.

My Manta S reg Manta was fitted with rear belt for my kids. Not the best of cars for rear kiddie seats because the shape of the rear seat tended to make them lean in at the top. :-?

Yep, and hanging out of the windows of a Vauxhall Victor as I remember at the age of seven!! 8-) 8-) :D :D ;)

I suggest they look at the warranty and instruction manual that 'must' have come with the carry-cot. If not go back to the supplier or manufacturer before making any assumptions. 1, its potentially their child's life and someones licence thats at risk.. :-/ :-/ :-/

Yes, those were the good old days, going to scout camp in a removal truck. I personaly have had 22 cub scouts in the back of a LWB Landrover, sitting on knees on kneew, only to go a couple of miles. :-[
As said, times change, sometimes for the better :)
Never heard of a carrycot that can be fixed into a car though, and child would still have to be restrained inside a cot :o thinks something wrong here. ::)

We had a fully legal Mammas and papas carrycot that strapped in properly, that was fine.
Bought the carrycot, and the fixing kit was an extra tenner, 5 years ago now though.
