Our lounge telly looks like its about to go pop. Takes quite some time to fire up, pic is hazy at the edges and the sound can sometimes have a life of its own. Its a Sony (stop sniggering at the back there) but has given sterling service for quite a few years and we have been happy enough with it..
Question is, what to replace it with? More importantly, what are the current recommendations as to what specs or criteria to look for in a plasma/LCD - must haves, desirables, best nots and do nots??
-
The reliability issues aside, I cannot fault my Samsung LCD.
After the well known hassles I've had, and the fact Samsung are on my shitlist, it pains me to have to give it a recommendation, but I have yet to see better (including the over hyped Sony W).
As well as the picture, the clarity of the audio is impressive - so many LCDs have poor audio.
For piece of mind, I would go to Costco/John Lewis etc for the free 5yr warranty.
-
The answer depends on what you want from your telly...
Coronation Street at 100dB?
Home Cinema?
Use as a monitor for Xbox and main PC?
My current TV is a 720p LCD. 27". My next one will be 32 or 37". LCD for the PC. And 1080p - my current resoltion is below 768 and 1024x768 seems to be becoming standard for websites, so I miss the bit at the bottom...

We love our new Sony Bravia 40" 1080p TV :y

Moth in Law has a Samsung LCD and the pic quality is surprisingly good. Daughter has a Samsung widescreen monitor on her PC and likewise, pic quality is good. The TV would be used for viewing as well as home cinema and occasional Wii use. Santa might just get a games console on his sledge for delivery here as well...... ;D

Hold on TB, what are you saying. Your Samsung is the most unreliable television you have ever had, but you are going to recommend it :-/
Lie down in a darkened room for half an hour and the madness will pass :D ;D ;D

No, the Sony is the most unreliable I've ever had. Difference being, if my Samsung blew up tomorrow, I would replace with the same model.

Plasma very much best avoided....they offer no better picture detail and consume twice the power.

Interesting........I like the Sony units but, they are not worth the extra cash as they are not distinctly better than the rest

Well it works well with SDTV and HDTV - PS3 looks stunning. Freeview is quite watchable and the upscaler is fine.
Needs toning down from std settings our backlight was dropped from 8 to 2
Tunnie has the portable TV version :P

I've got 2 Panasonic TX37LZD70 TV's, do the job for me just fine! (1080P is lovely) had them now about 9 months, and had absolutely no issues at all!

I have a tosh DLP tv
picture quality is excellent but the down side to that is £150 every 2 years for a replacement lamp

Forgot to mention you also need to set up 1 to 1 pixel matching with 1080p/i sources - for ultimate quality
Can't remember option and is not in manual

We love our new Sony Bravia 40" 1080p TV :y
Yes we have exactly the same....vibrant colours ..sharp pictures...but not so good on movement in my opinion..plenty of pixel drag on football and athletics etc etc.
I think we paid about £630 4 months ago so good value overall. :y :y :y

Not sure martin ....all I know for sure is that it is a Sony Bravia 40" 1080....is there more than one model of this television.?
I'll look it up on the invoice /bill.

We will go into John Lewis tomorrow after hospital and see whats what, spec wise as well as price.
Will hopefully try to hold off on purchase for a few more weeks (telly failure permitting!) so we are into sales territory.... ;D

Cracking picture :)

i agree with the boy. I got a new samsung 6 series bout three months ago from costco, mainly for the warranty, had two break since then but on saturday went on a two hour mission to get tjhe third. The tv itself looks goodm, and the picture and sound are excellent, plus, pc world are throwing in a free blu ray player at the moment all for the same price as the tv was from costco (which i still have the warrsanty from)
Model number is le40a656a.

I bought a Samsung last year and like TB and others, the thing had a fault not long after purchase but after much phoning and refusing a repair they gave me a new one which has been OK since. The picture quality seems to be good as well :y
