Local garage usually cheaper but can have the car longer if not experienced enough. I think it always comes down to "its not what you know its who you know". If you on good terms with garage okay if its someone at dealership same can apply. "nods as good as a wink to a blind man" ;)

Thats correct m8, have known the bloke for a good few years now does most of my engine bits when i don't have time never has the car too long either

I'd say crack on mate sounds like a good price to me. You probably know but make sure he's quoted for cambelt kit not just a belt :y

And ensure he uses a cam lock/timing kit - this is essential, whatever he may say.

Yep will do he said for the kit as well not just the belt

I wouldn't use a main dealer again: £60 per hour for an apprentice to work on a car seems a bit excessive! Stick to the people you know, and keep going back to them.
-
Here's me being an old cynic again: I dont trust any garage, anywhere. If they'd let me, I'd stand and watch them do the whole job, from start to finish.

Are you sure he has a GM v6 locking kit? I don't mean to discredit the guy, but just double check. Virtually all garages think they can get away without one, and they have done loads before. GM v6 engines, you cannot do without the locking/timing kit.
